"He Needed a Fake Wife—His Son Chose the Maid" Chapter 7 — The Man Inside the Gate
Marcus spent the next morning in the estate interrogation room by choice.
Ava hated that the mansion had an interrogation room.
“It was a wine cellar,” Dominic said.
“Wine does not require wrist restraints.”
“Previous owner.”
“You built this house.”
He had the grace to look away.
Marcus proved he had been at a state police retirement dinner when his credential entered Dominic’s office. Video, toll records, and forty witnesses cleared him.
The employee number on the access card had been retired eighteen months earlier after a database migration.
“Someone copied old personnel files,” Marcus said. “Sebastian supervised the migration.”
Dominic released him and returned his weapon.
“I should have trusted you,” Dominic said.
“You investigated evidence,” Marcus replied. “That is different from betrayal.”
Ava noticed Dominic absorb the distinction.
Noah returned home with a blue wrist brace and a list of restrictions he immediately treated as suggestions. Ava confiscated three screwdrivers, fishing line, and a miniature drone before breakfast.
“You search rooms now?” he demanded.
“Only rooms occupied by criminal masterminds under four feet eight.”
“I’m four feet nine.”
“Congratulations. Still grounded.”
Dominic entered carrying pancakes shaped like dinosaurs.
Both stared at him.
“The chef is off,” he said.
One dinosaur had three legs and another resembled New Jersey.
Noah took a picture. “Evidence.”
They ate every one.
The warmth lasted until Grace discovered an old envelope sewn into the lining of Claire’s winter coat. She had packed the coat after the funeral and forgotten it in a cedar wardrobe.
The envelope was addressed to Dominic.
He opened it at the kitchen table with Ava and Noah beside him.
Claire wrote that Sebastian controlled payments from Children’s Harbor and had threatened to expose Dominic’s criminal operations if she went to the FBI. She had arranged to meet Sofia with proof.
The final paragraph changed everything.
**Your father did not die from a heart attack. I found the same cardiologist’s payment in Sebastian’s ledger. He has been clearing the path to the company for twenty years.**
Dominic stood so abruptly his chair fell.
“Dad?” Noah asked.
“Stay with Ava.”
“No.” Ava blocked the door. “You promised not to choose revenge.”
“He murdered my father.”
“And he wants you angry enough to make a mistake.”
“Move.”
Noah stepped between them.
He was small, pale, and still wearing the blue brace.
“If you go kill him, Grandma wins.”
Dominic closed his eyes.
His son continued. “And Ava leaves when the contract ends. And I’m alone again.”
The anger drained out of Dominic, leaving grief.
He knelt in front of Noah.
“You are not responsible for keeping me good.”
“Somebody has to.”
“No. That is my job.”
He called Rachel and authorized her to give the letter to the organized-crime task force under an evidence agreement. Then he handed Marcus control of Hudson Syndicate operations while legitimate and illegal accounts were separated.
“You’re dismantling it?” Marcus asked.

“I’m making sure my son does not inherit a war disguised as a business.”
Later, Ava found Dominic in the garage sitting inside his father’s restored 1967 Mustang.
“He taught me to drive in this car,” he said. “Sebastian sat in the passenger seat and told him I would wreck it.”
“Did you?”
“Immediately.”
She sat beside him.
“My sister taught me to drive. She screamed before I touched the gas.”
He smiled faintly.
“Claire’s letter proves Sofia was helping her. Your sister died because of my family.”
“Sebastian killed her. You don’t get to claim his guilt because guilt feels easier than grief.”
He turned toward her. “What happens when six months end?”
“We survive the next six weeks first.”
“That was not an answer.”
“You’re learning.”
Before he could kiss her, Grace called from the house.
The task-force analyst had decoded a number written beneath Claire’s stamp.
It was a storage locker in Yonkers.
Inside, they found original bank ledgers, medication records, and a photograph of Sebastian meeting the doctor who signed Dominic’s father’s death certificate.
They also found a current photograph of Ava leaving Sofia’s old apartment.
On the back, written in fresh ink, were the words:
**THE WIFE IS NEXT.**
The photograph forced them to reconstruct Ava’s trip. The camera angle came from across the street, above a laundromat. Marcus obtained public footage showing a gray sedan registered to a Vale Maritime subsidiary.
The subsidiary’s manager, Peter Lang, had died six months earlier, yet his building-access badge had been used twice that week.
“Ghost employees, retired credentials, dead managers,” Ava said. “Sebastian built a second company inside yours.”
Dominic spread the evidence across the dining table. For years he had measured control by obedience. Now every obedient system concealed another door.
Noah entered wearing pajamas and carrying Claire’s photograph.
“Mom wrote numbers on the back.”
They had assumed the faint marks were dates. Rachel recognized them as federal nonprofit tax-form line references. Each number corresponded to a category Sebastian had inflated—transportation, medical supplies, temporary housing.
Claire had created an index to the stolen money without keeping incriminating records in the house.
Noah beamed. “Mom made a treasure map for accountants.”
“Your mother had a cruel sense of humor,” Dominic said.
They used the index to identify three more shell companies and a Connecticut physician receiving monthly consulting payments.
Before bed, Dominic removed the pistol from his nightstand and locked it in the safe.
Noah noticed. “Because of therapy?”
“Because you should not have to wonder whether my anger is loaded.”
The boy climbed into Dominic’s bed with the solemnity of signing a treaty. Ava turned to leave.
Noah lifted the blanket on the other side.
“This is not happening every night,” she warned.
“Obviously. Dad snores.”
“I do not.”
“Marcus has audio.”
Ava lay down fully clothed. In the darkness, Noah placed one hand on each of them.
Dominic found Ava’s fingers above his son’s head.
The threat remained on the table downstairs. But for that night, Sebastian had failed to separate them.
The next morning, Marcus brought Dominic a resignation letter.
“The breach happened under my command.”
Dominic tore it without reading the second paragraph. “Accountability is repairing the system, not abandoning it.”
Ava raised an eyebrow. “That sounded suspiciously healthy.”
“Do not spread it around.”
Marcus rebuilt access control with two independent approvals, removed family exemptions, and gave Grace equal authority over residential entries. Dominic initially objected to a house manager sharing security power. Noah reminded him that Grace had caught more lies in twenty years than the armed men had caught intruders.
Grace accepted the new tablet. “Finally, a promotion with weapons.”
The mansion would no longer trust a surname more than evidence.
Rachel used the new report to identify seven entries approved under Sebastian’s family exemption. Two matched nights Claire’s medication disappeared. Another matched Sofia’s final visit. The security change did not merely close a door; it turned old negligence into a timeline prosecutors could use.
Dominic preserved copies outside Vale servers. Marcus sent them to the task force and child advocate. Their private war finally had witnesses.
Grace also discovered that one access entry had been manually relabeled as a plumbing inspection. The contractor named in the log had never worked at the estate. His address belonged to the Children’s Harbor warehouse, linking the household breach directly to Sebastian’s charity network.
