"The Fire Behind the Blue House" Chapter 1: Smoke on Harbor Street
Chapter 1: Smoke on Harbor Street
The fire had already eaten the porch when Detective Mara Vale reached Harbor Street.
It was four-thirty in the morning, the hour when St. Oran looked almost innocent. Rainwater glittered in the potholes. The bait shop across the street was dark. Somewhere beyond the row of sagging houses, the Gulf kept breathing against the seawall.
The blue shotgun house was not innocent.
Flames clawed out of its upstairs windows, orange and violent against the wet black sky. Two firefighters disappeared through the front door while another dragged a hose across Arthur Bell's dying lawn.
"Victim?" Mara asked the fire captain.
"One confirmed upstairs. Male. We don't have a name yet."
"Anyone else?"
"Neighbor says he rented a room to a woman."
Mara looked at the house. Its porch light was still on beneath the smoke, stubbornly glowing through the haze. A cheap plastic camera hung above it, its casing warped and dripping.
"Get that camera protected," she said. "And find out whether it saved to a cloud account."
Captain Lyle gave her a tired nod. "You think this is arson?"
Mara watched a firefighter kick open an upstairs window from inside. "I think it's too early to call it anything."
Ten minutes later, the answer came down the ladder under a silver emergency blanket.
Arthur Bell was seventy-eight years old, according to the driver's license in his wallet. He had once repaired boats at the municipal marina and still carried a small brass compass in his pocket. The fire had not killed him.
The medical examiner's investigator stood beside Mara beneath an umbrella and kept his voice low.
"Head injury. Sharp-force wounds, too. We'll know more later, but this happened before the fire."
Mara's eyes returned to the upstairs window.
Across the street, a woman in a bathrobe was crying into both hands. Mara crossed to her.
"I'm Detective Vale. Did you see anyone leave the house?"
The woman swallowed hard. "The girl. Erin. I saw her go out around four. Barefoot. I thought she'd forgotten her shoes again."
"Was she hurt?"
"There was something dark on her leg. I thought it was mud." The woman looked toward the blue house. "Then I smelled smoke."
Mara wrote down the name. "Did Arthur have visitors?"
"Not much. He kept to himself. He was good to that girl, though. Too good, if you ask me."
At 5:12, Officer Redd called from two blocks away.
"We found someone matching the neighbor's description," he said. "Outside the QuickMart."
The woman was sitting on the curb when Mara arrived. She looked younger than thirty-four in the hard convenience-store light, thin shoulders tucked inside an oversized gray sweatshirt. Her bare feet were black with grit. One ankle was streaked with blood.
A clear evidence bag lay beside the patrol car. Inside it were a kitchen knife, a rusted claw hammer, and a brass house key.

"My name is Mara Vale," Mara said, crouching a few feet away. "Can you tell me yours?"
The woman stared past her at the sliding glass doors. "Erin."
"Erin what?"
"Kessler."
"Do you live on Harbor Street?"
"No. I don't live anywhere."
"Do you know Arthur Bell?"
Erin's face flickered. It was gone so quickly another detective might have missed it.
"No."
"He owns the blue house at 814."
"I know who owns it." Her fingers worried the torn cuff of her sleeve. "He was my employer."
Officer Redd shifted behind Mara. "She told me she was walking from the beach."
"I was," Erin said. "Then I went to the store."
"With a knife and a hammer?" Mara asked.
Erin looked at the evidence bag as if she had never seen it. "The knife is mine. The hammer was in a closet."
"Whose closet?"
"I don't know."
Mara did not press. Erin was shaking, and the blood on her ankle had begun to drip onto the curb.
"Do you need medical care?"
"It's my toe. I cut my toe."
Redd glanced down. The blood was high on Erin's ankle, not near her toes.
"That doesn't look like a toe injury," he said quietly.
Erin's mouth tightened. "You don't know what my body feels like."
Mara held up a hand to stop him. "We'll get you checked. But first, you need to understand that a man has been found dead at 814 Harbor Street."
For the first time, Erin looked directly at her.
"Dead?"
"Yes."
"I didn't know there was a fire."
"Then tell me what you did know."
Erin looked down at her bleeding ankle. "I knew I had to leave."
By sunrise, the blue house had stopped burning. It stood open and soaked, the smoke rising from its roof in thin gray ribbons.
Mara returned to the kitchen with the fire marshal after the structure had been cleared. Most of the downstairs room had survived. On the table, beneath a warped ceramic sugar bowl, lay a yellow legal pad. The top page had been protected from the water by an overturned glass.
The handwriting was careful and old-fashioned.
If Erin comes back, call me first.
Below it was a phone number and a name Mara did not recognize.
Lena Ortiz.
Mara folded the page into an evidence sleeve. Outside, the morning sun touched the burned blue paint and made it shine like wet skin.
