"Front Row for the Devil" Chapter 7 — Don’t Stop the Camera
Chapter 7 — Don’t Stop the Camera
Julian Voss reached the balcony exit.
The projection screen went black.
“Cut the stream,” a man shouted from the box.
“Don’t touch it,” Natalie said.
Priya froze the authenticated command on every monitor she still controlled. Natalie faced the audience.
“Phones up. Record the screen, the balcony, and me. Send your video to someone before anyone asks you to delete it.”
Hundreds of devices rose.
The livestream indicator vanished from the stage monitor, then returned as Priya shifted to the independent feed. The command remained visible.
CORRECTION: PRICE WAS ALIVE AT 11:43.
Voss stopped at the exit because every lens in the room had followed him.
“Priya, tell them what they’re seeing,” Natalie said.
Priya routed her voice through the speakers. “The certificate is a digital credential issued to Voss Civic Strategies. It does not prove who touched the keyboard, but it proves the command came through a system authorized to act as that company. I have preserved the full chain, not a screenshot.”
“Can you fake it?” a reporter shouted.
“Given enough time, perhaps. Not while it is still being verified by three independent receivers that logged the same command.”
The reporter raised his phone higher.
Beside the stage, Enzo slowly removed his coat. He placed it on a chair, then set his holstered gun on top of it and stepped away with his hands visible.
“My attorney is outside,” he told the detective. “I will come with you. You will not clear this room or seize those cameras without preserving what is on them.”
The detective looked at the wall, then at the audience transmitting it beyond anyone’s control.
“Nobody leaves through the rear,” he ordered another officer.
Enzo’s attorney pushed through the front entrance and presented herself to the detective. Enzo did not ask her to stop the questioning. He asked her to ensure that the coat, weapon, and phone he had surrendered were inventoried on camera.
Natalie caught his gaze from the stage.
He had spent years treating records as obstacles to route around. Tonight he was demanding one be made.
Natalie had her answer. The confrontation had begun, and the cameras were still running.
Voss returned to the balcony rail.
“My company’s certificate was stolen,” he said. His voice reached the room through a reporter’s microphone. “Ms. Hayes has admitted she manipulated the clocks. This is theater, not evidence.”
“Correct,” Natalie said. “This is theater. Evidence is what survives after the lights come up.”
Priya projected the seating manifest. Natalie showed the refund, the false artist request, and the instruction requiring Enzo to be visible.
Then came Caleb Rusk’s obituary beside the badge log recorded three months after his death.
Finally, four old performance clips appeared at once, each stopping within seconds of a half-hour mark.
“Same club,” Natalie said. “Same production vendor. Four people who later used my supposedly spontaneous jokes to prove where they were.”

She brought up the proxy angle of the blond heckler touching his ear.
“This is what the viral clip removed. He receives a cue. A man at the sound booth answers. Then the words Warehouse Nine enter my show before Owen Price’s death was public.”
She did not say the footage convicted Voss. She said exactly what it showed. The distinction mattered now.
Voss leaned on the rail. “All managed through Marcus Bell’s account.”
The audience shifted.
“Mr. Bell sold access to your schedule,” Voss continued. “He altered seating and accepted payments. My company discovered the irregularities tonight. That is why our security system issued corrections.”
The side door opened.
Marcus entered with his attorney.
Natalie felt the room tighten around him.
He walked onto the stage, pale beneath the lights.
“Did Voss Civic Strategies instruct you to place Enzo Caruso in the center seat?” Natalie asked.
Marcus looked toward the right-side exit.
“No.”
The answer struck harder than she expected.
“Did Julian Voss order the Warehouse Nine interruption?”
Marcus looked right again.
“No. I acted alone.”
Voss did not smile, but relief softened the corners of his mouth.
“Mr. Bell has already retained counsel,” Voss said. “I suggest everyone ask why a guilty man suddenly arrived with a story designed to save himself.”
“We should ask,” Natalie replied. “Guilty people can still tell the truth. Innocent-looking people can still buy it.”
Natalie watched Marcus instead.
The first time he lied, he had glanced at the door. The second time, he had looked at it before she finished the question.
Someone stood beyond it, where Marcus could see and the cameras could not.
Natalie changed the rhythm.
“Fine. No more testimony. We’re doing crowd work.”
Marcus blinked.
“You don’t speak. You only move. One step left means yes. One step right means no.”
His attorney began to object. Natalie raised a hand.
“He can stop whenever he wants.”
Marcus stayed.
“Is Sophie still at the location arranged Tuesday afternoon?”
He did not move.
His eyes went to the exit.
Natalie understood. The photograph on his phone had not been proof of a new breach. It had been a threat that Voss could expose the address and blame Marcus for losing control.
She softened her voice.
“One finger means the threat is here. Two means it is somewhere else.”
Marcus lowered one hand beside his leg.
One finger.
Police moved toward the right-side exit. A man in an event-staff jacket ran. Officers caught him in the lobby with a phone showing the secured building and a draft message addressed to Marcus.
The message read: CHANGE YOUR ANSWERS OR HER ADDRESS GOES PUBLIC.
An officer photographed the screen before touching anything else. Marcus’s attorney requested the phone be sealed and its network activity preserved.
Marcus exhaled.
Natalie continued.
“Did Voss use your account?”
One step left.
“Is he trying to erase something tonight?”
Left.
“At Madison Street?”
Left.
Marcus lifted both hands and held up eight fingers.
Priya’s earpiece crackled.
“Natalie, Luca is at the relay facility. He sees two Voss technicians entering a restricted storage room.”
Voss raised his voice. “My employees maintain that facility. Their presence proves nothing.”
“Then they’ll have no reason to delete anything,” Natalie said.
For the first time, anger broke through his public smile.
Enzo was being led toward the front doors. He stopped when Natalie called his name.
She held up eight fingers.
He nodded once and spoke to the detective beside him. The detective listened, then reached for his radio instead of forcing him forward.
Priya brought Luca’s phone feed onto the screen.
A countdown glowed on a rack inside the Madison Street facility.
07:59.
07:58.
REMOTE PURGE ARMED.
