"He Came Home Early… And Saw What His Mother Had Been Hiding" Chapter 9 — Sign Here

Maggie held the pen above the signature line.

Richard watched her from the green sofa.

For the first time in days, he looked relaxed.

That frightened her more than his anger ever had.

"Go ahead," he said.

Maggie looked down at the document.

TRANSFER AND RELEASE AGREEMENT.

She had read enough paperwork with Claire over the past week to recognize what Richard was trying to do.

This wasn't simply about putting his name on the house.

He wanted her to surrender any claim against him connected to the property.

"You've thought of everything."

Richard smiled.

"I tried to."

Maggie lifted her eyes.

"What happens to Ethan?"

"Nothing."

"You said signing this would keep him out of trouble."

"It will."

"How?"

Richard leaned back.

"His little incident with me disappears."

"You filed the complaint."

"And I can make it disappear."

"You can't control the police."

"No."

His smile widened.

"But I can control what I tell them."

Maggie lowered the pen.

Richard immediately leaned forward.

"What's wrong?"

"I'm thinking."

"You've had enough time to think."

"For four years, apparently."

His expression changed.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"Nothing."

She looked around the living room.

The hidden recording device Richard had installed was gone.

The crooked family photograph had been straightened.

Even the green sofa cushions had been rearranged.

It looked like an ordinary home again.

That was the trick, Maggie realized.

From the sidewalk, everything had always looked ordinary.

"Did you love me?"

Richard blinked.

"What?"

"Was any of it real?"

"This again?"

"Answer me."

"I wouldn't have spent four years with you if I didn't care."

"That isn't what I asked."

Richard sighed.

"Maggie."

"Did you love me?"

He stood.

She forced herself not to move.

"You're trying my patience."

There it was.

The sentence that used to end every argument.

Maggie would hear it and immediately begin calculating what she could do to calm him.

Not today.

"I asked you a question."

Richard stared at her.

"No."

The answer hurt.

She had expected it.

It still hurt.

"Not at first," he added.

Maggie's fingers tightened around the pen.

"So why did you approach me?"

Richard walked toward the window.

"You already know."

"I want to hear you say it."

"Why?"

"Because I'd like one honest conversation before I sign away my home."

He considered that.

Then he laughed softly.

"Thomas was stubborn."

Maggie's heart began pounding.

"Don't talk about my husband."

"Your husband cost my family a fortune."

"By refusing to sell his own house?"

"It wasn't just this house."

Richard turned.

"Maple Street was supposed to become something."

"What?"

"Retail. Apartments. Parking. It changed depending on who was financing it."

"And Thomas said no."

"Again and again."

"So your brother sent you?"

"Douglas didn't send me."

"Then why did you come?"

Richard walked closer.

"Because after Douglas died, I found his old files."

Maggie said nothing.

"I saw your name."

"My name?"

"Margaret Carter. Widow. Sole owner."

The words made her stomach turn.

She remembered the grocery store.

The dropped bag.

Richard kneeling beside her, picking up apples that had rolled beneath a parked car.

What had felt like chance had been research.

"You knew exactly who I was."

"Yes."

"And I knew nothing about you."

"You knew what I wanted you to know."

Maggie almost laughed.

At least that was honest.

"Was Linda part of it?"

Richard's expression hardened.

"Linda became inconvenient."

"She said you asked her for information."

"She gave me plenty."

"Because she was trying to find out what you were doing."

Richard shrugged.

"That's what she's telling you now."

Maggie looked at the papers again.

"What about Vanessa?"

For the first time, Richard's confidence slipped.

"Leave my daughter out of this."

"Where is she?"

"She's an adult."

"Where is she?"

"Not your concern."

"Did you hurt her?"

Richard slammed one hand onto the coffee table.

Maggie flinched.

He saw it.

And smiled.

That smile almost destroyed her courage.

Almost.

"Sign the paper."

She looked down.

Her blouse suddenly felt too tight around her chest.

Beneath the second button was a recording device no larger than a coin.

Claire had hated the plan.

Detective Reed had hated it more.

But Maggie had insisted.

Richard knew how to manipulate her when they were alone.

So for once, Maggie intended to use that against him.

Outside, Reed was supposed to be close enough to intervene.

Ethan was not supposed to be there.

That had been Maggie's condition.

Her son had already spent too much of his life believing love required throwing himself between people and danger.

This time, she wanted him out of it.

"What did you do with my signature?" she asked.

Richard stared at her.

"What?"

"The document filed in May."

"Sign."

"Did Vanessa prepare it?"

"Maggie."

"Did she?"

Richard grabbed the pen from her hand.

"You don't need answers. You need to understand your situation."

"Then explain it."

He crouched in front of her.

"You don't have Thomas anymore."

Maggie swallowed.

"You don't have money for a long legal fight."

He lowered his voice.

"And your son has a temper that makes everything worse."

"Leave Ethan out of this."

"He put me against a wall."

"After you grabbed me."

"Can you prove that?"

"The missing video can."

Richard smiled.

"What missing video?"

"The seven minutes."

Something flashed in his eyes.

Maggie saw it.

"You deleted them."

"No."

"You did."

"You should stop listening to your son."

"You installed the camera."

"For security."

"You recorded everything."

Richard stood.

"Sign."

"Where is the original recording?"

"Gone."

The word came too easily.

Maggie's pulse raced.

"Why?"

"Because it didn't help me."

There.

Maggie barely breathed.

Richard realized what he had said.

His eyes narrowed.

"What's under your blouse?"

Maggie stood.

"Nothing."

He reached toward her.

She stepped backward.

"Maggie."

"Don't touch me."

Richard grabbed her arm.

The pen fell to the floor.

"What's under your shirt?"

"Let go."

He reached for the button.

Maggie shoved his hand away.

"Get away from me!"

Richard caught both her wrists.

And suddenly they were back where everything had begun.

Beside the green sofa.

Maggie struggling.

Richard telling her to stop.

Only this time she knew someone was listening.

"Let me go!"

"Give me the recorder."

"No!"

The front door slammed open.

Richard turned.

Ethan stood there.

Maggie's heart dropped.

"Ethan?"

He wasn't supposed to be there.

Richard laughed.

"Of course."

Ethan's face was pale with anger.

But he didn't move.

Richard still held Maggie's wrist.

"Let her go."

"You never learn, do you?"

"Ethan, don't."

Maggie expected him to charge across the room.

He didn't.

He remained near the doorway.

His fists were clenched.

But he stayed there.

"Mom told me to trust her."

Richard sneered.

"So why are you here?"

"Because Linda called me."

Richard's grip tightened.

Maggie winced.

Ethan saw it.

Still, he didn't move.

"Take your hand off her."

"What are you going to do if I don't?"

Ethan looked directly at his mother.

Not Richard.

Maggie understood.

He was letting her decide.

"Richard."

Her voice was steadier now.

"Let me go."

He stared at her.

Then came another voice from behind Ethan.

"Mr. Hale."

Detective Reed entered.

Two uniformed officers followed him.

Richard released Maggie immediately.

Reed looked at her.

"Mrs. Carter, are you all right?"

"Yes."

Her voice shook.

"But he admitted it."

Richard stepped backward.

"Admitted what?"

"The recording."

Reed touched the radio clipped to his vest.

"We heard."

Richard's face changed.

Maggie touched the device beneath her blouse.

Richard stared at it.

"You set me up."

"No."

She looked at him.

"I asked you questions."

Reed approached Richard.

The officers moved with him.

Richard pointed toward Ethan.

"He assaulted me!"

"And that matter is still documented."

Reed's tone remained calm.

"We're dealing with what happened today."

Richard began arguing.

Maggie stopped listening.

Ethan crossed the room slowly.

"Mom?"

She nodded.

"I'm okay."

He hugged her.

This time, she didn't collapse into him.

She simply held him.

Behind them, Richard was escorted toward the front door.

He twisted around.

"Maggie!"

She looked at him.

"You think this is over?"

For years, that sentence would have terrified her.

Now it sounded small.

"No," she said.

"I think it's finally started."

Richard was taken outside.

Ethan looked at the unsigned documents.

"You didn't sign?"

Maggie smiled faintly.

"No."

"Good."

"I almost did."

His smile disappeared.

"What?"

"Not today."

She touched the table.

"Months ago."

Ethan stared at her.

"I came close so many times."

He took her hand.

"But you didn't."

Maggie looked toward the doorway where Richard had disappeared.

"No."

For once, that was enough.

Reed returned ten minutes later.

His expression was different.

"Ethan."

Ethan turned.

"What?"

"There's something we need to discuss."

Maggie immediately became tense.

"About Richard?"

"Indirectly."

Reed held a thin folder.

"When we began reviewing the old Hale Property Solutions records, we found financial material Richard had recently collected."

"What kind of material?"

"Records concerning Thomas Carter."

Ethan frowned.

"My dad?"

Reed nodded.

"Richard appears to have been preparing to use them against your family."

Maggie stepped closer.

"Use them how?"

"We don't know yet."

Reed looked at Ethan.

"But one transaction raised a question."

"The twenty thousand?"

"Partly."

Ethan felt his stomach tighten.

Reed continued.

"There's also a statement Richard gave us this morning."

"What statement?"

"He alleges that Thomas Carter's death wasn't as straightforward as your family believes."

Maggie's face went white.

"Thomas died from complications after surgery."

"That's what the medical record says."

"Then what are you saying?"

"I'm saying Richard provided information he claims contradicts part of that timeline."

Ethan stared at him.

"Do you believe him?"

"I don't know."

Reed opened the folder.

"We need to verify it."

Then he looked directly at Ethan.

"Mr. Carter, I need you to come with me."

"Why?"

"Because we need to talk about the last seventy-two hours of your father's life."
