"The Girl Who Gave the Devil a Flower" Chapter 8 Forty-Eight Hours
Chapter 8
Forty-Eight Hours
The location tag had stopped moving, but Mara still had one use for it.
At dawn, Martin ordered a guard to remove trash from the warehouse. Mara waited until the man opened the cold-room door, then whispered to Lucy.
"Do you remember feeding the mailbox?"
It was another game. Lucy slipped her hand inside her coat, found the loose seam Mara had shown her, and pushed the tag into Mara's palm.
Mara waited until the guard turned.
Then she dropped it into a bag filled with plastic wrap and spoiled packing material.
The bag left the building.
Mara watched Martin through the cracked cold-room door. He carried two phones: a black one for the guards and a silver one he never let anyone touch. Every call from Gideon came through the silver phone.
A security camera pointed toward the loading floor. Its indicator was dark, but the cable disappeared through the wall.
"The camera," Mara whispered to Lucy. "Remember it."
"Black eye above the door," Lucy whispered back.
Mara did not know whether it recorded locally or remotely. Either possibility could become evidence if they survived.
Twenty minutes later, Caleb's map came alive.
"Signal moving north," he said.
Adrian studied the route. "Too easy."
"It may be Mara sending it out."
"Exactly. Follow the truck without stopping it. Find where it began its route."
Traffic cameras identified a waste contractor. Its morning truck had serviced six industrial properties, including two refrigerated warehouses near the Calumet River.
One belonged to North Meridian Foods, a company with no employees, no imports, and a mailing address shared by a Rourke attorney.
The transit analyst called with another match. The two-note horn on Gideon's recording belonged to a Lake Central freight assigned to the Calumet spur. Track sensors placed it beside North Meridian at the exact minute of the call.
Ortiz still demanded visual confirmation.
Adrian agreed. He had spent too long commanding people to trust his instincts. This decision would survive scrutiny from someone who did not fear him.
Caleb marked it.
"We have a likely site."
"Likely gets them killed if we're wrong."
Adrian called Special Agent Lena Ortiz, a federal investigator who had spent seven years trying to prove the link between Rourke's legal businesses and port smuggling.
She answered with suspicion.
"If this is a favor request, hang up."
"It's evidence. Financial ledgers, shell companies, access records, and a recorded extortion demand."
"In exchange for what?"
"Nothing for me. Priority response for two hostages."
"You understand that whatever you hand me can be used against you."
"Yes."
"And you are still calling?"
Adrian looked at the matching swallow he had taken from his safe. Samuel had carved it when Adrian was seventeen. He had hidden it for years as if memory itself were a weakness.
"Send me a secure address," he said.
By noon, Ortiz had enough to obtain emergency surveillance authority, but not enough to storm a warehouse on an inference.

"We need proof they're inside," she said.
Caleb enlarged a rail map. The cold-storage building sat beside a freight line used by Lake Central cargo trains.
"If Mara can hear the engines, she may leave something."
Inside the warehouse, Mara had created a second opportunity.
She complained that the cold was making Lucy shake uncontrollably. When Martin ignored her, Mara kicked a drain valve until it cracked. Water spread beneath a refrigeration unit and triggered a pressure alarm.
Two guards rushed to shut down the compressor.
Martin dragged Mara's chair away from the leak.
"You think Vale is coming for you?"
"I think you're afraid he will."
"He'll trade every route he owns. Men like him only understand ownership."
"You don't understand him at all."
Martin leaned closer. "I understand what you cost."
Mara smiled through a split lip.
"Then why are you the one standing in the cold?"
His anger made him careless. He left the door partly open when Gideon's call came.
Mara heard the update clearly.
The meeting had moved from the following night to midnight.
Gideon believed federal agents had started circling one of his accounting firms. He wanted the transfer completed before the pressure reached the warehouse.
Twelve hours had vanished.
Mara shifted her chair closer to the wall while pretending to soothe Lucy. The loosened valve had left a trail of water toward the loading floor. With her shoe, she pushed the pallet nail into the stream. It turned end over end until a guard kicked it beneath the dark camera.
If agents reviewed the footage later, they would see where the tool had come from. It was a tiny chain of custody improvised on cold concrete.
Mara lowered her head to Lucy's.
"When the loud noises start, what do you do?"
"Get small. Cover my ears. Wait for Mommy."
"That's right."
At 4:30 p.m., a city utility camera captured Martin's face when he stepped outside to argue with a repair contractor. Ortiz had confirmation.
"We can act," she told Adrian. "But the warehouse has multiple exits and possible armed guards. We need time to stage."
Gideon's message arrived before she finished.
Midnight. Come alone. Bring the signed transfer. If I see police, the child goes into the river first.
Adrian forwarded it to Ortiz.
"You'll be wired," she said. "You do not improvise an assault. You keep him talking until the teams are in place."
"And if he moves Lucy?"
"Then you make the choice that keeps her alive."
The answer did not comfort him. It was not supposed to.
Caleb prepared the transfer documents. The company name on the signature page was almost correct—one letter changed, enough to invalidate the conveyance while appearing genuine under bad light.
"If Rourke's attorney reads this closely, he'll know," Caleb said.
"Then we make sure Gideon talks before his attorney arrives."
Adrian signed the false name.
Before leaving, he wrote a separate instruction transferring control of every legal Vale business to an independent board if he did not return. Mara's employment, June's coverage, and the employee fund could not be touched by his captains.
Caleb read it.
"You planned for everyone except yourself."
"Samuel did that once. I learned the wrong lesson."
Adrian placed his wooden swallow inside his jacket.
"Tonight I correct it."
At 11:56 p.m., the warehouse door rose just high enough for one man to enter.
Adrian stepped beneath it alone.
Outside, Ortiz divided the building into sectors. Her tactical commander made one rule explicit: Vale security would follow federal commands or withdraw.
"Agreed," Caleb said.
Saving Mara and Lucy mattered more than preserving the illusion that Adrian's people controlled every room they entered.
