"The Maid the Mafia King Locked Inside His Mansion" Chapter 6 — The Man at the Crash
“Play the rest,” Elena said.
Declan stood across the penthouse library with the crash video frozen between them.
“Victor sent everything he wanted you to see.”
“Then show me what he didn’t.”
He opened a wall safe and removed an encrypted drive. No delay. No argument. He connected it to the screen and entered a twenty-character key.
The complete traffic recording began nineteen minutes earlier.
Mateo’s car entered the intersection. A black SUV struck the rear quarter panel and forced him into the barrier. The SUV stopped beyond the camera. Two men approached Mateo’s vehicle.
Another car arrived.
Declan jumped out before it stopped moving.
Onscreen, he fired once into the pavement. The attackers fled. Declan tore at the crushed driver’s door, then smashed the rear window to reach Mateo from inside.
Elena pressed one hand to her mouth.
The version Victor sent had begun after Declan already pulled the attackers away.
Audio from Declan’s dashboard recorder joined the image.
“Stay with me,” the younger Declan said.
Mateo coughed. “Victor knows about Elena.”
“Where is the evidence?”
“Back in the house. Margaret’s music box. Reyes key opens the base.”
Declan called 911 and gave the location. Mateo caught his sleeve.
“Don’t tell Elena until you can prove it. She’ll come after him.”
“She deserves the truth.”
“She deserves to live.”
Mateo’s voice weakened.
“Protect her from your uncle. Not from herself.”
Sirens sounded in the distance.
The recording ended.
Elena remained standing because sitting felt too much like collapse.
“You tried to save him.”
“Yes.”
“And then you let me believe he died alone.”
“Yes.”
The answer hurt because he did not soften it.
Elena struck him across the face.
Gabe moved at the library door, but Declan raised one hand.
He accepted the blow without retaliation.
“That was for deciding what grief I could survive,” she said.
“Understood.”
“This does not make us even.”
“I know.”
She turned back to the screen. Mateo’s final image remained reflected in the glass.
“What is the Reyes key?”
Miriam examined the trust copy. A small diagram beneath Gabriel’s signature showed a two-part founder seal: a black cross and a diagonal silver bar.
“The cuff link,” Elena said.
Gabe retrieved the evidence photograph. The diagonal section looked decorative, but magnification revealed a narrow groove.
“A physical key hidden inside a cuff link,” he said.
“The cuff link found at the bar was bait,” Declan replied. “Victor wanted Elena to recognize it. But he may not know it opens anything.”
Elena looked toward the east, where morning light touched the river.
“Margaret’s music box is in the Lake Forest nursery.”
Ruth had shown it to Elena once: a dark walnut box with a brass ballerina that played a slowed version of “Beautiful Dreamer.” It had belonged to Declan’s mother and remained in the locked family wing.
Gabe’s phone rang.
Special Agent Naomi Price had traced Lucia’s call to three possible warehouses near the Calumet River. FBI teams could move within forty minutes.

“Victor will relocate her when he realizes the video failed,” Elena said.
“Price wants you in a secure federal location,” Gabe told her.
“No. I can help identify Lucia.”
Declan reached for his coat. “You are not entering a warehouse.”
Elena looked at him.
He stopped.
The protection contract lay on the library desk, signed but still marked with her red corrections.
“Ask,” she said.
The word cost him.
“Will you remain in the command vehicle while trained agents enter?”
“Yes, if I hear the operation and speak to Lucia the moment they locate her.”
“Agreed.”
At the Calumet staging point, rain struck the roof of an unmarked federal van. Elena wore a headset beside Naomi Price, a compact Black woman in her fifties whose calm voice made everyone else lower theirs.
Agents entered the first warehouse. Empty.
The second contained medical restraints, sedatives, and Lucia’s blood on a cot.
No Lucia.
Elena’s breathing shortened.
Declan sat opposite her, hands clasped tightly enough to whiten his knuckles.
He did not tell her to calm down. He did not touch her without asking.
He simply matched his breathing to hers until her lungs followed.
At the third warehouse, an agent called, “Victim located.”
Lucia was found inside a locked office, semiconscious but alive. Shaw had fled through a river access door minutes earlier.
Agents also recovered pharmacy labels, forged identification cards, and eleven years of handwritten medication logs. Each page reduced Lucia to dosage, compliance, and usefulness. Elena read three lines before Naomi took the notebook from her.
“You do not need to absorb all of this tonight,” the agent said.
“It happened whether I absorb it or not.”
“Yes. But surviving evidence is not the same as processing it.”
Naomi promised the originals would enter federal custody and that Lucia would receive an independent patient advocate. No Cross employee would control her doctors, visitors, or testimony.
Elena glanced at Declan.
He nodded. “That is how it should be.”
Elena spoke through an agent’s phone.
“Lucy, it’s me.”
Her sister’s eyes opened.
“You came.”
“I never stopped looking. I just looked in the wrong place.”
Lucia began to cry.
At Northwestern Memorial, doctors confirmed years of coerced sedation and identity fraud. Elena sat beside Lucia until she slept.
Lucia woke twice in panic. The first time, she believed Elena was another hallucination Shaw had created to reward obedience. The second time, she asked what year it was.
Elena answered each question without correcting the fragments that did not fit together.
She learned that Lucia had survived the apartment fire with burns and a head injury. Shaw moved her from the emergency department before police arrived, substituted the body of an unidentified woman, and falsified both sets of records. Victor told Lucia that Elena had accepted money to stop searching. Whenever Lucia challenged the story, Shaw increased her medication.
“I hated you,” Lucia whispered.

Elena held her hand. “You were allowed to hate the person they invented.”
“I signed things.”
“You survived.”
“I picked up the poison.”
“You did not know.”
Lucia looked toward Declan through the glass wall. “Is he the one Mateo warned us about?”
Elena followed her gaze.
“I don’t know yet.”
It was the most honest answer she had.
Declan waited outside the room for six hours.
When Elena finally emerged, he held out coffee.
“You could have left,” she said.
“No.”
“Was that an order or an answer?”
“An answer.”
They sat in a quiet family alcove overlooking the first gray movement of morning traffic. Declan had blood on one cuff from the warehouse evidence room, though none of it was his.
“Mateo asked me to protect you,” he said. “I turned that into surveillance because surveillance was something I understood.”
“He also said not to protect me from myself.”
“I heard him.”
“Did you?”
Declan looked down at his hands. “I am trying to.”
Elena had expected apologies to sound smoother from a man who negotiated billion-dollar contracts. His awkwardness made the words harder to dismiss.
“Trust is information given before I force it out of you,” she said.
“Then here is information. Victor will come after the music box. And if the evidence names him, I will want to kill him.”
“But you won’t.”
“I have not promised that.”
“You will have to.”
Their eyes met over untouched coffee.
The next choice between them had already taken shape.
She accepted the cup.
Their fingers touched. This time neither moved away immediately.
“The music box,” Elena said. “Victor may reach it before we do.”
Declan’s phone vibrated.
Ruth was calling from Lake Forest.
The estate alarm had been disabled from inside.
The nursery door stood open.
And Margaret Cross’s music box was gone.
