"My Son Was Feeding a Girl Behind the Wall" Chapter 9 — The Woman Who Never Left Me
Ryan didn't remember leaving the hospital.
One second, Leo's scream was in his ear.
The next, he was behind the wheel with Michael beside him and Emily in the back seat.
"Ryan, slow down."
Michael's voice barely registered.
"My children are in that house."
"And you won't help them by crashing the car."
Ryan tightened his hands around the steering wheel.
My children.
Two weeks earlier, those words would have meant one person.
Now they meant Leo and Sophie.
He called the house again.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Emily leaned forward.
"Call the police."
"Michael already did."
"Call again."
"They're on their way."
Emily pressed both hands against her face.
"This is my fault."
Ryan looked at her through the mirror.
"No."
"If I had given Carter the records—"
"He would have found another way to control you."
"You don't know that."
"I know people like him."
Emily laughed bitterly.
"No, Ryan. You knew the man he wanted you to see."
The words stung because they were true.
Ryan had trusted Carter.
Birthday parties.
Family dinners.
Leo's childhood illnesses.
Carter had stood in Ryan's kitchen drinking bourbon while Sophie was somewhere in the world with a mother who believed Ryan had rejected them.
The gates of the temporary property were open when they arrived.
Ryan's heart dropped.
He had closed them before leaving.
A police cruiser turned into the driveway behind him.
Ryan jumped from the car.
An officer shouted.
"Mr. Whitmore, wait!"
Ryan didn't.
The front door was open.
Broken glass covered the entryway.
"Leo!"
Nothing.
"Sophie!"
Emily ran behind him.
Ryan entered the living room.
A lamp had been knocked over.
One of Leo's sneakers lay near the stairs.
Ryan picked it up.
His hands shook.
"Leo!"
A noise came from upstairs.
Ryan looked up.
Then a small voice answered.
"Dad?"
Ryan ran.
He found Leo inside the master bathroom.
The boy had locked himself in.
Ryan hit the door with his palm.
"It's me!"
The lock clicked.
Leo launched himself into his father's arms.
Ryan dropped to his knees.
"Are you hurt?"
Leo shook his head.
"Where's Sophie?"
Leo's face crumpled.
"He took her."
Emily made a sound behind them.
Ryan held Leo's shoulders.
"Who?"
"The doctor."
"Carter?"
Leo nodded.
"He came through the back door. Sophie told me to run."
Ryan's chest tightened.
"Did he hurt her?"
"I don't know."
Leo started crying.
"She pushed me into your room and told me to lock the bathroom."
Ryan pulled him close.
His daughter had protected his son.
Emily crouched beside them.
"Did Sophie say anything?"
Leo looked at her.
He had never met Emily.
For a second he simply stared.
Emily's voice softened.
"I'm Sophie's mom."
Leo's eyes widened.
Then he nodded.
"She told him she didn't know where the papers were."
Emily went pale.
"Carter asked about the files?"
"He kept saying, 'Where did your mother put them?'"

Ryan looked at Emily.
"You said Sophie knows."
"She knows a clue."
"What clue?"
Emily closed her eyes.
"I couldn't risk telling her exactly where the records were. I made it into a game."
"Emily, where are they?"
"Lake George."
Ryan stared at her.
She continued.
"Remember the cabin?"
Of course he remembered.
Ryan's father had owned a small cabin near Lake George.
Ryan and Emily spent weekends there when they were together.
The photograph inside Sophie's locket had been taken there.
"I hid the records in the cabin."
"Does Carter know that?"
"Not unless Sophie tells him."
Michael entered with a police officer.
"We need every location Carter might know about."
Ryan turned.
"Lake George."
Michael was already reaching for his phone.
Emily suddenly grabbed Ryan's arm.
"The picture."
"What?"
"Sophie's locket. The photograph was taken at the lake."
Ryan understood.
"If Carter saw it—"
"He may not need Sophie to tell him."
Police issued an alert for Carter's vehicle.
Ryan wanted to drive north immediately.
The detectives refused.
"This is now an abduction investigation. You follow our instructions."
Ryan almost argued.
Then Leo grabbed his hand.
"Dad."
Ryan looked down.
"Don't go."
That stopped him.
Ryan knelt.
"I'm not leaving you alone."
"But Sophie needs you."
The simplicity of it nearly broke him.
Emily looked away, crying.
Ryan hugged his son.
"I'll bring her home."
Leo whispered, "Promise?"
Ryan thought of Sophie behind the wall.
Promise?
I promise.
"Promise."
---
They drove north with police less than twenty minutes later.
Emily rode with Ryan.
For most of the journey, neither spoke.
The silence between them was filled with seven missing years.
Finally, Emily said, "I used to tell Sophie about you."
Ryan kept his eyes on the road.
"I know."
"Not everything."
"What did you tell her?"
"That her father loved pancakes even though he couldn't make them."
Ryan almost smiled.
"That seems to be the detail she remembers."
"I told her you hated thunderstorms."
"I don't hate thunderstorms."
"You used to unplug everything in the apartment."
"That's being responsible."
Emily smiled faintly.
For a moment, they were twenty-nine again.
Then the smile disappeared.
"I told her you would've loved her."
Ryan's hands tightened on the wheel.
"You should've come to me."
"I tried."
"I know."
"No, Ryan. I mean after that."
He looked at her.
"There were years when I almost did."
"Why didn't you?"
"Because every time I got close, something happened."
She stared through the windshield.
"A job disappeared. A landlord suddenly wanted us out. Someone would call asking about Sophie. I thought Margaret was watching us."
"But it was Carter."
"Sometimes Margaret. Sometimes Carter. Eventually I couldn't tell."
Ryan was quiet.
Emily continued.
"Then three months ago I decided I was done running."
"That's when you came to the house."
"Yes."
"And saw Claire."
Emily nodded.
"I almost left again."
"Why?"
"You had a wife. A son. A life."

Ryan looked at her.
"You thought I wouldn't want Sophie?"
"I thought you might want her."
"Then why leave?"
"Because wanting your daughter doesn't mean wanting the woman who arrives seven years late and destroys your family."
Ryan's voice hardened.
"You didn't destroy my family."
Emily looked at his wedding ring.
"I didn't have to. The truth did."
Ryan couldn't argue.
---
They reached Lake George after dark.
Police had already located Carter's SUV near the old Whitmore cabin.
Ryan recognized the property immediately.
Nothing had changed.
Same porch.
Same pine trees.
Same lake beyond the house.
Except now police vehicles surrounded the road.
A detective stopped Ryan and Emily.
"You stay here."
"My daughter is inside."
"We know."
Ryan looked toward the cabin.
One upstairs light was on.
Then he saw movement.
A small silhouette appeared at the window.
"Sophie."
Emily grabbed his hand.
"Oh, God."
The silhouette disappeared.
Minutes felt like hours.
Police made contact with Carter.
He demanded Emily bring him the original records.
Emily looked at the negotiator.
"I can do it."
"No."
Ryan turned toward her.
"Ryan—"
"No."
"He's holding Sophie because of me."
"He's holding Sophie because he's a criminal."
"If those papers get her out—"
"He won't stop because you hand him something."
Emily looked toward the cabin.
"She's my daughter."
"She's mine too."
They stared at each other.
It was the first time either had said it that way.
Not your daughter.
Not my daughter.
Ours.
Michael approached.
"They found the records."
Ryan looked at him.
"Where?"
"Exactly where Emily said. Sealed inside the old boathouse wall."
Emily nodded.
"Give Carter copies."
The negotiator looked at her.
"Copies?"
"He doesn't know which pages have the original signatures."
Michael understood immediately.
"We can make him think he has everything."
The plan moved quickly.
A folder was placed near the front porch.
Carter eventually opened the door.
Ryan saw him for the first time.
The doctor looked nothing like the calm man who had treated Leo.
His shirt was wrinkled.
His face was unshaven.
He held Sophie against his side.
Ryan's body moved instinctively.
Police stopped him.
Sophie saw him.
"Dad!"
Ryan's heart broke.
"I'm here!"
Carter pulled her back.
"Stay where you are!"
Emily stepped forward.
"Daniel."
Carter stared at her.
"You should've given me the files."
"You should've left my daughter alone."
"You don't understand what those documents are worth."
"I understand exactly what they're worth."
Emily held up the folder.
Carter's attention shifted.
That was enough.
Sophie stomped down hard on his foot.
Carter jerked.
She ran.
Police surged forward.
Ryan broke free.
"Sophie!"
She ran directly into him.
Ryan lifted her from the ground.
Emily reached them seconds later.
Sophie screamed, "Mommy!"
Emily wrapped both arms around her daughter.
Ryan held them both.
Behind them, officers forced Carter to the ground.
For Ryan, the world became very small.
Sophie.
Emily.
Breathing.
Alive.
Safe.
Sophie pulled back.
"Where's Leo?"
Ryan laughed through tears.
"Waiting for you."
"Is he okay?"
"Because of you."
Sophie looked relieved.
Then she touched Ryan's face.
"I knew you'd come."
Ryan kissed her forehead.
"I promised."
Across the yard, Carter was placed in a police vehicle.
Michael walked toward them.
"They found enough in the cabin to connect Carter to the money transfers, the blackmail payments and Sophie's abduction."
"And Margaret?"
Michael's expression hardened.
"The records implicate her too."
Emily held Sophie tighter.
Ryan looked toward the cabin.
Seven years earlier, he and Emily had stood on that same porch talking about the family they might have someday.
Neither had imagined this.
His phone rang.
Leo.
Ryan answered on video.
"Dad?"
"We got her."
Leo's entire face lit up.
"Sophie!"
Ryan turned the phone.
Sophie waved.
"I'm okay!"
Leo grinned.
Then his expression became serious.
"Did you punch the bad guy?"
Ryan almost laughed.
"No."
"That's disappointing."
Even Emily laughed.
It was the first time Ryan had heard that sound in seven years.
He looked at her.
She looked back.
For a moment, everything else faded.
Then Ryan's phone vibrated again.
A message from Claire.
Only six words.
I need to tell you everything.
Ryan stared at it.
The story wasn't over.
Not yet.
