"He Needed a Fake Wife—His Son Chose the Maid" Chapter 1 — The Boy Who Blew Up the Engagement Party
The first smoke bomb went off beneath the champagne tower.
Crystal glasses leaped into the air. Women in evening gowns screamed. Three armed men reached inside their jackets as silver smoke rolled across the ballroom floor.
Ava Morales dropped her serving tray and ran toward the nine-year-old boy standing on the balcony rail.
Noah Vale wore a miniature tuxedo, one untied sneaker, and the expression of a child who had just declared war on two hundred adults.
“Nobody move!” he shouted. “The next one has glitter.”
The orchestra stopped.
Dominic Vale turned from the woman whose engagement ring he had been expected to announce before dessert.
He did not raise his voice.
“Noah. Get down.”
His son lifted a black remote.
“Make me.”
Two security officers advanced.
Ava stepped between them and the balcony.
“Back off.”
The taller guard stared at her black maid’s dress and white apron. “Move.”
“He’s nine years old, standing twelve feet above marble, and holding something you think might be dangerous. If you rush him, he falls.”
Dominic’s gray-blue eyes settled on her.
Everyone in Westchester County seemed to know what those eyes meant. Dominic Vale owned a shipping company, half the warehouses along the Hudson, and the kind of influence that made judges answer calls after midnight.
The household staff used a different description when doors were closed.
Mafia king.
“What is your name?” he asked.
“Ava.”
“Ava what?”
“The person stopping your security team from scaring your son off a balcony.”
A guest gasped.
Noah laughed for the first time all evening.
Dominic glanced at the guards. “Stand down.”
Ava approached the balcony slowly.
“You’re the new maid,” Noah said.
“Executive household attendant.”
“That’s rich-people language for maid.”
“And smoke bomb is kid language for desperate cry for attention.”
His grin vanished.
She stopped six feet away. “Is the next device dangerous?”
“Maybe.”
“That means no.”
“You don’t know me.”
“I know you used stage smoke instead of a firecracker because you didn’t want anyone hurt. I know you waited until the servers moved away from the champagne tower. And I know the remote in your hand belongs to a toy race car.”
Noah looked down at it.
Dominic’s almost-fiancée, Celeste Warren, emerged through the smoke in a white silk dress.
“Dominic, this is insane. That child needs to be sent away.”
Noah’s face closed.
Ava saw the change before his father did.
“Bad choice of words,” she murmured.
Noah pressed the remote.
A second device burst beneath the dessert table. Gold glitter shot over Celeste’s dress, hair, and horrified face.
The room went silent.
Ava bit the inside of her cheek.
Dominic did not.
For one impossible second, the most feared man in New York looked as if he might laugh.
Then Celeste slapped him.
“Choose,” she said. “That monster or me.”
Dominic’s expression turned to stone.
“He is my son.”
Celeste pulled off the engagement ring he had not officially given her and threw it into the smoke.

“Then marry him.”
She walked out beneath a shower of glitter.
Noah’s triumph lasted three seconds.
Dominic looked up. “Come down.”
“So you can lock me in my room?”
“So we can discuss why you turned a charity dinner into a tactical event.”
“You mean why I stopped you from marrying a woman who calls me defective when you’re not around?”
Something dangerous moved across Dominic’s face.
“She said that?”
Noah’s chin trembled. He hid it by looking at Ava.
“Catch.”
He tossed her a small metal box.
She caught it against her chest. A tiny sailboat was engraved on the lid.
The same sailboat was carved into the brass key Ava had carried for eleven months, ever since her older sister died.
Before Ava could speak, Noah swung one leg over the rail.
Dominic moved.
So did she.
Ava reached the boy first. She caught his wrist as his polished shoe slipped on the stone ledge.
His body swung over open air.
Guests screamed again.
Dominic grabbed Ava around the waist with one arm and caught Noah’s jacket with the other. Together they hauled him onto the balcony floor.
For a moment, the three of them lay tangled beneath drifting gold glitter.
Dominic’s hand covered the back of Noah’s head.
“I have you,” he said, breathless.
Noah shoved him away.
“You always say that after.”
He ran from the ballroom.
Dominic started after him, but Ava caught his sleeve.
Every guard in the room stiffened.
“Give him thirty seconds,” she said.
“You have touched my son, contradicted my security chief, and grabbed my jacket in front of half of New York.”
“And your son is alive, your terrible engagement is over, and the glitter improves the room.”
His gaze dropped to the box in her hands.
“Where did he get that?”
“I was about to ask you.”
Dominic took it, saw the sailboat, and went completely still.
“This belonged to my wife.”
“Claire Vale?”
“How do you know her name?”
“Everyone knows her name.”
That was true, but incomplete.
Ava’s sister Sofia had worked private hospice care during the last months of Claire’s life. On the night Sofia died in a hit-and-run, she had pressed a brass key into Ava’s palm.
“Find the boy,” she had whispered. “Protect Claire’s boy.”
A man in a gray suit entered through the ballroom doors.
Unlike the guests, he did not look frightened by the smoke or the guns. He carried a leather folder and walked directly to Dominic.
“Mr. Vale?”
Marcus intercepted him. “Who are you?”
“Process server. Westchester County Family Court.”
He held out an envelope.
Dominic opened it. His face revealed nothing, but the paper bent beneath his fingers.
“What is it?” Ava asked.
“Claire’s mother filed for emergency guardianship of Noah.”
The server left. Around them, the ruined party slowly began to breathe again.
Dominic looked toward the hallway where his son had disappeared.

“The petition says my home is unstable, my business puts him in danger, and I have failed to provide a suitable parental environment.”
Ava folded her arms. “Tonight is not helping.”
He turned to her.
“Noah has fired four tutors, two nannies, and a child psychologist.”
“Children can’t fire psychologists.”
“Mine can.”
“That isn’t charming.”
“He listened to you.”
“For approximately forty seconds.”
“A family-court evaluator arrives in ten days.”
Dominic stepped closer. Smoke curled between them.
“How attached are you to being my maid, Ms. Morales?”
“Not enough to ignore the way you phrased that.”
He held out the guardianship petition.
“Then become my wife.”
From the hallway came a crash.
They found Noah beside an overturned display table, stuffing a framed photograph beneath his jacket. It showed Claire holding him as a toddler while Dominic stood several feet away, phone pressed to his ear.
“That stays here,” Dominic said.
“Celeste was going to throw it out.”
Dominic looked toward the door through which she had left. “No one throws away your mother.”
Noah’s anger faltered.
Ava crouched and helped him remove broken glass from the frame. Behind the photograph was a handwritten date and the same sailboat symbol.
“Mom hid things behind pictures,” Noah said. “She said people only look at the front.”
Dominic and Ava exchanged a glance. The metal box was no longer a sentimental object. It was the first piece of a message Claire had built for someone to find.
Noah hugged the damaged photograph to his chest.
“If Ava leaves, I leave.”
“That is not how employment works,” Dominic said.
“Then fix it.”
The boy disappeared upstairs.
Ava looked at the petition, the ruined party, and the man who seemed able to command everyone except his own child.
“I’m still not saying yes.”
Dominic watched the empty staircase. “But you’re no longer saying no.”
