"Front Row for the Devil" Chapter 8 — Eight Minutes on Madison Street
Chapter 8 — Eight Minutes on Madison Street
Enzo left The Lantern in the back of a police vehicle.
Natalie watched through the front windows until the car disappeared, then turned back to the stage. Voss had been detained for questioning, not arrested. His attorney stood beside him in the lobby, already describing the certificate as compromised.
The countdown continued.
06:43.
The detective supervising the club ordered everyone away from the projection equipment. Priya kept her hands visible while narrating each command she entered. An attorney filmed her screen and the clock beside it.
Natalie wanted speed. The law wanted a clean chain of custody. For once, she understood that the slower thing could be the more dangerous weapon.
“Can Luca stop it?” Natalie asked.
Priya shook her head from the booth. “The room uses biometric access. He can document the technicians, but if he forces entry, Voss calls it a Caruso attack and the data becomes contaminated.”
“Then we stop it from here.”
Natalie told the audience to upload their recordings before leaving. She gave them the attorney’s public evidence address and asked them to keep original files.
“Do not crop them. Do not add music. For once in human history, the vertical video needs less editing.”
The room produced one nervous laugh.
Priya opened the connection logs. Every correction packet contained a short audio checksum.
“Why audio?” Natalie asked.
“The Lantern system verifies live events by comparing audience sound. It prevents someone from replacing our feed with a prerecorded show.”
Natalie looked at the four old clips still displayed on a side monitor.
Each planted interaction occurred near a half-hour mark. Each was followed by a predictable wave of laughter. Marcus had not only delivered a person and a timestamp. He had delivered a repeatable sound pattern.
“The purge isn’t waiting for a number,” she said. “It’s waiting for a laugh.”
Priya stared at her, then pulled up the old waveforms.
The peaks aligned.
Priya pulled up the system manual left by Voss’s production vendor. The validation feature was marketed as anti-piracy protection: a live venue could certify that sound and image belonged to the same event. Hidden beneath the ordinary settings was a privileged deletion rule using the same signature.
“They turned the audience into a password,” Natalie said.
“And you are the only person here who can make the password stop sounding predictable.”
Three bursts. Pause. One longer burst. Applause.
“It’s an acoustic key,” Priya said. “The room microphones listen for the signature before accepting a destructive command.”
05:11.
Natalie took the microphone.
“Everybody still here, I need the worst laugh you have.”
People looked at one another.
“Not your real laugh. Give me the noise you make when your boss explains cryptocurrency.”
The response was ugly and uneven.
“Again. Three short bursts.”
She conducted the audience like an orchestra assembled during a nervous breakdown. Priya sampled the noise, inverted part of the waveform, and injected it into the validation channel.

The countdown froze at 03:26.
Then it restarted.
“It rejected the mismatch,” Priya said.
“Good. Make it reject everything.”
Natalie kept changing the rhythm. Short laugh. Long cheer. Silence. Applause in the wrong place. Every new waveform forced the remote system to compare a live pattern it had never cataloged.
At Madison Street, the storage-room lock flashed amber.
The detective with Luca received emergency authorization from the facility manager. The door opened.
The Voss technicians stepped away from the rack. One tried to pull a drive. Luca filmed while the detective stopped him.
00:19.
Priya flooded the channel with every audience sample at once.
The timer reached zero.
PURGE FAILED: LIVE EVENT UNVERIFIED.
The remaining audience erupted in a real laugh unlike any of the samples.
Inside the rack, investigators found a hardened storage box. It held transaction hashes, customer indexes, and a single encrypted audio file labeled PRICE_O_11-43.
It did not contain a readable client list. Voss had divided knowledge across systems so no stolen drive could expose him alone.
But Owen Price had left something behind.
The Voss technicians claimed they had entered to prevent a cyberattack. One carried a printed work order created six minutes after Natalie displayed the certificate command. The other had the removed authentication module from The Lantern in his bag.
Neither fact proved murder. Together, they destroyed the claim that Voss’s systems had no connection to the club.
By midnight, Priya had copied the file under the supervision of an attorney and a detective. The password was not in the storage box. Natalie found it in Owen’s public contract notes: a repeated phrase written beside three Voss invoices.
Public memory is not proof.
The audio opened.
Owen’s voice was strained and close to the microphone.
“If this file is playing, Voss knows I traced the Quinn record. Rachel Quinn did not die where the report says. Her phone was placed at the lakefront while she was still inside a Voss-controlled camera corridor on Madison.”
Natalie forgot the room.
Rachel Quinn had been the first comedian to put her on a real stage. She had taught Natalie to wait through silence instead of begging an audience to like her. Five years earlier, Rachel had left comedy to investigate city contracting. Six months later, police had ruled her death a suicide.
The recording continued.
“Voss built the system for clients who needed to appear somewhere harmless. Then he learned the same system could make a victim appear somewhere alone. Hayes’s club footage is only the public layer. The original camera maps are tied to contract renewal file VC-204.”
The audio ended.
Outside, Julian Voss spoke to reporters after leaving police questioning with his lawyer.
“Tonight, an organized-crime figure attacked municipal infrastructure,” he said. “Ms. Hayes has been manipulated by a man with a documented history of violence. I hope she realizes that before more people are hurt.”
The headline appeared within minutes.
COMEDIAN OR CARUSO ACCOMPLICE?
Natalie did not answer it.
Her phone filled with demands that she denounce Enzo or admit she was sleeping with him. She muted the notifications.
“Your reputation is burning,” Priya said quietly.
“Owen’s is buried, and Rachel’s was rewritten. Mine can wait until morning.”
That choice cost her another sponsor before the recording finished. Natalie watched the cancellation arrive and did not change course.
She replayed Owen’s recording.
Priya touched the screen where the old file name appeared.
“Did you know Rachel?”
Natalie closed her eyes.
“She taught me how not to be afraid of a quiet room.”
Now Rachel’s silence had a timestamp.
