"He Needed a Fake Wife—His Son Chose the Maid" Chapter 3 — The Rules of This House
Noah began his campaign against the marriage at 6:12 the next morning.
Ava opened her bedroom door and stepped into six inches of plastic balls.
Red, blue, and yellow spheres flooded the hallway.
She caught the doorframe before falling.
Noah watched from the stairs with a bowl of cereal.
“The floor is lava,” he announced.
“The floor is a lawsuit.”
“You can still quit.”
Ava picked up a red ball. “You filled an entire hallway before sunrise. That shows planning, persistence, and terrible respect for sleep.”
She threw it.
It landed perfectly in his cereal.
Milk splashed his tuxedo-print pajamas.
Noah stared at her, then grinned.
Dominic appeared behind him in a dark suit, already dressed for Manhattan.
“Why are there two thousand plastic balls in my house?”
“Three thousand,” Noah said.
“Your son is practicing volume estimation.”
Dominic looked at Ava. “You encourage him.”
“I redirected him. There’s a difference.”
At breakfast, she placed a printed schedule beside Dominic’s coffee.
“Noah has a school conference at eleven.”
“Marcus will take you.”
“The principal requested a parent.”
“I have a board meeting.”
Noah pushed eggs around his plate without eating.
Ava folded the schedule. “Then I’ll tell the evaluator your board meeting mattered more.”
Dominic slowly set down his cup.
“Is blackmail one of your professional skills?”
“Former school counselor. We call it natural consequences.”
He attended.
St. Matthew’s Academy occupied forty acres in Rye, with stone buildings, manicured fields, and tuition large enough to purchase a small car every year.
Principal Whitaker slid a disciplinary report across his desk.
“Noah struck another student.”
Dominic read the first page. “Suspended for five days.”
“Pending review.”
Noah sat rigidly beside Ava.
“What did the other student do?” she asked.
Whitaker adjusted his glasses. “Physical violence is never justified.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Dominic looked at his son. “Answer her.”
Noah’s mouth tightened.
A girl waiting outside the office appeared through the glass wall. Her lower lip was split.
Noah glanced at her.
Ava understood.
She opened the report again. “The incident started near the service stairwell. Where is the camera footage?”
Whitaker hesitated. “The camera malfunctioned.”
“Convenient,” Dominic said.
Ava asked the girl to enter with her mother’s permission. Her name was Lily Chen. She admitted that three older boys had cornered her and mocked her speech impediment. One shoved her. Noah intervened.
“He told them to stop,” Lily said. “They laughed about his dead mom. Then he hit Tyler.”
Dominic’s anger filled the room without movement.
Noah watched the floor.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Dominic asked.
“You only ask what I did. Never why.”
The words landed harder than the smoke bomb.
Dominic turned to the principal. “The suspension is withdrawn. All four students receive a fair investigation, and your missing footage is preserved for our attorney.”
“Mr. Vale, you cannot dictate—”
“Correct,” Ava interrupted. “He can’t. But he can request records through proper school procedures, and you can stop pretending this is simple.”

Dominic glanced at her. He was unused to being corrected and even less used to appreciating it.
Outside, Noah walked ten feet ahead.
Dominic caught up. “Protecting Lily was right. Hitting Tyler was not.”
“He deserved it.”
“Often true. Still not permission.”
Noah looked sideways at him. “Have you ever hit someone who deserved it?”
Ava waited.
Dominic said, “Yes.”
“Did you apologize?”
“Not to him. I should apologize to you for teaching by example and pretending I didn’t.”
Noah stopped walking.
It was not forgiveness. But it was the first crack in the wall.
That afternoon, Ava took the photograph to Sofia’s former hospice supervisor. The woman confirmed Sofia had feared someone was altering Claire’s medication records.
“She said Claire wasn’t dying from the crash alone,” the supervisor whispered. “She thought someone kept making her worse.”
When Ava returned to the estate, Dominic waited in the kitchen.
“You left without security.”
“I dismissed the driver outside a medical office, as permitted.”
“Someone searched Claire’s room.”
“Which means your security has a hole. It doesn’t mean I surrender my freedom.”
He stepped closer. “You could have been followed.”
“Concern sounds different from an order, Dominic.”
His gaze held hers.
“I was concerned.”
The honesty made the kitchen feel smaller.
Noah entered carrying three plates.
“Shared dinner,” he said with theatrical misery. “Contract rule.”
They ate grilled cheese because Noah refused the chef’s salmon and Ava refused to let Dominic order a second meal nobody wanted.
Halfway through dinner, Dominic’s phone rang.
Noah reached across the table and turned it facedown.
Dominic raised an eyebrow.
“Contract rule,” Noah said again.
This time Dominic smiled.
It transformed him.
Ava understood why dangerous men inspired loyalty. She also understood why Claire might once have loved him.
Her phone buzzed.
The screen displayed Sofia’s old number—a line disconnected eleven months ago.
Before Ava opened the message, Noah reached across the table for another sandwich triangle.
“Therapist interviews tomorrow,” she said.
“I reject all three.”
“You haven’t met them.”
“Efficient.”
Dominic put his phone in a kitchen drawer. “You will choose after speaking to them.”
Noah stared. “You’re coming?”
“The contract requires it.”
Ava shook her head. “Try again.”
Dominic exhaled. “I am coming because I should know what you are afraid to tell me.”
Noah studied him, suspicious of progress.
“You can’t bring Marcus.”
“Agreed.”
“Or a gun.”
“The therapist may object to searching me.”
“Dad.”
“Agreed.”
The next morning, Noah chose Dr. Lena Patel because she did not speak to him in a baby voice and because her office had an elderly bulldog named Franklin. Dominic lasted twelve minutes before trying to turn the session into a risk assessment.
Dr. Patel handed him a feelings chart.
Noah laughed until he cried.
On the drive home, Dominic admitted he was afraid every time Noah left the estate. Noah admitted that he caused trouble at school because suspension meant staying near his father.
Neither looked at the other.
Ava watched them in the rearview mirror and understood that love had survived inside the house. It had simply lost its language.
That evening, she finally opened the message.
Sofia’s old number was not stored under her name. Ava had kept it as **Home**, unable to delete the last place her sister might answer. The word on the screen reopened eleven months of unanswered calls.
Dominic noticed her hand shake. He did not take the phone or ask to see it. He waited.
That restraint mattered more than comfort would have.
“Whatever it says,” he told her, “you decide who reads it.”
Ava showed him because trust had to begin before it felt safe.
Marcus traced the message through three public networks. The final relay came from a Yonkers library computer used by a man wearing a Vale Maritime maintenance jacket. Footage showed him leaving with a red wool blanket. The clue connected the warning to the estate linen room and proved the sender had access to both Sofia’s records and company uniforms. Ava insisted they follow the trail instead of frightening its owner into silence.
Dominic agreed, though patience looked physically painful on him.
For Noah, he practiced it anyway.
The message contained five words.
**Do not let him marry you.**
