"The Maid the Mafia King Locked Inside His Mansion" Chapter 5 — The Name in the Will
Elena watched the hospital footage fourteen times before she accepted that the woman was Lucia.
The tilt of the chin. The small scar through the left eyebrow. The habit of rubbing one thumb across the opposite knuckle when frightened.
No disguise could manufacture those things.
“The body from the fire was identified through dental records,” Elena said. “My mother and I buried her.”
Gabe stood beside the hospital security desk, speaking quietly into his phone. Declan had moved everyone except the detective and Marcus’s assigned nurse out of the corridor.
“Who signed the dental identification?” Declan asked.
Elena already knew.
“Adrian Shaw.”
Declan’s face went still.
His private physician had treated Lucia after a car accident two years before the fire. He had access to her charts, X-rays, and dental referrals.
Gabe ended his call. “Shaw left the hospital twelve minutes ago. His driver says he ordered the car sent home and took a taxi.”
“Freeze every Cross account he can access,” Declan said. “Send his photograph to the airports and private fields.”
“You cannot freeze a physician’s accounts because you are angry,” Elena said.
“I can freeze the company cards and shell accounts he uses. The FBI can do the rest when we give them probable cause.”
The reminder that Declan understood legal boundaries did not make his other operations legal. It did make him more dangerous than a man who relied only on violence.
Marcus lifted one trembling hand from the bed.
“Victor knows you’re checking the old trust,” he whispered.
Declan moved closer. “What trust?”
“Your mother’s attorney called me last week. He found a sealed codicil in an off-site probate file.”
The monitor quickened.
The nurse entered and ordered them out before Marcus could say more.
In the corridor, Elena faced Declan.
“You knew my father’s name when you hired me.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Mateo had found something.”
“Yes.”
“How many parts of my life did you investigate before you let me polish your silver?”
His expression tightened. “I approved your employment because Cross enemies had begun asking about Gabriel Reyes’s surviving daughter. I thought the safest place was one I controlled.”
“You made me clean the house that erased my father.”
“I gave you access.”
“Without telling me what the access meant.”
“Because I did not know whom you would trust.”
Elena stepped close enough to keep her next words private.
“You keep calling secrecy protection. It is still a cage.”
They returned to the penthouse just before dawn. Declan’s corporate attorney was waiting with a gray-haired probate lawyer named Miriam Cole.
Miriam placed a sealed envelope on the dining table.
“Margaret Cross retained me twenty-four years ago,” she said. “She instructed me to open this file if an original Cross-Reyes ledger resurfaced or if Elena Reyes became the target of a crime connected to Cross Freight.”
Elena did not sit.
Miriam broke the seal.

Inside was a photocopy of a 1989 trust agreement. Gabriel Reyes and Patrick Cross had each received equal founder shares. Later investment diluted both positions, but Gabriel’s estate still owned thirty-five percent when he died.
“My mother told me he sold everything,” Elena said.
“The recorded sale is a forgery,” Miriam replied. “Margaret discovered discrepancies but could not locate the signed original. Without it, Victor controlled the corporate records and the family witnesses.”
Declan read the document over Miriam’s shoulder.
“If the original exists, Elena is the largest individual shareholder after me.”
“She also holds veto rights over a sale of the freight terminals,” Miriam said.
Elena traced her father’s signature without touching the paper. All her life, Gabriel Reyes had been described as a driver who dreamed beyond his means. The trust agreement told a different story. He had negotiated routes, contributed trucks, and risked his savings beside Patrick Cross.
“If this becomes public, they will say I slept my way into the company,” she said.
Miriam removed her glasses. “Some will.”
Declan’s eyes hardened.
Elena looked at him. “You cannot threaten every person who insults me.”
“Not every person.”
“None of them.”
“That seems unnecessarily broad.”
Despite herself, she almost smiled.
Gabe placed a tablet on the table. “Victor scheduled an emergency board vote for tomorrow night. He wants to sell the lake terminals to North Meridian Holdings.”
Elena recognized the name from Mateo’s notes. North Meridian was one of the shell companies moving stolen medical supplies.
“He has to discredit me before I can assert the claim,” she said.
Miriam nodded. “A poisoning order under your signature would be useful.”
The penthouse intercom chimed.
Every guard drew a weapon.
The screen showed a courier holding a white bakery box. Gabe directed security to intercept him in the lobby.
Inside the box was a prepaid phone.
It rang once.
Elena answered on speaker.
Lucia’s face appeared.
She was older and thinner, with a fading bruise beneath one eye. But she was alive.
“Elena?”
Elena gripped the phone with both hands. “Where are you?”
Lucia began to cry. “He said you knew.”
“Who said?”
“Dr. Shaw. He said you took the settlement and left me at the clinic.”
“I thought you were dead.”
Lucia looked offscreen. Fear changed her expression.
“They made me pick up the package. I didn’t know what was in it until Victor showed me the news.”
Declan signaled Gabe to trace the call.
“Tell me where you are,” Elena said.
“I don’t know. There are trains. A warehouse sign says Calumet.”
A man’s hand seized Lucia’s hair and pulled her out of view.
Victor appeared on the screen.
“Good morning, Elena.”
Declan moved beside her. “Release her.”
Victor smiled. “My nephew still thinks commands are currency.”
“What do you want?” Elena asked.
“Renounce Gabriel’s claim and sign a statement admitting you poisoned Marcus. Lucia comes home.”
“You kept her alive for eleven years?”
“Shaw kept her medicated. I kept her useful.”
Elena’s grief became something cleaner than rage.
“You should have killed me at the toast.”
Victor’s smile faded. “Your husband said something similar.”
The call ended.
Gabe had only a broad industrial zone on the trace.
Declan reached for the phone, but Elena held it away.
“No private army,” she said. “We take this to the FBI.”
“A task-force leak helped Victor before.”
“Then Gabe chooses one agent and we control the evidence. If you turn Calumet into a shooting ground, Lucia may die.”
Declan’s need to act was visible in every rigid line of his body.
He forced it down.
“Gabe, call Special Agent Naomi Price. No one else.”
It was the first time Elena saw him surrender power because she was right.
Miriam pushed the trust copy toward Elena. “There is one more document.”
It was a still image from traffic surveillance on the night Mateo died.
Mateo’s car rested against the barrier. Smoke rose from the hood.
Declan stood beside the driver’s door.
The time stamp was twelve minutes before the official emergency call.
Elena looked from the photograph to him.
“You said Mateo never arrived.”
“He didn’t arrive at the diner.”
“Because you met him at the crash.”
Declan did not deny it.
The phone rang again. This time Victor sent a video.
Declan leaned through Mateo’s broken window. Mateo lifted one bloody hand toward him.
Then Declan stepped back.
The video stopped before the ambulance arrived.
Victor’s message appeared beneath it.
ASK HIM WHY HE LET YOUR HUSBAND DIE.
