"Front Row for the Devil" Chapter 10 — Two Stages, One Lie
Chapter 10 — Two Stages, One Lie
At eight Thursday night, The Lantern appeared to host the signing ceremony for contract VC-204.
Priya streamed the stage, the city seal, and a table where officials waited beside an unsigned folder. Reporters filled the room. A banner thanked Voss Civic Strategies for protecting Chicago’s future.
The ceremony was fake.
The officials were cooperating witnesses and attorneys. The real signing had been postponed after Owen’s evidence reached the city inspector general. Voss did not know that. His calendar, cameras, and compromised accounts showed the event proceeding exactly as scheduled.
At 8:12, Natalie entered Warehouse Nine carrying a black case.
Her coat concealed a transmitter sewn into the lining, but the important device was ordinary: a phone broadcasting through a public account that Voss already knew. He would find it, disable it, and believe he had ended the stream. The distributed audio would begin only after that visible sacrifice.
Enzo waited outside the perimeter with detectives. He had argued against her going in until she reminded him that Voss expected her, not him.
“If I hear the safe word, I enter,” Enzo had said.
“If the signal drops for thirty seconds, you enter. If you hear the safe word, it means he is listening for one.”
Enzo had stared at her, then nodded. “Your plan.”
“My plan.”
Enzo had handed her a small ceramic blade for the ropes and a button transmitter for the door. Natalie returned the blade.
“If he searches me, that becomes his weapon.”
She kept the button because she had chosen it.
The warehouse smelled of river water, rust, and burned insulation.
Marcus sat where the video had shown him. One wrist was tied loosely. Natalie noticed the looseness and knew Voss wanted him capable of signing.
Julian Voss stepped from behind a concrete column.
No navy suit tonight. Dark coat, gloves, no visible weapon.
“You made this unnecessarily public,” he said.
“I’m a comedian. Public is the business model.”
“The box.”
Natalie set the case on a metal table but kept one hand on it.
Voss searched her visible phone, ended its broadcast, and crushed it beneath his shoe.
“There,” he said. “No audience.”
Natalie looked at the dark screen. “That must be comforting for you.”
“First Marcus.”
Voss smiled. “You still believe transactions require trust.”
“No. I believe they require leverage.”
At The Lantern, Priya played the false ceremony through Voss’s monitoring channel. The audience applauded as an official lifted a pen.
Voss glanced at his tablet.
For half a second, his attention belonged to the other stage.
Natalie touched her earpiece as if disabling it. In reality, the gesture transferred transmission to dozens of audience phones at The Lantern. Each carried a fragment of her warehouse audio. No single connection exposed the whole stream.
“Why Owen?” she asked.
“Because he confused records with truth.”
“And Rachel?”
“She confused truth with protection.”

Marcus shut his eyes.
Natalie kept her voice steady. “You killed both of them?”
Voss laughed softly. “I created a version of events the city could live with. People did the rest.”
“That is not an answer.”
“It is the only answer that matters. I do not need perfect evidence. I need the first believable story. By the time anyone corrects it, careers are over, witnesses are discredited, and contracts are signed.”
At The Lantern, his words emerged from audience phones a phrase at a time.
Priya assembled them into a synchronized feed.
Reporters heard the exchange without seeing the warehouse. Detectives heard it through a separate monitored channel. The imperfect fragments mattered because they arrived from independent devices whose owners could later verify them.
Voss’s tablet chimed. He looked down and saw that the signing had paused.
His expression sharpened.
“Open the case.”
Natalie did.
Inside sat a duplicate storage shell and Owen’s copied audio drive. The real Madison box was already in official custody.
Voss turned to Marcus. “Purge it.”
A laptop rested near Marcus’s chair. His freed hand moved to the keyboard.
“Use the command I gave you.”
Marcus typed the rhythm Natalie had taught him through gestures at The Lantern: three short inputs, one long, eight-second delay.
Voss watched the progress bar.
Natalie watched Marcus.
At ninety percent, the laptop locked itself and transmitted the attempted deletion to Priya’s mirror.
Voss struck Marcus across the face.
Marcus fell sideways with the chair. The loosened rope slipped over one wrist. He did not run. Instead, he reached beneath the laptop cart and pulled the network cable, forcing the attempted purge to remain logged locally.
It was the first brave thing Natalie had seen him do without being cornered into it.
The warehouse lights died.
A small incendiary device ignited near the server cabinet. Flames climbed the cable insulation.
The signal dropped.
Enzo and the detectives entered.
Voss disappeared through the smoke while his hired guards scattered toward the river exit. Enzo reached Natalie first, but she pointed past him.
“The cabinet.”
“It’s burning.”
“Rachel and Owen are in it.”
Smoke rolled across the ceiling. Enzo caught her wrist.
“Ten seconds. Then we leave, with or without the trays.”
He was not ordering her away. He was telling her the cost he would share.
“Ten,” she agreed.
Enzo stripped off his coat, wrapped it around her hands, and helped her pull two metal drive trays from the lower rack. A detective dragged Marcus away from the fire.
Voss reached a service vehicle and escaped before the perimeter closed.
The escape was not luck. One responding patrol car had been redirected by a false dispatch notice issued through a legacy Voss emergency account. But the account remained active only because the contract migration had not been completed. His last advantage created one more record against him.
He had one destination left.
The Lantern contained what he believed was the master server controlling the contract migration. In fact, Priya had built a read-only decoy using the login page recovered from the Madison system.
At 8:46, Voss entered the club through the kitchen with Caleb Rusk’s administrator credential.
He passed the fake ceremony table and the unsigned contract. For the first time, he understood that no city official had been waiting to save his company. The only asset left was the master server he believed could erase the history before police reached it.
The staged signing room was empty. Cameras appeared dark. The decoy console glowed in the control booth.
Voss climbed onto Natalie’s stage to reach it.
He entered his master password.
Every camera in The Lantern turned toward him.
