"THE CHAIR THAT CAME DOWN 69 FLOORS" Chapter 1 — The Blue and Yellow Chair
The chair does not look large enough to carry the weight of its history.
Its frame is blue. Its seat and back support are yellow. Small wheels sit near the front, while dark tracks run along the rear like the treads of a compact sled.
The straps are visible. So are the handles that other people would have to grip. Nothing about the object hides its dependence on a team. It was made to carry a passenger, but it could go nowhere until someone unfolded it, secured the person inside, and controlled it on the stairs.
Today, it belongs to the collection of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York. The Museum identifies it as the EVAC+CHAIR that carried John Abruzzo to safety on September 11, 2001.
It is not a fire engine, a steel column, or a piece of an airplane. It is an emergency chair—light enough to hang folded against a wall and simple enough to be overlooked during an ordinary workday.
But on one extraordinary morning, that chair became the only practical way down.
John Abruzzo worked for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey as an accountant. He was a quadriplegic and used a customized power wheelchair. His office was on the 69th floor of the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
At 8:46 a.m., American Airlines Flight 11 struck the building high above him.
The impact did not destroy the 69th floor, but it transformed everything around it. Abruzzo later said the tower felt as though it had been punched. Papers drifted outside his north-facing windows. The enormous structure moved.
Most workers did what people in a damaged skyscraper are trained to do: they headed for the stairs.
For Abruzzo, the stairs were not an exit.
His power wheelchair had been built to give him mobility through offices, streets, and daily life. It could not carry him down 69 flights in a darkening tower where elevators could not be trusted.
The people around him faced a choice that was both immediate and deeply human. They could join the evacuation while the stairwells were still passable. Or they could remain with a coworker whose way out depended on them.
Ten stayed.
Their names were Michael Ambrosio, Peter Bitwinski, Philip Caffrey, Richard Capriotti, Michael Curci, Michael Fabiano, Wilson Pacheco, Anthony Pecora, Gerald Simpkins, and Peggy Zoch.
They were not a specialized rescue squad. They were Port Authority employees who knew Abruzzo from years of working beside him.
One of them retrieved the folded evacuation chair. The group transferred Abruzzo out of the expensive power wheelchair he had arrived in that morning. That chair would remain behind on the 69th floor.
The blue and yellow chair was designed to slide down stairs on its tracks. In demonstrations, it could be handled by one trained person under controlled conditions.
Nothing about the North Tower was controlled that morning.
Abruzzo was a large man. The stairways were narrow. Landings required the rescuers to turn the chair, reposition their hands, and begin again. Several people would have to work at once while others rotated in to relieve them.
There was another fact none of them could yet measure: how much time the building had left.
Years later, the chair would sit under museum lights. Visitors could study its wheels, straps, handles, and tracks. They could stand safely beside the object and understand what it was designed to do.
The official Museum photograph removes the chair from the catastrophe and records it almost clinically against a plain background. That makes the object easier to see, but it also creates the central question of the story: how did this narrow frame travel from an office nearly 700 feet above the ground to a sidewalk below a burning tower?
On September 11, its purpose was not theoretical.
It was a route through 69 floors of concrete stairs.
It was the difference between waiting and moving.
For the ten coworkers, it also changed the nature of their own evacuation. They could no longer move as ten individuals choosing the fastest route. They became one unit organized around a chair. Their speed would be the chair’s speed. Their pauses would be shared. If one handler lost strength, another would have to take the position.
And it had been placed in the building because John Abruzzo had already survived one disaster there.
The first escape had revealed what could happen when a high-rise emergency plan ended at the top of the stairs for a wheelchair user. The second would test whether the lesson had truly been learned.
