"The Girl the Tide Kept" Chapter 5: What June Knew
Chapter 5: What June Knew
The injunction hearing was set for Monday.
On Saturday, Ben arrived at the house carrying two empty storage bins and the expression of a man prepared to make a difficult decision quickly.
“I’m taking Mom’s things to my place,” he said. “Before they become evidence.”
Eli looked up from the dining table. Maps, reports, and copies of June’s notebook covered every inch of wood.
“They already are evidence.”
“They are her things.”
“She wanted answers.”
“She wanted Mara back. You can’t make that happen by tearing up people’s lawns.”
Lucas stood in the doorway, silent as usual.
Eli pushed back his chair. “You think I’m enjoying this?”
“I think you’ve found a way to be eight years old again, and I think you’ll destroy everything else to change what happened.”
The words landed harder because Ben did not shout them.
Eli turned toward the china cabinet, unable to look at either brother. Behind the glass sat June’s old silver sugar bowl. He remembered her keeping spare keys inside it. On instinct, he lifted the lid.
There was nothing there.
Then he noticed the shallow scratch beneath the rim: a small arrow, pointing toward the base.
June had always hidden things in obvious places, trusting that people saw only what they expected to see.
Eli turned the bowl over. Taped beneath it was a tiny brass key.
The key fit a narrow lock at the back of the cedar chest upstairs.
Inside was a fireproof cash box. The first thing Eli saw was an envelope addressed in June’s handwriting.
For Eli, when you are old enough to stop punishing yourself.
He could not open it.
Not yet.
Beneath the envelope lay a microcassette recorder, three labeled tapes, and a second notebook. The tapes were marked with dates from 1987.
Eli turned the envelope over in his hands. The seal had never been broken. For years, his mother had lived with the possibility that he would one day read it, and for years he had lived in the same house without knowing it existed.
“Open it,” Lucas said.
Eli shook his head. “Not until I know why she hid it.”
Ben stared at the familiar handwriting. “Maybe she hid it because she knew you’d make it about yourself.”
The cruelty of the sentence was softened by Ben’s face. He regretted it as soon as he said it.
“Maybe,” Eli said. “But she also left the key where I would find it.”
Nora came over before dark with a working player from the evidence lab. Ben remained downstairs, arms crossed. Lucas sat on the floor near the wall.
The first tape held kitchen sounds, a kettle, the scrape of a chair. Then June’s voice emerged, younger and steadier than Eli remembered.
“My name is June Vale. Today is May ninth, 1987. I am recording this because Deputy Harlan Reese came to the hospital parking lot after my shift.”

The tape hissed.
“He said I should stop asking about the Morrow property. He said a mother can become confused after a tragedy. I asked why a deputy was giving me advice about a private development. He said, ‘Because you don’t want to turn a missing child into a story people get tired of hearing.’”
Ben made a strangled sound.
June continued. “I am not confused. Daniel Rusk knew details he could not have invented. The road was real. The creek was real. And someone is afraid of what was buried there.”
The recording ended.
Nora wrote down every word. “Reese handled the first hours of the investigation,” she said. “He retired in 1998.”
“He’s dead,” Eli said. He had seen the obituary in the old clippings. “Heart attack.”
Nora opened her laptop. “After retirement, he worked private security for Morrow Coastal.”
The room became quiet again.
On the second tape, June described driving to Idaho to speak to Daniel Rusk. She had found the repair shop through a name in the juvenile-file index she was never supposed to see.
“He was terrified,” she said into the recorder. “Not of me. Of someone else. He said he had carried Mara from the bathhouse because he thought he could make her stop screaming. Then he called someone who said he could help. Daniel would not say the name. He only said the person had access to the marsh and knew where the machines would be.”
Eli closed his eyes.
The tape did not say what happened to Mara. It did not need to. The fact of June driving alone across state lines, sitting across from a frightened young man while her own police department told her to let go, felt like another wound opening beneath the first.
Ben sat down heavily in a chair.
“She knew,” he whispered.
“She suspected,” Nora said. “That distinction matters.”
“Not to her.”
On Monday, Eli stood beside Nora at the courthouse as Morrow’s lawyer argued that excavation would endanger homes, utility lines, and property values. The attorney was Thomas Vale, silver-haired and polished, his voice smooth enough to sound reasonable.
Nora presented Sloane’s report, Mae Torres’s statement, Caleb’s ledger, the aerial images, and June’s recordings. She did not call them proof of murder. She called them a credible basis to inspect a narrow, unbuilt section of the old drainage channel under state supervision.
The judge asked one question.
“Why was this not done in 1985?”
No one from Morrow answered.
The judge granted a limited order: a ground-penetrating survey, then controlled excavation if anomalies were found. The state attorney’s office would supervise. The work could begin within forty-eight hours.
Outside the courtroom, Ben caught Eli by the sleeve.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
Eli looked at him.
“I still hate this,” Ben added. “But I don’t want her to disappear again because I was tired.”
It was not forgiveness. It was enough.
That evening, Nora received a voicemail from an unknown number.
She played it in the kitchen while the brothers listened.
Daniel Rusk’s voice came through thin and shaken.
“You’re looking in the wrong place. The road on the map is close, but it isn’t where she is. I can show you. I’ll show you the place I never told them about.”
He paused.
“Just don’t bring the people who were there before.”
