"The Girl Who Gave the Devil a Flower" Chapter 5 The Flowers on Her Table
Chapter 5
The Flowers on Her Table
June came home nine days later.
Mara arranged her medications in a labeled box, scheduled follow-up appointments, and refused Adrian's offer of a private nurse. She accepted a visiting nurse covered by the hospital plan after reading every page of the authorization herself.
At work, she rebuilt the employee emergency process she had just been forced to use.
Requests no longer passed through restaurant managers. Forms were translated into Spanish and Polish. A worker could ask for help without explaining a miscarriage, an eviction, or a sick parent to the person writing the weekly schedule.
Within six weeks, Mara had helped twelve employees access benefits they had never known existed.
"Where has she been all our lives?" Denise asked Adrian.
"Working jobs that didn't deserve her."
He approved the department's budget and nothing else. Mara would have known if he touched her decisions.
Their lives began joining in quieter ways.
Sunday mornings belonged to the park. Lucy demanded the swings, then the ducks, then the swings again. Adrian learned to push her high enough to make her laugh but not high enough to make Mara glare.
Wednesday dinners happened in Mara's kitchen.
Adrian learned that Lucy would eat toast only in triangles. He learned that her stuffed rabbit required its own chair and that Mara used too much garlic whenever she was worried.
One evening, Lucy announced that a dinosaur named Kevin lived in the hall closet and feared vacuum cleaners.
Adrian laughed so suddenly that he had to set down his fork.
Mara watched him from the stove.
"I didn't know you could do that."
"Neither did I."
Later, after Lucy fell asleep, Mara carried tea onto the narrow balcony. Strings of secondhand yellow lights glowed above pots of basil and mint.
"Caleb's people are still outside," she said.
"Yes."
"Lucy asked if the man in the blue cap lives in his car."
"I'll rotate him."
"That's not the point. She notices everything. I won't let protection become another word for control."
Adrian set down his cup.
"Tell me the line."
"No one enters our home without permission. No one changes her school route without telling me. And you don't hide a threat because you think ignorance will keep me calm."
"Done."
"You agree too easily."
"People usually agree with me too easily. I find your version refreshing."
Her mouth curved despite herself.
"Do you ever think about leaving?" she asked.
"Every day now."
"Thinking isn't leaving."
"No."
That week, Adrian closed an illegal betting settlement line that moved cash through Vale Freight contractors. It cost him two million dollars a month and angered three captains who had mistaken his patience for permanent consent.
He also ordered a legal audit separating Vale Freight from every underground account.
The decision reached Mara before Adrian mentioned it. Three restaurant employees arrived at her desk worried that a payroll contractor had suddenly vanished. Mara checked their deposits, found that lawful wages were intact, and documented every question instead of offering promises she could not guarantee.

That evening, she placed the list in front of Adrian.
"If you dismantle part of your world, ordinary people cannot discover the consequences from an empty bank account."
"Their wages will be protected."
"Put it in writing."
He did. By morning, every legitimate employee had a signed payroll guarantee funded from Vale Kitchens' operating reserve.
Caleb placed the first report on his desk Friday morning.
"If you keep cutting this fast, Rourke won't be the only one who comes after you."
"Then we find out who works for the business and who works for the crime."
"And what do you plan to be when you're finished?"
Adrian thought of Samuel's photograph.
"Someone who can walk through Mara's door without bringing armed men behind him."
At three that afternoon, a florist delivered a long white box to Mara's apartment.
Two dozen white anemones lay inside.
Lucy clapped when Mara lifted the lid.
"Adrian flowers!"
Mara smiled—then noticed the plastic card tied to one stem.
It was not a message.
It was a Vale Freight access badge.
She did not touch it.
Mara drew Lucy back, photographed the box, and called Caleb before she called Adrian. Then she put on kitchen gloves, closed the lid, and moved everyone into June's apartment across the hall.
Adrian arrived within twenty minutes.
Mara met him in the corridor.
"Did you send them?"
"No."
"I didn't think so."
Caleb's technician sealed the box inside an evidence bag. The access badge belonged to Thomas Greer, a Vale Freight dispatcher who had died in a boating accident eighteen months earlier.
"Badge records show it opened Gate Four three nights ago," Caleb said.
"Then someone kept his credentials alive," Mara replied.
Caleb looked at her with new respect.
"Yes."
Adrian faced Mara. "I want you, Lucy, and June moved tonight."
"Where?"
"A secured house in Lake Forest."
"A house chosen by you, guarded by men I don't know, where Lucy can't go to school and my mother can't see her doctors?"
"A place Rourke cannot reach."
"You don't know that."
"I know it is safer than this building."
Mara folded her arms.
"Add visible security. Change our routes. Give me an emergency plan. We stay here unless you can identify an immediate attack."
"Those flowers are an immediate threat."
"They are also evidence. I handled them correctly because you told me enough to act. Don't punish me for refusing to become helpless."
Adrian's first instinct was to order the move.
He felt the command rise, sharpened by years of obedience from everyone around him.
Then he saw Lucy peering through June's doorway, the wooden swallow clutched in her fist.
Protection without choice was another kind of cage.
"All right," he said. "You stay. Security doubles. Caleb gives you every name and every route."
Mara exhaled.
Caleb's phone rang. He listened, then looked at Adrian.
"We pulled Gate Four's footage. The man using Greer's badge wore a cap, but facial mapping found a partial match."
"Who?"
"Evan Pike. Vale Freight payroll division. He died six months ago."
Mara's gaze moved to the sealed flowers.
Two dead employees.
Two identities still walking through Adrian's company.
Someone had not merely entered his system.
Someone had built ghosts inside it.
