"The Girl Who Gave the Devil a Flower" Chapter 6 What He Was Willing to Lose
Chapter 6
What He Was Willing to Lose
Evan Pike was alive.
Caleb found him twelve hours after the facial match, living under his middle name in a furnished apartment near Midway Airport. By the time security entered, Pike was gone.
The kitchen table held three burner phones, a Vale Freight payroll token, and a printed photograph of Mara pushing Lucy on a swing.
On the back, someone had written one sentence.
He finally has something to bury.
Adrian read it twice.
"Rourke wants me angry," he said.
"It's working," Caleb replied.
"That doesn't mean he gets to choose what I do with it."
They traced Pike's access to a payroll administrator who had reactivated two dead employees and routed small payments through dormant contractor accounts. The administrator disappeared before questioning.
Adrian froze every compromised credential, shut Gate Four, and quietly fed false shipping schedules into the breached system.
If Gideon wanted a route, Adrian would give him one that led nowhere.
Two senior captains came to his office before noon. Both demanded that Pike's relatives be taken until he surrendered.
"No families," Adrian said.
"Rourke is using yours," one captain replied.
"That is why we don't become him."
The older man laughed. "A waitress and her kid made you soft."
Adrian slid a ledger across the desk. It contained photographs of the captain's secret withdrawals from a contractor account.
"They made me look closely," Adrian said. "You confused that with softness."
He removed the captain from port operations without a threat or a raised voice. Caleb escorted both men out while Adrian transferred the legitimate crews onto protected payroll. Every controlled decision denied Gideon the chaotic war he was trying to provoke.
Mara refused to wait blindly.
Caleb installed a panic button in her apartment, but she also created her own safeguards. She shared live location with June, photographed every unfamiliar vehicle, and taught Lucy a game called Red Bird: if Mara said those words, Lucy had to hold her hand, stay silent, and follow without asking why.
"I don't like teaching her to be afraid," Adrian said.
"I'm teaching her what to do while she's afraid. There's a difference."
Mara sewed a coin-sized location tag into the lining of Lucy's yellow coat. She also replaced the wooden swallow's cord with one thin enough to break if caught.
"Samuel carved that," Adrian said.
"Which is why I won't let it become something anyone can use to pull her backward."
Three days passed without another message.
On the fourth afternoon, Mara left work and saw the gray SUV parked half a block away.
This time, she did not go home.
She entered a crowded public library, called Caleb, and photographed the SUV through the glass. When the vehicle moved toward the loading zone, she took Lucy out through the children's entrance and into a rideshare Caleb had verified.
The plate led to a rental account opened with one of Pike's dead identities.

Adrian met them at June's apartment.
"You're moving tonight," he said.
Mara removed Lucy's coat and handed the child to June.
"We agreed that I move when there is an immediate attack. The car watched us. It didn't approach."
"It followed you from your office to your daughter's school."
"And I saw it. I changed the route. I got her home."
"This is not a test you need to keep passing."
"Then stop talking to me as if failure is the only reason I get a vote."
They stood in the narrow living room, anger and fear pressed between them.
Adrian lowered his voice.
"If something happened to either of you, I don't know what would be left of me."
Mara's expression changed.
Not softened. Opened.
She stepped closer.
"Then don't turn me into another possession you're terrified of losing. Stand beside me and make a plan I can live with."
Adrian nodded once.
"We transfer all three of you to a hotel suite under Vale Kitchens, not my name. Female security inside the hallway. Your mother keeps tomorrow's appointment. Lucy stays with you. You see the route before we move."
"For how long?"
"Seventy-two hours. If Caleb cannot contain the breach by then, we decide again together."
"Together," she repeated.
"Together."
His phone vibrated.
Caleb had forwarded a photograph.
Lucy stood outside preschool that morning, her red clip bright against her dark curls. The image had been taken from less than twenty feet away.
A message followed.
Pretty little thing. Owen was careless too.
For one second, Adrian could not hear the room.
Gideon had named his brother.
He had also placed a camera within touching distance of Lucy.
Adrian showed Mara the screen.
She went pale, but she did not look away.
"We leave now," she said.
There was no triumph in being right.
Caleb sent two vehicles. One would collect June from the clinic entrance after her appointment records were transferred. The other would take Mara and Lucy through an underground garage to the hotel. Decoy cars would leave from both ends of the block.
Adrian made one more call.
His attorney answered on the first ring.
"Prepare a conditional transfer of the Calumet routes," Adrian said. "Put enough truth in it for Rourke to believe the rest."
"You are giving him the port?"
"I'm giving him bait."
"And if he takes it?"
Adrian looked at Mara packing Lucy's medicine and stuffed rabbit into a small bag.
"Then I lose the port."
It was the first time he had said the words without calculating how many men would die to prevent them.
Caleb called again. The transfer team was forty minutes away.
"Too long," Adrian said.
"It's the fastest clean team. You're fifteen minutes out. I want you off that block before they arrive. If Rourke sees you leave, he may think the apartment is no longer protected."
Adrian hated the logic because it was sound.
He turned to Mara.
"Lock the door behind me. Do not open it until Caleb gives you the names of all four agents."
"I know."
"Mara—"
She caught his hand.
"Go. Every minute you stand here arguing is a minute we're not moving."
He closed his fingers around hers once, then left.
Mara set the deadbolt and chain. She checked Lucy's location tag, then sent the active link to Caleb and June.
"Red Bird practice," she told Lucy.
Lucy reached for her hand at once.
"No talking. Stay close. Follow Mommy."
"Good girl."
Mara placed the wooden swallow around Lucy's neck and tucked it beneath her shirt.
At 8:43 p.m., every light in the apartment went out.
The refrigerator stopped humming. The hallway lamp vanished beneath the door. Even the neighbor's television died.
Mara's phone lost Wi-Fi, then cellular service.
Someone had cut more than the power.
Lucy squeezed her hand.
"Red Bird," Mara whispered.
She guided Lucy into the bathroom, lifted her into the empty tub, and pulled the shower curtain closed. Then Mara took the fire extinguisher from beneath the sink and positioned herself beside the door.
Metal scraped inside the front lock.
Once.
Twice.
The chain snapped.
Mara pressed the hidden button on Lucy's location tag.
Across the city, Caleb's screen flashed red.
The apartment door crashed open.
