"He Needed a Fake Wife—His Son Chose the Maid" Chapter 2 — Six Months as Mrs. Vale
Ava stared at Dominic until the last thread of silver smoke disappeared between them.
“No.”
He seemed genuinely surprised.
“You haven’t heard the terms.”
“A powerful man offering money to an employee after a public disaster rarely improves with details.”
“Six months. Separate rooms. Full salary plus five hundred thousand dollars when the guardianship petition is dismissed.”
“Still no.”
“One million.”
“Do you negotiate bedtime this way?”
His jaw tightened. “Noah’s grandmother has spent two years collecting evidence that I am unfit. Tonight gave her the centerpiece.”
“A wife won’t make you a father.”
“No. But a stable household may keep my son from being removed while I learn how to be one.”
That answer stopped her.
He did not sound humble. Dominic Vale probably considered humility a contagious disease. But he sounded honest.
“Why me?”
“He trusted you with Claire’s box.”
“He threw it at me.”
“For Noah, that is a declaration of loyalty.”
Grace appeared at Ava’s shoulder. “Mr. Vale, the guests are leaving through the east doors. The fire department would like an explanation for the unauthorized smoke devices.”
“Tell them my son has an interest in theater.”
Grace looked at the glitter-covered ballroom. “Experimental theater?”
Ava almost smiled.
Dominic noticed.
“Come to my office in twenty minutes,” he said. “Bring your conditions.”
“I said no.”
“You also haven’t given the box back.”
Ava looked down.
She still held it.
Twenty minutes later, she entered his study carrying the box, her sister’s key, and a yellow legal pad.
Dominic sat behind a walnut desk. Marcus stood near the windows. A family-law attorney appeared on a secure video screen.
“Ms. Morales,” the attorney said, “I’m Rachel Kim. I represent Mr. Vale in the guardianship matter, not you. You would need independent counsel.”
Ava liked her immediately.
“Good. First condition: Mr. Vale pays for the lawyer I choose.”
Dominic leaned back. “Accepted.”
“Second: no physical relationship is required or implied.”
“Accepted.”
“Third: I keep my own bank account, phone, identification, and freedom of movement.”
His eyes narrowed. “With security.”
“Security I can dismiss when I’m going to the grocery store.”
“No.”
“Then find another wife.”
Marcus coughed into his fist.
Dominic stared at her. “One driver outside public locations. No one follows you inside unless there is a verified threat.”
“Agreed. Fourth: Noah gets a licensed therapist he chooses from three qualified candidates.”
“He will refuse.”
“Then you attend the first three sessions with him.”
“This contract concerns marriage.”
“This contract concerns your son. That is what you told me.”
Rachel hid a smile on the screen.
Dominic accepted.
Ava added household rules, school attendance, one shared dinner each night, and a prohibition against interrogating Noah with armed men present.
“My security team does not interrogate him.”
“They stand behind you looking like a firing squad.”
Marcus said, “She has a point.”
Dominic gave him a look.
“Last condition,” Ava said. “You tell me what happened to Claire.”

The room changed.
“My wife died in a car accident.”
“My sister cared for her.”
He went still.
Ava placed the brass key beside the metal box.
“Sofia Morales. Private-duty nurse. She gave me this before she died.”
Dominic picked up the key without touching her hand.
“Sofia disappeared three days after Claire’s funeral.”
“She was killed by a hit-and-run driver in the Bronx.”
“I was told she left the state.”
“By whom?”
He looked toward the closed office door.
“My uncle.”
They found Noah in Claire’s sealed bedroom, sitting beneath a white canopy bed with a screwdriver and a flashlight.
“Breaking and entering?” Ava asked.
“I live here.”
“Breaking, then.”
Noah pointed the screwdriver at Dominic. “She isn’t moving into Mom’s room.”
“Nobody said I was,” Ava replied.
“You’re marrying him.”
Dominic’s head snapped toward her. “How do you know that?”
Noah held up a small speaker. “Your office intercom is connected to the old nursery system.”
Marcus muttered, “That explains several things.”
Ava sat on the floor across from Noah.
“It would be a legal arrangement to help with the court case.”
“A fake wife.”
“A temporary wife.”
“Same thing.”
“Probably.”
Dominic frowned. “You are not supposed to agree with him.”
“We haven’t signed anything. You don’t own my opinions.”
Noah studied her. “If you marry him, do I have to call you Mom?”
“Absolutely not.”
“Do you get to tell me what to do?”
“Only when you’re about to fall off architecture.”
“Can I make your wedding cake explode?”
“Only if it’s outside and biodegradable.”
Dominic pinched the bridge of his nose.
Noah almost smiled.
Then footsteps sounded in the hall.
He shoved the speaker beneath his sweater.
“Someone comes in here at night,” he whispered.
Dominic crouched. “Who?”
“I don’t know. They smell like clove gum. They search Mom’s desk.”
Marcus immediately checked the windows and private entrance.
Ava fitted Sofia’s brass key into the metal box. It turned.
Inside lay a photograph and an empty slot shaped like a small recorder.
The photograph showed Claire in a hospital bed.
Beside her stood Sofia.
On the back, in Claire’s handwriting, were six words:
**The wife must protect the son.**
Noah snatched the photograph and studied Sofia’s face.
“She came at night,” he said.
Ava’s pulse jumped. “My sister?”
“Mom called her Fi. She brought strawberry ice cream even when the doctor said no sugar.”
Dominic looked unsettled. “Sofia was assigned after I stopped sleeping at the hospital. Sebastian managed the private nurses.”
“You stopped visiting your dying wife?” Ava asked.
Noah went rigid.
Dominic answered carefully. “Claire asked me not to let Noah see her decline. I stayed here with him at night and went to the hospital while he was at school.”
“You never told me,” Noah said.
“I thought the details would hurt you.”
“Not knowing hurt me.”
He fled with the photograph.
Ava started after him, but Dominic blocked the doorway.
“Give him thirty seconds?” he asked bitterly.
“No. That was for anger. This is grief.”
She pushed past him.
Noah had locked himself in the observatory. Ava sat outside the door and spoke without asking him to open it.
“My sister used to hide the truth from me when she thought I was fragile. I hated it. Then she died, and I hated all the questions more.”
The lock clicked.
Noah sat against the wall, holding the photograph.
“Do you think Dad killed Mom?”
“I think your father hides too much. That is not the same as murder.”
“Would you find out?”
“Yes.”
“Even if you marry him?”
“Especially then.”
He handed her the photograph.
Downstairs, Ava amended her conditions. She would have access to Claire’s medical and household records. Dominic could protect privileged business information, but he could not lie about anything affecting Noah.
Rachel added the language.
Dominic signed the preliminary agreement.
Ava signed beneath him.
The marriage was not official yet. The investigation was.
Before leaving, Ava made Dominic say the agreement aloud to Noah: no one would replace Claire, no one would force affection, and the boy could speak privately to his attorney or therapist. Noah demanded one additional clause—Ava could not be fired for disagreeing with Dominic. Rachel wrote it down while Dominic muttered that his authority was being dismantled by committee.
