"My Son Was Feeding a Girl Behind the Wall" Chapter 2 — Her Name Is Sophie
For several seconds, Ryan couldn't understand what Claire had said.
The words were perfectly clear.
Their meaning wasn't.
"The reason I'd leave you?"
Claire wiped her face.
"Please get her out first."
Ryan stared at her.
"You think I need you to tell me that?"
He turned back to the opening.
The vent was too small.
Ryan grabbed a heavy iron fireplace tool from the adjoining family room and struck the thin panel surrounding the old maintenance opening.
Claire flinched at every blow.
Ryan didn't stop.
Wood cracked.
Drywall collapsed.
Dust filled the kitchen.
Behind the decorative wall was an old service access panel that had been covered during renovation.
Ryan tore it open.
The space beyond was barely large enough for an adult to crawl through.
Sophie recoiled into the corner.
"No, no."
Ryan immediately lowered the tool.
"It's okay."
She shook her head.
"Don't close it."
"I won't."
"Promise?"
"I promise."
He crouched.
"Can I pick you up?"
Sophie stared at him for several seconds.
Then she nodded.
Ryan crawled into the opening.
When he lifted her, he was shocked by how little she weighed.
Her arms immediately wrapped around his neck.
"Dad."
Ryan swallowed.
"I'm Ryan."
She buried her face against his shoulder.
"I know."
He carried her into the kitchen.
Claire stepped forward.
Sophie screamed.
"No!"
She clung to Ryan.
"Don't let her take me!"
Ryan's expression changed instantly.
"Stay away from her, Claire."
"I wasn't going to—"
"Stay away."
Ryan called 911.
Within minutes, the quiet estate filled with flashing lights.
Paramedics examined Sophie on the kitchen floor before taking her to Westchester Memorial Hospital.
Police separated Ryan and Claire.
Detectives photographed the hidden room.
Ryan stood in the driveway watching an officer lead his wife toward a patrol car for questioning.
"Ryan!"
Claire twisted around.
"Please don't let them scare Leo."
Ryan didn't answer.
For the first time since their wedding day, he looked at Claire and felt as though he were looking at a stranger.
At the hospital, Sophie was treated for dehydration and malnutrition.
A physician told Ryan she appeared physically stable but would need observation.
Ryan stood outside her room, staring through the glass.
Michael Reed arrived shortly after midnight.
Ryan's attorney had also been his closest friend since college.
"What happened?"
Ryan looked at him.
"There's a little girl in there who was locked inside my house."
Michael's expression hardened.
"And she says I'm her father."
That stopped him.
"What?"
Ryan rubbed both hands over his face.
"I don't know."
"Does Claire?"
"Claire knows something."
Michael glanced through the window.
"Who is the girl?"
"Sophie."
"Last name?"
Ryan shook his head.
"We don't know yet."
A nurse stepped into the hallway.
"Mr. Whitmore?"
Ryan immediately stood.
"She's awake."
Sophie was sitting upright when he entered.
Someone had cleaned her face.
She looked even younger now.
Ryan pulled a chair beside the bed.

"Hi."
"Hi."
"Do you know your last name?"
She nodded.
"Bennett."
Ryan didn't move.
The hospital room seemed to tilt.
"What did you say?"
"Sophie Bennett."
Bennett.
A name Ryan had spent seven years forcing himself not to think about.
Emily Bennett.
The woman he had planned to marry before she vanished from his life.
Michael saw his face.
"Ryan?"
Ryan barely heard him.
"Emily."
"What about Emily?"
"That was her last name."
Michael stared at Sophie.
Ryan felt sick.
Seven years earlier, Emily had ended their relationship with a letter.
No explanation that made sense.
No goodbye in person.
Just a message telling him she had met someone else and wanted a different life.
Ryan had spent months trying to contact her.
Then Claire had been there.
Patient.
Kind.
Steady.
Eventually, Ryan stopped waiting for Emily.
He married Claire.
Now a six-year-old girl named Bennett was lying in front of him calling him Dad.
A nurse entered holding a plastic belongings bag.
"We found this sewn into the inside pocket of her sweatshirt."
She handed Ryan a small silver locket.
Sophie immediately reached for it.
"Mommy's."
Ryan opened it.
His heart stopped.
Inside was a photograph.
He was twenty-nine years old in it.
Emily stood beside him on a dock in Lake George, her dark hair blowing across her face.
Ryan remembered the exact weekend.
He remembered who had taken the photograph.
He remembered kissing Emily seconds afterward.
His hands began to tremble.
"Where did you get this?"
"Mommy gave it to me."
"Where is your mother?"
Sophie looked down.
"I don't know."
Ryan turned the locket over.
There was a thin paper insert beneath the photograph.
He carefully pulled it free.
Three lines had been written on the back in blue ink.
Ryan recognized the handwriting immediately.
Emily's.
He read the words once.
Then again.
Michael leaned closer.
Ryan couldn't speak.
The message said:
"For our daughter.
So she'll always know her father.
Love, Mom."
Ryan slowly sat down.
Sophie watched him.
"Are you really my dad?"
Ryan looked at the little girl.
For the first time that night, he had no answer.
