"The Maid the Mafia King Locked Inside His Mansion" Chapter 8 — The Marriage Clause
Elena married Declan Cross at 9:17 the next morning in a Cook County judge’s private chambers.
She wore a navy dress borrowed from Ruth and the small gold hoops Mateo had given her fifteen years earlier. Declan wore charcoal instead of black because Elena told him she refused to marry a man dressed for a funeral.
Miriam and Gabe served as witnesses.
Catherine attended by encrypted video while the FBI protected her at an undisclosed location.
The judge examined the marriage agreement for nearly twenty minutes.
“Mrs. Reyes, are you entering this marriage freely?”
“Yes, Your Honor.”
“Mr. Cross, do you understand that this agreement grants you no authority over Mrs. Reyes’s separate property or corporate claim?”
“I do.”
“And the provision requiring mutual consent for security restrictions?”
Declan glanced at Elena. “I understand that provision particularly well.”
The judge’s mouth twitched.
They exchanged plain courthouse bands purchased from a jewelry counter that opened at eight. Declan had offered the Cross family diamond. Elena had asked whether it came with ghosts or voting rights.
He bought the plain band.
When the judge pronounced them married, silence settled between them.
There was no audience expecting a kiss.
Declan still asked, “May I?”
Elena heard the question beneath the question.
She touched his face where she had struck him the day before and kissed him once.
It was supposed to seal the performance.
Instead, his hand stopped at her waist and waited. When she did not pull away, he drew her closer.
The kiss deepened for one dangerous second.
Elena stepped back first.
“Thirty days,” she said.
Declan’s eyes remained on her mouth. “Of course.”
Outside the courthouse, reporters packed the sidewalk. News of the trust claim had leaked before sunrise.
Questions struck from every direction.
“Mr. Cross, did you marry your housekeeper to control her shares?”
“Mrs. Cross, were you paid?”
“Did Elena Reyes poison Commissioner Hale?”
Declan reached for Elena’s arm.
She moved to the microphones before he could guide her away.
“My name is Elena Reyes,” she said. “I worked as executive housekeeper at the Cross estate, and I am proud of the work I did. My father, Gabriel Reyes, co-founded Cross Freight. Evidence of his ownership was concealed after his death.”
The crowd quieted enough to hear her next words.
“I did not poison Marcus Hale. I saved him. Anyone who believes a uniform makes a woman invisible should pay very close attention to what happens next.”
Declan stood half a step behind her.
Not in front.
The photograph appeared online within minutes: Chicago’s feared billionaire allowing the maid to take the microphone.
At Cross Tower, Miriam filed the marriage certificate and pooled voting notice. Victor’s attorneys challenged both, but the emergency board vote could not proceed while the court reviewed the verified founder trust.
They had bought seventy-two hours.
Naomi called with a location connected to Owen’s photograph. The digital clock model was sold to juvenile detention contractors. The concrete paint matched a decommissioned Cross Freight training center near Joliet.

FBI agents raided the building before noon.
They found Owen locked in a basement office, dehydrated but alive.
Catherine’s sob came through Elena’s phone when mother and son were reunited.
“You brought him home,” Catherine said.
“We all did,” Elena replied.
Declan watched her end the call.
“You could have claimed the victory.”
“People who need all the credit usually did the least work.”
“My uncle would hate you.”
“Your uncle already drugged my sister and murdered my family. I can survive his disapproval.”
By evening, Elena and Declan returned to the penthouse as husband and wife.
Ruth had sent dinner from the estate: roast chicken, potatoes, and a note saying contractual marriages still required food. Elena ate at the kitchen island while Declan removed his jacket and answered three board calls.
On the fourth call, a director asked whether Elena was emotionally stable enough to vote.
Declan put the call on speaker.
Elena leaned toward the phone. “I stabilized a poisoned man while your chairman watched. Would you like to compare résumés?”
The director ended the call.
Declan set down his phone. “You could run the board.”
“I ran a night-shift trauma unit. Your board has fewer bodily fluids.”
He laughed, a brief unguarded sound she had never heard from him.
The domestic ease of the moment was more dangerous than the courthouse kiss.
Two garment bags waited in the bedroom suite. Someone had moved Elena’s belongings into Declan’s room for the benefit of staff gossip.
Elena carried them into the adjoining guest room herself.
Declan leaned against the connecting doorway.
“The contract says separate bedrooms.”
“I can read.”
“You are standing in my doorway.”
“Our doorway, legally.”
She looked at him.
He lifted both hands and stepped back.
“Your boundary.”
Elena studied him. “Why did you ask before kissing me?”
“Because the marriage was strategic. The kiss did not have to be.”
“And was it?”
“Strategic?”
“Necessary.”
Declan’s gaze settled on her. “No.”
The answer warmed the space between them.
Elena closed the connecting door gently, not because she wanted it locked, but because she needed one night in which desire did not make another decision for her.
Ten minutes later, she opened it again.
“Lucia is awake,” she said. “I’m going to the hospital.”
Declan did not mention the kiss or the closed door. He simply reached for his coat.
The easy compliance unsettled her more than another argument.
At the elevator, Elena looked at the coat.
“Are you inviting yourself?”
Declan stopped. “May I come with you?”
She let him wait long enough to understand that the answer belonged to her.
“Yes.”
He arranged a secure vehicle only after she nodded.
They rode to a private rehabilitation hospital in Streeterville. Lucia cried when she saw the wedding band, then laughed when Elena explained the thirty-day contract.
“You always did choose complicated men,” Lucia whispered.
“Mateo was not complicated.”
“Mateo alphabetized the spice cabinet.”
“That was helpful.”
For twenty minutes, they were sisters again.
Then Lucia remembered something.
“Shaw kept asking about a song. ‘Beautiful Dreamer.’ He wanted to know whether Mateo ever sang it around me.”
Elena and Declan exchanged a look.
Victor knew about the music box.
“Did you tell him anything?” Elena asked.
“Only that Mateo whistled it when he was scared.” Lucia squeezed her hand. “There was another doctor. A woman with red glasses. She gave the injections when Shaw was gone.”
The room door opened.
A nurse in red glasses entered pushing a medication cart.
Declan moved first, but the nurse threw a syringe toward his face. Elena knocked his arm aside and the needle struck the wall.
The woman triggered the fire alarm.
Smoke doors dropped between Declan and Elena. Orderlies ran into the hall. Sprinklers erupted.
Elena turned toward Lucia’s bed.
It was empty.
The medication cart concealed a narrow transfer chair. The false nurse had already pushed Lucia through the service exit.
Elena ran after them.
A second attacker stepped from the stairwell and pressed a cloth over her mouth.
She drove her heel down on his foot and caught his wrist, but the sweet chemical odor had already filled her lungs.
Declan struck the glass smoke door from the other side.
“Elena!”
She reached toward him as her knees failed.
The last thing she saw was Declan’s wedding band hitting the glass while the attacker dragged her into the stairwell.
