"Front Row for the Devil" Chapter 2 — The Joke They Turned Into an Order
Chapter 2 — The Joke They Turned Into an Order
Natalie reached for her own phone.
"I'm calling the police."
Enzo caught neither her hand nor the device. He simply said, "Wait until midnight."
"That is exactly what a criminal says before recommending a second location."
"At midnight, someone will explain why I was placed in that seat."
"Someone you know?"
"Someone who wants the city awake when the story breaks."
Marcus shut the dressing-room door and lowered his voice. "How certain are you?"
Enzo looked at the seating note. "Certain enough that whoever entered this expected the footage to matter before morning."
Natalie called the police anyway.
She reported the falsified ticket record and the two suspicious interruptions. The desk officer gave her an incident number, advised Marcus to preserve the digital logs, and said someone might contact them.
Might.
At 12:07 a.m., every phone in the room lit up.
BREAKING: CITY AUDITOR FOUND DEAD AT ABANDONED RIVER WAREHOUSE.
The victim was Owen Price, forty-two, a senior contract auditor who had recently requested records connected to municipal security vendors. His body had been discovered inside Warehouse Nine shortly before eleven.
Marcus sat down hard.
Natalie read the first article twice.
"That man shouted the name before the body was public."
"Yes," Enzo said.
At 12:19, the video appeared.
It began with the blond man calling, "Ask him about Warehouse Nine."
The clip cut to Enzo's face.
His eyes narrowed. His chin moved once.
Then the woman shouted about Madison Street. Another cut showed Enzo glancing toward the camera. A caption filled the bottom of the screen.
CHICAGO MOB BOSS REACTS TO CODED MESSAGES MINUTES BEFORE AUDITOR'S DEATH.
The clip ended before Natalie's joke about dating profiles. It excluded the heckler's theatrical grin, his hand rising to his right ear, and every moment that made the interruption look staged.
By 12:25, three accounts had reposted it.
By 12:31, a local crime blogger claimed Warehouse Nine was historically connected to Caruso freight operations.
By 12:38, #CarusoOrder was trending in Chicago.
Natalie set her phone on the table as if it had become contaminated.
"They turned my joke into an order."
Enzo watched the clip without expression. "That was the purpose of the seat."
Marcus rubbed both hands over his face. "The full recording clears this up."
"Get it," Natalie said.
He went to the control booth. Natalie followed, with Enzo and his bodyguard behind them.
The Lantern looked obscene when empty. Chairs faced the stage like rows of teeth. Half-finished drinks sweated onto tables while blue cleaning lights flattened every shadow.
Priya Shah, the club's audiovisual supervisor, had already gone home. Marcus logged into the production console using his administrator credentials.
Friday's show appeared as a single exported file.
No isolated camera tracks. No separate audience audio. No edit history.
"Where is the raw footage?" Natalie asked.
Marcus clicked through folders. "The system archives the program feed."
"It has four cameras."
"The switcher chooses which one goes to the feed."
"And magically forgets the other three?"
"Storage costs money."
Natalie leaned over him. "So does lying to me. Open the access logs."
Marcus hesitated.
It lasted less than a second, but she knew his timing better than anyone's. Marcus had managed her for four years. He paused before bad news, not before technical confusion.
"Open them."
He did.
The log showed an external session at 11:54 p.m., twenty minutes before the edited clip appeared. The user had accessed the exported program feed and the ticket manifest.
The device name was a string of letters and numbers.
"Can you identify it?" Enzo asked.
"Not from here," Marcus said.
"Priya can," Natalie replied.
Marcus closed the window too quickly.
Natalie opened it again.
"Nobody touches this system until she arrives."
Enzo's bodyguard stepped to the rear exit and spoke quietly into his phone.
Natalie turned. "What is he doing?"
"Making sure the person outside in a gray sedan does not enter," Enzo said.
Her pulse kicked. "There's someone outside?"
"There has been for nine minutes."
"You waited nine minutes to mention it?"
"I was determining whether he was watching me or you."
"And?"
"He photographed you when you crossed the room."
The anger arrived before the fear.
"I'm not going into hiding."
"I did not ask you to."
"Your face is about to be attached to a murder. Don't tell me you came without a fortress prepared."
"I have a secure apartment three blocks from here. You may use it, refuse it, or inspect it and leave. Luca can place people outside your own building instead. Your decision."
The bodyguard—Luca, apparently—kept his attention on the exit.
Natalie studied Enzo. Men with less power had tried to control her with concern. They called it protection when they meant obedience.
Enzo waited without moving closer.
"People outside my building," she said. "Not inside. Nobody follows me into the bathroom, chooses what I wear, or confiscates my phone."
"Agreed."
"And I see anything you find about the club."
"If it does not expose someone unrelated to this."
"That sounded dangerously like a condition."
"It was a boundary. You are allowed to have yours. So am I."
She hated that she respected the answer.
Natalie looked again at the viral clip. The edit was good, but it was not perfect.
She dragged the playhead backward. At the end of the first interruption, the image jumped from Enzo to a wide shot. The audience laughter changed too sharply.
"They removed twenty-seven seconds," she said.
Marcus frowned. "How do you know?"
"Because I asked the anniversary couple about their air fryer immediately afterward. The wife said 'Ninja,' I made a joke about marital propaganda, and the applause peaked before I crossed to stage right. Twenty-seven seconds. Maybe twenty-eight."
She opened her social accounts.
Marcus stood. "What are you doing?"
"Finding out who cares about the missing time."
She typed:
Apparently I issued a mob order between jokes last night. For accuracy: the Warehouse Nine interruption happened at 10:41, right before I destroyed a marriage over an air fryer. Full clip coming soon.
It was a lie. The interruption had happened at 10:38 and fourteen seconds. Natalie remembered because the small confidence monitor at the stage edge had shown the time when she stepped around it.
"You just promised footage we may not have," Marcus said.
"People forgive comedians for lying. It's in the job description."
She posted it.
Enzo looked at her with a faint shift in his expression. Approval, perhaps. Or concern with better tailoring.
"You expect a correction," he said.
"The person who edited this cares about timestamps. People like that would rather confess to murder than let someone be wrong on the internet."
They waited.
Responses flooded in—jokes, threats, accusations, marriage proposals of questionable sincerity.
Eighty-seven seconds after Natalie's post, an account created that month replied.
Wrong again. Warehouse call at 22:38:14. Air-fryer segment began at 22:38:41. Maybe don't accuse people when you can't read a clock.
Natalie's mouth went dry.
The account had supplied the exact second and the length of the missing gap.
Marcus whispered, "That could be anyone."
"No," Natalie said. "It could be someone who watched the uncut control feed."
Enzo was already working through a second phone. Within minutes, a contact sent him the account's cached registration data from before its privacy settings changed.
The recovery address was mostly concealed.
••••••@vosscivic.com.
Natalie read the domain aloud.
"Voss Civic Strategies."
For the first time that night, Enzo looked surprised.
"You know them," she said.
"Everyone who has done business with the city knows them."
Outside, the gray sedan pulled away from the curb.
On Natalie's phone, the anonymous reply disappeared.
