"The Maid the Mafia King Locked Inside His Mansion" Chapter 2 — The Photograph in Her Room
Elena sat at the end of Declan Cross’s dining table with no shoes, no phone, and three armed men between her and the door.
Ruth’s search had found nothing except a roll of peppermint candy, a laundry key, and the inhaler Elena carried for seasonal asthma.
That had not earned her freedom.
Across the table, Declan changed from his tuxedo jacket into a plain black dress shirt while Gabe placed evidence bags beneath the chandelier.
The silver cuff link gleamed inside one bag.
The decanter stopper rested inside another.
“The police took the glasses,” Elena said. “Why do you still have that?”
“Because one of my officers collected it before Lake Forest police entered the room.”
“Your officers?”
“Private security.”
“Men with concealed rifles and no visible licenses.”
Gabe’s eyes narrowed.
Declan poured coffee but did not drink it. “You have worked in my home for eight months. Pretending you didn’t know what kind of man employed you insults both of us.”
Elena rubbed the red mark the search had left on her wrist.
“I knew Cross Freight had a reputation.”
“That is a careful answer.”
“Careful answers keep domestic workers employed around rich families.”
“You are not employed at the moment.”
She met his eyes. “Then give me my phone and let me leave.”
“Someone tried to poison a glass with my fingerprints on it. You identified the danger before my physician did. Then you recognized a cuff link connected to your dead husband.”
Declan pushed the untouched coffee away.
“You are not leaving until I know whether you saved me or staged the entire thing.”
Elena leaned back. “If I wanted you dead, I would have let you drink.”
Gabe looked down, hiding what might have been approval.
Declan did not blink. “Tell me about Mateo.”
“No.”
“Mrs. Reyes.”
“You searched my body and took my phone. You do not get my marriage too.”
Ruth entered carrying a tray of sealed water bottles. She set one in front of Elena and broke the cap herself.
The small gesture nearly undid her.
Elena drank slowly.
Gabe opened a laptop. “Hospital confirms Marcus Hale is alive. Toxicology is pending. The event bartender is missing.”
“He isn’t missing,” Elena said.
All three looked at her.
“His car is still behind the carriage house. I saw it when I checked the delivery entrance before dinner.”
Gabe spoke into his radio.
Declan watched Elena. “You inspect employee vehicles?”
“I manage the household staff. I notice who arrives and who leaves.”
“What else did you notice?”
Elena pictured the ballroom again. The photographer positioning Declan. Victor insisting on the family decanter. Dr. Shaw standing close enough to intervene but not close enough to drink.
“Your uncle chose the whiskey,” she said.
The temperature in the room seemed to drop.
“Victor gives me that bottle every year,” Declan said.
“He told the bartender to open it at ten. I heard him.”

“And you waited until I raised the glass?”
“An unopened bottle wasn’t evidence of anything. The oily film was.”
Gabe’s radio cracked.
“We found the bartender,” a guard reported. “He’s unconscious in the laundry loading bay.”
Elena stood.
Three weapons shifted.
“He may need medical help.”
“Sit down,” Gabe said.
Declan considered her for one beat. “Bring her.”
They crossed the service corridors at a run. The bartender lay behind a linen cart, breathing but unresponsive. A bruise darkened his temple.
Elena knelt.
“Pulse is steady. Pupils equal. He may have been struck and sedated.”
She checked his hands. A faint gray powder clung beneath one thumbnail.
“Get a photograph before anyone cleans that.”
Gabe crouched beside the decanter bag. “Same color as the residue on the stopper.”
Elena looked at the cut-glass stopper through the plastic.
“The whiskey may not have been poisoned at all. The stopper was.”
Declan understood first. “Anything poured after it was replaced would be contaminated.”
“And the bartender could open a clean bottle in front of witnesses.”
The attack had required access to the family liquor cabinet, the service schedule, and Declan’s annual toast.
It had come from inside the estate.
An ambulance took the bartender away. Gabe assigned guards to every exit.
Declan turned to Elena. “You are coming upstairs.”
“I am going home.”
“Your apartment is forty minutes away, and the person who did this knows your name.”
“So do several hundred payroll forms.”
“This is not a request.”
Anger steadied her. “That sentence may work on men who owe you money. It does not work on me.”
Declan stepped closer, but Elena refused to give him ground.
“Someone placed evidence from your husband at an attempted murder,” he said quietly. “If you walk out, I cannot protect you.”
“Maybe I need protection from you.”
His gaze held hers. “Maybe.”
The honesty disturbed her more than a threat would have.
Ruth intervened. “Elena should collect clothes from her room before you move her anywhere.”
Declan nodded. “Gabe goes with you.”
Elena’s staff room occupied the second floor of the service wing. She unlocked the door and knew instantly that someone had been inside.
The room was small but hers: a narrow bed, two shelves of nursing textbooks she had never been able to throw away, and a ceramic bowl painted by her mother. She had refused the larger suite Ruth offered because the smaller room had one door and a clear view of the service stairs.
Mateo used to tease her for choosing restaurant seats by their exits.
After his death, the habit had stopped being funny.
Her bedspread had been smoothed too perfectly.
The top drawer stood open by half an inch.
“Don’t touch anything,” she said.
Gabe drew his weapon.
Elena crossed to the framed photograph on her nightstand.
It had been turned facedown.
She used the edge of a clean hand towel to lift it.
The photograph showed Mateo laughing beside Lake Michigan, his hair blown sideways by the wind. Someone had drawn a black cross over his chest.
On the back, four words had been written in red ink.
HE OPENED THE WRONG ACCOUNT.
Elena’s knees weakened, but she locked them.
Declan appeared in the doorway behind Gabe.
He read the message without touching it.
“What account?”
Elena turned on him. “You tell me.”
“I have never seen that photograph.”
“But you knew his name downstairs.”
Declan’s silence answered before he did.
Gabe glanced between them. “Boss?”
Elena moved closer until only the overturned photograph separated her from Declan.
“You recognized Mateo. You recognized the cuff link. Stop pretending tonight is the first time my husband entered your life.”
Declan looked toward the open hallway, then shut the door.
“Mateo called me at 11:43 p.m. on October seventeenth,” he said.
Elena stopped breathing.
That was the night Mateo died.
“He said he had proof that someone was stealing from Cross Freight and killing anyone who noticed.”
Her fingernails cut into her palms.
“What did you do?”
Declan’s face became unreadable again.
“I told him where to meet me.”
“And then?”
“He never arrived.”
Elena heard the lie—not in his words, but in the fraction of a second before them.
She picked up the photograph.
The glass had cracked across Mateo’s smile. Elena remembered taking the picture on their tenth anniversary, when they had eaten grocery-store sandwiches beside the lake because the restaurant lost their reservation. Mateo had called it proof that happiness did not require anyone’s permission.
Whoever entered the room had not selected the photograph at random. They wanted grief to do what poison had failed to do: make her careless.
“You saw him that night.”
Declan said nothing.
That was answer enough.
