"My Son Was Feeding a Girl Behind the Wall" Chapter 8 — The Person I Trusted Most
Ryan listened to Emily's recording three times.
Each time, he heard something new.
Fear in her breathing.
A tremor when she said Sophie's name.
Anger when she spoke about Margaret.
But when she said Daniel Carter's name, there was something else.
Terror.
The recording continued.
"Margaret started it, Ryan. But Carter learned how much she had to lose."
Ryan sat at the small table in Emily's abandoned apartment.
Michael stood across from him.
"Carter knew about the money. He knew about Sophie. He knew where I was."
Emily's recorded voice filled the room.
"For years, he made Margaret pay him to stay quiet. When I contacted him three months ago, I thought he wanted to help me."
A bitter laugh.
"I should've known better."
Ryan's jaw tightened.
"He wanted the files."
Emily explained that she had kept copies of the original accounting records.
Not digital copies.
Paper.
Documents containing signatures, wire instructions and internal approvals.
Enough to expose the entire scheme.
Margaret wanted them destroyed.
Carter wanted them for leverage.
Emily had refused both.
Then Sophie disappeared.
Ryan stopped the recording.
"So Margaret took Sophie for Carter?"
Michael shook his head.
"Maybe they were working together. Maybe one was using the other."
Ryan pressed play again.
"If anything happens to me, the records are safe. Don't look for the money first. Look at who kept getting paid after everyone thought the scandal was over."
The recording ended.
Michael immediately began reviewing Carter's financial history.
Ryan returned to the hospital.
For once, he wanted several hours in which nobody revealed another lie.
Sophie was being discharged the following morning.
Because the Whitmore estate remained an active crime scene in several areas, Ryan arranged to stay temporarily at a family property nearby.
Leo was thrilled.
"Does Sophie get her own room?"
"Yes."
"Can it be next to mine?"
"If she wants."
Sophie looked uncertain.
"Can I leave the door open?"
Ryan's smile disappeared.
"Of course."
"And the light?"
"All night if you want."
She nodded.
At dinner, Sophie sat beside Leo.
There were roasted vegetables, chicken and warm rolls on the table.
Ryan watched Sophie take a roll.
She ate half.
Then, when she thought no one was looking, she slipped the other half into the pocket of her sweater.
Ryan's chest tightened.
He didn't say anything immediately.
Later, Sophie took another roll.
Again, half disappeared into her pocket.
Ryan knelt beside her chair.
"Sophie."
She froze.
Her hand covered the pocket.
"I'm sorry."
"You don't have to apologize."
"I wasn't stealing."
"I know."
She looked frightened.
Ryan held out his hand.
"You can take as much food as you want."
Sophie stared at him.
"What if there's none tomorrow?"
Ryan had to look away for a second.
Leo stopped eating.
Ryan turned back.
"There will be."
"But what if—"
"There will always be breakfast tomorrow."
Sophie searched his face.
"And lunch?"
"Yes."
"Dinner?"
"Yes."
"What if I'm bad?"
Ryan's throat tightened.
"Food isn't something you have to earn."
She didn't move.
"You never have to hide food in this house again."
Sophie suddenly wrapped her arms around his neck.
Ryan held her tightly.
Across the table, Leo smiled.
That night, Ryan stood outside their rooms.
Leo's door was half open.
Sophie's was completely open, with the hallway light shining inside.
For the first time since the kitchen wall had been opened, Ryan felt something close to peace.
His phone rang.
Michael.
Ryan answered immediately.
"What happened?"
"I traced the payments Emily mentioned."
"And?"
"Carter received money through a medical consulting company for almost six years."
"From Margaret?"
"Some of it."
Ryan frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"Some payments came from another source."
"Who?"
"We're still tracing it."
Ryan heard voices in the background.
Then Michael said, "There's something more important."
"What?"
"We found Emily."
Ryan stopped walking.
"What did you say?"
"She's alive."
Every sound in the house seemed to disappear.
"Where?"
"Westchester Memorial."
Ryan was already moving.
"What happened?"
"She walked into the emergency department about forty minutes ago."
"Is she hurt?"
"Exhausted. Dehydrated. Minor injuries. She refused treatment until someone told her where Sophie was."
Ryan drove to the hospital faster than he should have.
Seven years.
He had imagined this moment hundreds of times after she disappeared.
At first he imagined demanding answers.
Later, he imagined telling her how badly she'd hurt him.
Eventually, he stopped imagining her coming back at all.
Now she was thirty feet away.
Ryan entered the hospital corridor.
Michael stood near the nurses' station.
He didn't speak.
He simply looked toward the other end of the hall.
Ryan followed his gaze.
A woman stood beside the window.
She was thinner than he remembered.
Her dark hair fell just past her shoulders.
There were faint bruises along one wrist.
She wore borrowed hospital clothes and held a paper cup with both hands.
Ryan stopped.
Seven years disappeared.
Emily looked up.
The cup slipped slightly between her fingers.
Neither moved.
Ryan had rehearsed a thousand things he might say if he ever saw her again.
Not one of them came.
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
"Ryan."
His name sounded exactly the same in her voice.
He took one step toward her.
Then another.
Emily didn't run into his arms.
Ryan didn't reach for her.
Too much had happened between them.
Too many years.
Too many lies.
She looked past him toward the hospital doors.
Her expression suddenly changed.
"Where is she?"
Ryan knew exactly who she meant.
"She's safe."
Emily covered her mouth.
Ryan stepped closer.
"She's with me."
A sob escaped her.
"Is she hurt?"
"She's recovering."
"Did they—"
"Emily."
Ryan waited until she looked at him.
"Sophie is safe."
Her knees seemed to weaken.
Ryan instinctively reached for her, catching her arm.
For one second, they were touching again.

Emily stared at his hand.
Then at his wedding ring.
Ryan saw the moment she noticed it.
She gently pulled away.
"I'm sorry."
"For what?"
"For coming back into your life."
Ryan stared at her.
"You think that's what I'm angry about?"
Emily looked down.
"I don't know what Claire told you."
"Claire told me enough."
Emily's face tightened at the name.
Ryan continued.
"I know about the letter."
She looked up sharply.
"What letter?"
"The one supposedly telling me you'd met someone else."
Emily stared at him.
"I never wrote that."
"I know."
Her lips parted.
Ryan reached into his coat and pulled out the real letter from the box Claire had kept.
Emily recognized it immediately.
"You got this?"
"Seven years late."
Tears filled her eyes.
"I waited for you."
Ryan's voice broke despite his effort to control it.
"I called you. I went to your apartment. I thought you chose somebody else."
"I thought you rejected us."
Ryan stared at her.
"What?"
Emily shook her head.
"Margaret showed me a message. She said it came from you."
"What message?"
"That you wanted nothing to do with me or the baby."
Ryan closed his eyes.
Two people.
Two forged goodbyes.
Two lives redirected by the same lie.
Emily began crying.
"I wanted Sophie to know you."
"She does."
Emily looked at him.
Ryan swallowed.
"She talks about you too."
A fragile smile appeared through her tears.
"She found you."
"Leo found her."
"Your son?"
"Our son."
Ryan immediately hated the words.
Not because Leo wasn't his son.
Because he saw the pain cross Emily's face.
He had built an entire family while she had been running.
"I'm sorry."
Emily shook her head.
"You didn't know."
For the first time, Ryan realized that neither of them knew what came next.
There was no way to restore seven years.
No way to pretend Claire didn't exist.
No way to erase Leo.
No way to return to the people they had been.
Emily looked toward the elevator.
"Can I see Sophie?"
Ryan nodded.
"Yes."
Before they could move, Michael approached quickly.
"Ryan."
Something in his expression stopped them.
"What?"
Michael looked at Emily.
"We have a problem."
Emily went pale.
"Is it Carter?"
"No."
Michael held up his phone.
"Carter's gone."
Ryan frowned.
"I thought the police had him."
"They released him pending further questioning because they didn't have enough to hold him on the financial case."
Emily grabbed Ryan's arm.
"He'll go after the records."
"Where are they?"
Emily hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
Ryan looked at her.
"Emily."
She whispered, "Somewhere only Sophie knows."
Ryan's phone rang.
He pulled it out.
The call came from the temporary house.
Ryan answered.
"Hello?"
Silence.
Then Leo's frightened voice.
"Dad?"
Ryan's blood went cold.
"Leo?"
"Dad, there's a man outside."
Ryan was already running.
"Lock the door."
"I did."
"Take Sophie and go to my bedroom. Now."
There was a sound on the other end.
Glass breaking.
Leo screamed.
The call went dead.
