"The Maid the Mafia King Locked Inside His Mansion" Chapter 10 — The Last Toast
Two hours before the gala, Naomi fastened the recording wire beneath Elena’s collar while Declan watched from the hotel suite.
“Victor will search her,” he said.
“Not personally in front of cameras,” Naomi replied. “And the transmitter is built into the uniform seam.”
Declan looked at Elena. “You do not have to do this.”
“Yes, I do.”
“The evidence from the clinic may already be enough.”
“Enough for arrest is not enough to defeat every story he built around us. The board needs to see him lose control in public.”
Naomi left them alone while she tested the receiver.
Declan adjusted the plain wedding band on his finger. “I spent my life believing control prevented loss.”
“And did it?”
“No.”
“Then trust the plan.”
“I trust the plan. I do not trust Victor near you.”
Elena took his hand and placed it against the wire beneath her collar.
“You will hear every word. But you enter only if I use the phrase ‘the whiskey is warm’ or if Naomi moves first.”
“That phrase is absurd.”
“That is why I’ll remember it.”
“Elena.”
“Say you agree.”
His hand rested over her heartbeat.
“I agree.”
It was not surrender. It was partnership, and it frightened him more.
Victor raised his champagne glass beneath the Blackstone Hotel chandeliers and smiled at the cameras.
“To a future free from betrayal.”
The ballroom doors opened.
Elena walked in wearing the same black housekeeper’s uniform she had worn the night she saved Declan’s life.
Conversation died across the room.
Declan entered ten feet behind her in a black suit. Gabe and Naomi remained outside the visible crowd. Catherine watched from the press section beside Owen and Lucia.
Victor’s glass stopped halfway to his mouth.
Elena approached the stage alone.
“You forgot to invite the largest shareholder.”
Reporters surged toward her.
Victor recovered quickly. “Mrs. Reyes is experiencing the effects of a traumatic episode. My nephew has exploited her grief in an attempt to retain control of this company.”
Elena climbed the stage.
A wire lay beneath the collar of her uniform. Three federal recording teams captured every word, but a confession still required Victor to believe he controlled the room.
“Tell them why I’m wearing this,” she said.
Victor looked at the uniform. “Because you enjoy theater.”
“Because it is what I wore when your poison missed me.”
The board members shifted.
Victor tried to end the broadcast, but the hotel’s production manager had transferred control to the federal team. Every ballroom screen now mirrored the evidence feed, and the livestream continued to shareholders watching remotely.
Miriam stepped onto the stage carrying the sealed original trust recovered from a safe-deposit box registered to Margaret Cross. The physical document bore aged ink, embossed seals, and a notary record verified that afternoon.
“The founder agreement is no longer merely a digital copy,” she announced. “Gabriel Reyes’s estate holds thirty-five percent of Cross Freight and all associated voting rights.”

Three directors immediately moved away from Victor.
He looked at them with open contempt. “You sat at my table for twenty years.”
One director removed his Cross lapel pin. “That was before we learned who paid for the table.”
Victor gestured toward a screen. “We have hospital records proving Elena Reyes purchased the substance that nearly killed Commissioner Hale.”
The forged security video appeared.
Elena faced the crowd. “The woman in that recording is my sister, Lucia Reyes. Dr. Adrian Shaw falsified her death eleven years ago and held her under medication on Victor Cross’s orders.”
Lucia stood.
Gasps moved through the ballroom.
Victor’s face hardened. “A disturbed woman coached by federal agents.”
Shaw appeared on the screen by live video from federal custody.
“Victor ordered the substitutions,” he said. “Gabriel Reyes, Patrick Cross, Lucia Reyes, Marcus Hale. All of them.”
Victor set down his glass.
“A desperate addict will say anything for immunity.”
Elena moved closer. “Then say it yourself.”
“Say what?”
“That my father should have known when he lost.”
For the first time, uncertainty entered Victor’s eyes.
He remembered the clinic.
“You were recording me.”
“Your cameras were. The FBI recovered the local archive before the fire reached it.”
Naomi signaled the hotel technician.
Victor’s own voice filled the ballroom.
Your father had the same inability to recognize when he had lost.
Then Elena’s voice: Did he lose before or after you had Shaw poison him?
The recording captured Shaw’s frightened movement and Victor’s silence.
It was not a full confession. It did not need to be. Miriam displayed the original trust, recovered patient records, and the payment trail connecting Victor to Shaw.
Naomi then released a second recording authorized by Shaw’s counsel. His voice identified the compounds used on Patrick Cross and Marcus Hale, the hospital charts he altered, and the unidentified body substituted for Lucia after the apartment fire.
Dates appeared beside wire transfers from Victor’s private holding company.
Elena watched the audience understand that the scandal was not one attempted poisoning. It was a family system built to turn hospitals, household staff, and frightened relatives into tools.
Victor saw the understanding too.
His polished public face finally disappeared.
Catherine stepped forward with the final piece.
“I altered the board notices under duress,” she said. “Victor kidnapped my son and ordered me to destroy the Reyes file.”
Owen stood beside her.
The board chairman called for security.
Victor laughed.
“Security?” He looked toward Declan. “Half the men in this hotel answer to our family.”
Declan walked to the edge of the stage.
“Not tonight.”
Every Cross guard removed his earpiece and stepped away from Victor.
Declan had dissolved the Lakefront Circle’s private enforcement chain that afternoon. Freight security now answered to an outside compliance firm under federal monitoring.
Victor stared at his nephew.
“You destroyed your own power for a maid.”
Declan looked at Elena, not Victor.

“No. I stopped confusing fear with power because my wife refused to.”
The room erupted in questions.
Naomi and two agents approached the stage with an arrest warrant.
Victor backed toward the bar.
“You think courts will protect you?” he shouted at Elena. “Your father trusted contracts. Mateo trusted evidence. Both died.”
His hand disappeared beneath the bar cloth.
Declan saw the gun first.
He moved toward Elena.
She did not wait to be saved.
Victor raised the weapon. Elena seized the heavy silver champagne bucket and swung it into his wrist.
The gun fired into the ceiling.
Declan drove Victor to the floor. His hands closed around his uncle’s throat.
Victor smiled through the pressure.
“Do it. Show her what you are.”
Declan’s face became the one Chicago feared.
Elena knelt beside him.
“Declan.”
He did not release Victor.
“He killed our fathers. He killed Mateo.”
“I know.”
“He took Lucia.”
“I know.”
Victor’s face darkened.
Elena placed her hand over Declan’s wedding ring.
“If you kill him, his last act will be choosing who you become.”
Declan looked at her.
The whole room disappeared from his eyes until only the choice remained.
Then he released Victor and stood.
Naomi secured the handcuffs.
Victor coughed on the floor. “You are weak.”
Declan adjusted his cuffs.
“No. I am finished inheriting you.”
Declan stepped away before agents lifted Victor from the floor. Elena saw the effort in the tremor of his right hand. Mercy had not come naturally. That made it a choice instead of a performance.
She took his hand in front of the cameras.
“You kept your promise,” she said.
“I nearly didn’t.”
“Nearly is not the same as failing.”
He looked at their joined hands as though he had never been offered that distinction.
Agents led Victor away as reporters shouted after him.
The board chairman approached Elena with the original trust in both hands.
“Mrs. Cross, the directors are prepared to recognize your voting rights immediately.”
Elena looked down at her uniform.
“My name is Reyes.”
“Ms. Reyes,” he corrected. “Will you stop the terminal sale?”
She took the document her father had died trying to preserve.
“Yes.”
The vote was held before midnight.
Victor’s sale failed nine to zero.
But when Elena turned to find Declan after the result, he was gone.
His wedding ring rested beside the unsigned thirty-day dissolution agreement.
