"Front Row for the Devil" Chapter 4 — A Dead Man’s Badge
Chapter 4 — A Dead Man’s Badge
The backstage door clicked shut again.
Natalie stood in the middle of The Lantern with Enzo’s black phone in one hand and her own in the other.
Priya’s voice came through the speaker. “I’m in the control booth. That door is twenty feet from me.”
“Lock yourself in.”
“Already done.”
Natalie called Enzo.
He answered before the first ring finished. “Where are you?”
“Main room. Someone used Caleb Rusk’s badge.”
“Do not go backstage.”
She picked up the heavy flashlight beneath the bar.
“You’re welcome to arrive before I make a bad decision.”
“Natalie.”
A metal cart rattled behind the curtain.
She ended the call.
The smart choice was to wait. Natalie knew this because every nerve in her body objected when she moved toward the stage.
She climbed the steps and crossed behind the curtain. The corridor was empty. A storage-room door swung slowly near the loading area.
On the floor lay a black equipment case no larger than a shoebox.
Its cable had been cut.
The rear exit opened. A figure in a maintenance jacket disappeared into the alley.
Natalie raised her phone and captured three blurred photographs before a dark SUV blocked the far end of the alley. Luca jumped out. The intruder vanished through a pedestrian gate toward Illinois Street.
Enzo arrived less than a minute later.
He looked at Natalie, the flashlight, and the open door.
“You went backstage.”
“I made it almost twelve seconds before disappointing you.”
He took a breath through his nose. “Are you hurt?”
“No.”
Only then did his shoulders loosen.
“Show me what you saw,” he said.
Natalie replayed the photographs. In the second image, the intruder’s left boot was planted at an awkward angle. In the third, he favored the same leg while running.
“He limps. Left side.”
Enzo enlarged the maintenance patch. “He wanted you to see the uniform. A real city employee would remove an identifying jacket before entering with a stolen credential.”
“So Madison Street is either a trail or a trap.”
“Both can lead somewhere useful.”
“That may be the most gangster sentence ever spoken in a comedy club.”
Priya emerged from the booth and examined the severed cable. “This was our remote encoding bridge. It forwarded the livestream to the cloud vendor.”
“Why steal the box after wiping the server?” Natalie asked.
Priya turned it over. A rectangular patch of clean plastic showed where a drive module had been removed.
“Because the bridge stored authentication records. Whoever took the module took the list of outside systems that had connected to us.”
Luca returned carrying a half-burned plastic badge in an evidence bag from his vehicle.
“He dropped this near the gate.”
Caleb Rusk’s photograph had melted into a pale oval. The magnetic strip remained intact.
Enzo studied the blurred images on Natalie’s phone. “The jacket has a Madison Municipal Parking patch.”

Priya enlarged the third photograph. A yellow stencil appeared on the back of the stolen drive case.
M-17.
“Madison Street,” Natalie said.
The phrase from the second heckler had never been a story. It was a destination.
Forty minutes later, Natalie stood across from a concrete parking structure on Madison Street while Luca checked its public access points.
Enzo had argued for sending Luca alone. Natalie had argued that she was the only person who had seen the thief move. They compromised in the way people compromised with Enzo Caruso: Luca entered first, Enzo stayed beside her, and nobody pretended he liked it.
Level four contained a row of locked municipal maintenance cages. Cage M-17 stood open.
Inside, they found an empty equipment cradle, two burned access cards, and a cracked radio handset. One card still carried part of Caleb Rusk’s name.
Natalie crouched near the radio without touching it.
“This wasn’t abandoned long ago.”
“How can you tell?” Enzo asked.
“The melted plastic still smells sweet.”
An automated voice rolled through the garage speakers.
“Attention. Vehicle assistance requested on level four.”
The words echoed twice.
Enzo looked toward the ramp.
An engine screamed.
A black sedan shot around the concrete pillar, accelerating directly at Natalie.
Enzo struck her sideways. They hit the ground behind a support column as the sedan clipped a steel cart and sent it spinning into the cage.
The car reversed.
Luca drew his weapon, but pedestrians were visible beyond the open side of the structure. He held fire.
The sedan tore down the ramp.
Natalie pushed herself upright. Enzo remained on one knee, his right arm held too close to his body.
“Your shoulder.”
“Bruised.”
“That is a mob-boss word for injured.”
“It is a word for bruised.”
The garage speaker chimed again.
“Exit route clear.”
Natalie froze.
The announcement had not come from the driver. It had come from the building.
She looked at the cracked radio and remembered the delayed echo before the car appeared.
“The driver was being directed,” she said. “Someone watched the cameras and spoke through the garage system. The first announcement placed us. The second told him the ramp was clear.”
Luca checked the handset. “This frequency belongs to the parking control room.”
“Which company services it?” Natalie asked.
He already knew the answer.
“Voss Civic Strategies.”
Sirens approached from below. Enzo’s expression changed as he read a message on Luca’s phone.
“What?” Natalie asked.
Luca answered. “Police recovered a handgun near Warehouse Nine. It is registered to a property company once controlled by Caruso Freight.”
“Ballistics?”
“Preliminary report says it may match.”
Natalie stared at Enzo. “Did you own it?”
“The company owned many weapons for warehouse security.”
“That was not my question.”
“I authorized them.”
He did not soften it.
The first officers reached level four. Natalie stepped away from the cage, raised her empty hands, and identified herself before Enzo could speak for her. She described the attack, pointed out the public-address announcements, and emailed the photographs directly from her phone.

When an officer asked why she had come with Enzo Caruso, Natalie said, “A dead employee used his badge inside my workplace, and the stolen device was marked M-17. Judge my company after you preserve the control-room logs.”
The officer looked toward Enzo.
“She answered you,” Enzo said.
He never asked Natalie to omit the gun, its old ownership, or his history with Voss.
“I took freight territory from men who did not surrender it politely. I paid Voss to show me where inspectors and patrols would be. Those are facts. He does not need to invent an innocent man. He only needs to fit a false murder between real crimes.”
The honesty landed like cold weight.
Natalie photographed the burned badge inside the cage.
“Then we make somebody nervous enough to admit which part is false.”
The officers photographed the cage and took custody of the burned cards and radio. Natalie recorded the names and badge numbers of everyone who handled them. If evidence could be rewritten, she wanted a human chain beside the digital one.
That evening she posted a forty-second video from her apartment.
“Today I met a dead employee with terrible customer service. He dropped half a badge, stole a box, and nearly turned me into garage décor. If anyone has the complete Caleb Rusk collectible, message me. Serious buyers only. No lowball offers from municipal contractors.”
She attached the photograph with the credential number partly visible.
Messages arrived for hours.
At 9:12 p.m., one contained the missing half of the badge.
Natalie recognized the hand holding it: square watch, bitten thumbnail, pale scar across the index finger.
Marcus had cut that finger opening a champagne bottle after her first sold-out show.
His next message contained an address.
Come alone if you want the truth.
She replied before calling Enzo.
Start talking.
Marcus’s answer appeared immediately.
I didn’t build their alibis, Nat.
Three dots pulsed.
I chose the people the audience would believe.
