"He Needed a Fake Wife—His Son Chose the Maid" Chapter 4 — The Wedding with No Kiss
Ava showed Dominic the message before fear could persuade her to hide it.
Marcus traced the number to an internet-based account created that morning.
“Someone accessed Sofia’s old contact records,” he said. “They know who she was to Ava.”
Dominic canceled the courthouse ceremony.
Ava uncanceled it.
“That message was designed to make us separate,” she said. “I don’t take instructions from anonymous cowards.”
“This is not courage. It is unnecessary exposure.”
“You hired me because the evaluator arrives next week.”
“I asked you because Noah trusts you.”
“Then trust me enough to let me decide.”
They married at the Westchester County Clerk’s office at 10:15 on a rainy Thursday.
Ava wore a cream knee-length dress Grace found in the back of her closet. Dominic wore charcoal. Noah wore black sneakers with his suit and carried the rings in an evidence bag “so nobody could tamper with them.”
Rachel Kim served as witness. Marcus stood by the door, scanning everyone who entered.
The clerk asked Dominic to repeat the vow.
“I take you, Ava Morales—”
“Vale,” Noah whispered loudly. “That’s the point.”
The clerk tried not to laugh.
Dominic looked at his son. “May I finish?”
“You’re usually big on efficiency.”
Ava covered a smile.
When the clerk pronounced them married, Dominic leaned toward her.
She put two fingers against his chest.
“No kiss. Contract rule.”
“There is no rule against a ceremonial kiss.”
“There is now.”
Noah applauded.
Outside, reporters waited behind metal barriers. Someone had leaked the wedding.
“Mrs. Vale, were you employed as a maid?”
“Mr. Vale, is this marriage connected to the custody petition?”
“Did you pay her?”
Dominic placed himself between Ava and the cameras.
She stepped back beside him instead.
“I can walk,” she murmured.
“I know.”
“Then don’t hide me.”
He offered his hand rather than taking her arm.
She accepted.
The photograph of them descending the courthouse steps ran across New York media before lunch: the crime-linked billionaire, the former maid, and the boy between them holding both their hands.
At the mansion that evening, Noah replaced the formal wedding dinner with pizza.
He had also placed a plastic skeleton in Ava’s bed.
“Traditional Vale welcome gift,” he explained.
“Does your father know?”
“He’ll deny everything.”
Ava set the skeleton in a chair and put one of Dominic’s ties around its neck.
Noah laughed so hard he fell onto the rug.
Dominic appeared in the doorway.
“That tie cost four hundred dollars.”
“Then the skeleton is overdressed,” Ava said.
His phone vibrated.
The warmth left his face.
Marcus reported a disabled camera near Claire’s room.
They ran.
The door stood open. Drawers had been emptied across the carpet. Claire’s books lay torn from their shelves.
Noah pushed past them.
“My player.”
He crawled beneath the bed and pulled out the nursery speaker.
“This?” Ava asked.
“No. Mom had a little silver recorder. I hid it inside this.”

He pried open the battery compartment. Empty.
Dominic ordered the estate locked down.
Marcus found muddy footprints leading to a service passage built into the paneled wall. The intruder knew the mansion’s original layout.
On Claire’s desk, Ava noticed fresh scratches around a brass sailboat ornament.
She inserted Sofia’s key.
A hidden drawer opened.
Inside lay a memory card.
Noah grabbed the laptop before anyone could stop him. “Mom said if Dad ever told me she had no secrets, he was lying.”
Dominic flinched.
The card contained one audio file dated four days before Claire’s crash.
Her voice filled the damaged room.
“Noah, if you hear this, I need you to know your father loves you. He is terrible at saying it, but he does.”
Noah looked at Dominic.
The recording continued.
“Dominic, someone inside Vale Maritime is moving money through the Children’s Harbor Fund. I trusted the wrong person. If I die, it was not an accident.”
Static swallowed several seconds.
Then Claire whispered one final sentence.
“It was someone with the Vale name.”
The recording ended, but Noah immediately searched the memory card properties.
“There were more files,” he said. “Look at the numbering. This is file four.”
Marcus examined the hidden drawer. Its velvet lining carried a rectangular indentation from the missing silver recorder and faint red fibers.
“Who has access to this wing?” Ava asked.
“Family, Grace, Marcus, and senior housekeeping,” Dominic said.
“And anyone using the service passage.”
They followed the passage to a locked linen room. Inside, red wool fibers clung to a protruding nail. Grace checked the household inventory and found they matched blankets used in the old boathouse.
Noah opened a dusty cabinet and discovered clove-gum wrappers beneath a stack of sheets.
Dominic placed one in an evidence bag.
“Sebastian chews cloves when he is trying not to smoke,” he said.
“That is suspicion, not proof,” Ava replied.
“You defend him?”
“I defend the difference.”
Noah found a maintenance map taped beneath a shelf. Someone had marked the nursery, Claire’s room, Dominic’s office, and the boathouse in blue ink.
The map had been printed three days earlier from the estate management system.
Grace changed every staff credential while Marcus installed independent cameras. Dominic wanted Noah moved to a hotel. Noah refused to leave his mother’s room until the recorder was found.
Ava proposed a compromise: they would all sleep in the secured family wing.
“All?” Dominic asked.
“Separate rooms,” she reminded him.
Noah dragged the plastic skeleton into the hallway between their doors.
“Security,” he explained.
At two in the morning, Ava woke to a soft scraping sound. Dominic was already outside, unarmed but alert. Together they found Noah asleep beside Claire’s door with the photograph under his cheek.
Dominic lifted him carefully.
“He used to sleep on my chest,” he whispered. “Then Claire died, and he stopped letting me touch him.”
“He let you catch him tonight.”
Dominic carried his son back to bed.
On the desk, Noah had written a new question beneath Claire’s final words:
**Which Vale?**
At breakfast, Dominic gave Noah a list of every living Vale relative and allowed him to cross out people who could not have entered the estate. It was the first time he treated his son as a witness rather than a problem.
Noah left Sebastian’s name untouched.
“He gave me the chemistry kit,” he said. “He knew Celeste hated messes.”
Ava recorded the statement with Rachel present. Dominic did not prompt him.
When the interview ended, Noah asked whether their wedding could include no guests, no champagne, and no speeches.
“That sounds less like a wedding than a hostage exchange,” Dominic said.
“Perfect for this family,” Ava replied.
Noah wrote the courthouse date on the maintenance map, directly over the route to the boathouse.
That afternoon, Ava and Grace inventoried Claire’s room. One silver recorder was missing, along with a red travel blanket and an old staff directory. Grace remembered Sebastian requesting the directory after Claire’s funeral, supposedly to send gifts. Dominic authorized a forensic review of family access logs. By signing an order against his own uncle, he chose uncertainty over inherited loyalty.
Noah watched him sign and quietly returned Sebastian’s chemistry kit. Suspicion now belonged to evidence instead of fear.
That distinction changed the entire house.
