"The Girl Who Gave the Devil a Flower" Chapter 4 The Call at 2:17 A.M.
Chapter 4
The Call at 2:17 A.M.
Adrian arrived at Mara's apartment eleven minutes after Caleb's call.
She opened the door with the chain still fastened.
"Lucy and my mother are inside," she said. "So whatever you brought here, you explain it in the hallway."
Adrian glanced at the narrow landing. A neighbor's television murmured through the wall. Somewhere below, a baby began to cry.
"The man connected to that SUV is Gideon Rourke. He controls gambling rooms and smuggling routes on the South Side. Our families have avoided open conflict for twenty years."
"And now he is following me."
"He may be trying to learn whether you matter to me."
Mara's eyes hardened. "Do I?"
The honest answer was dangerous.
"Yes."
She looked away first.
Adrian told her about the leaked port bid and the photograph outside the coffee shop. He did not pretend the risk was small. He also did not tell her to abandon her home.
"I can put security outside the building," he said. "They will stay out of sight. You keep your routines unless Caleb identifies an immediate threat."
"And if I say no?"
"I ask you to reconsider. I don't make the decision for you."
The door opened another inch.
"Two people," Mara said. "No one follows Lucy into preschool. No one enters this apartment without permission. And I get their names."
"Agreed."
"If anything changes, you tell me before one of your men tells you."
"Agreed."
She studied him as though searching for the trap in his consent.
"Good night, Adrian."
The door closed.
At 2:17 that morning, his private phone rang.
He answered before the second vibration.
"Adrian?"
Mara's voice was thin beneath the wail of a siren.
"My mother couldn't breathe. We're in an ambulance. They said her heart rhythm is unstable. I left Lucy with Mrs. Alvarez, but I—"
She stopped to draw air.
"Which hospital?"
"St. Catherine's."
"I'm on my way. Stay on the phone until you arrive."
"I don't need you to fix anything."
"I know."
"I just needed someone who wouldn't panic."
"Then talk to me."
He dressed while she described the paramedics' movements in fragments. Caleb was waiting downstairs by the time Adrian reached the street.
At the emergency department, Mara sat alone beneath a television showing a silent weather forecast. Her work clothes were hidden beneath an old gray coat. She held a plastic bag containing June's slippers and medication bottles.
Adrian bought coffee from a machine and placed it in her hands.
"Don't tell me she's going to be fine," Mara said.
"I won't lie to you."
He sat beside her.
For twenty minutes, neither spoke.
Then Mara began to cry without making a sound. Adrian did not touch her. He stayed close enough that she would not have to be alone and far enough that comfort did not become a demand.
A nurse called Mara's name. June had been stabilized, but fluid around her lungs and an irregular rhythm required admission and a cardiology review.

When the nurse mentioned insurance authorization, Mara's shoulders tensed.
Adrian waited until the woman left.
"Vale Kitchens has an employee emergency fund," he said. "It covers care coordination and gaps your insurance denies. The fund existed before you. Using it is part of your employment, not a favor from me."
"I haven't finished my first week."
"Your coverage began on your start date. Read the policy before you sign anything."
Mara searched his face.
"You planned that."
"The benefit date? Yes. Your mother's emergency? No."
An exhausted laugh escaped her.
By dawn, a care coordinator had confirmed that June would be reviewed by the hospital's cardiac team and that the fund would cover what her plan did not. No one was pushed aside. No doctor received a secret call. Doors opened because someone had finally explained which handle to use.
At eight, Mrs. Alvarez arrived with Lucy.
The child ran to Mara, then stopped when she saw her mother's face.
"Is Grandma's heart tired again?"
Mara knelt. "A little. The doctors are helping it rest."
Lucy nodded, accepting the answer with grave concentration. Then she climbed into the chair beside Adrian and leaned against his arm.
"Your eyes look like Mommy's."
"How do Mommy's eyes look?"
"Like she wants to sleep but her brain won't let her."
Mara covered her mouth.
Adrian gave Lucy half of the blueberry muffin Caleb had brought. She ate three bites, curled into his side, and fell asleep with the wooden swallow pressed against his wrist.
When June was moved upstairs, Mara returned to find them that way.
She stood in the doorway for several seconds.
"She's stable," she whispered.
Adrian opened his eyes. "Good."
Mara sat beside him and lifted Lucy carefully onto her lap.
"Samuel kept the shop open for three years after it stopped making money," she said. "He said his mechanics had nowhere else to go. I told him numbers didn't care about loyalty."
"He probably told you people mattered more than numbers."
"Exactly that."
Her fingers moved through Lucy's curls.
"He died on a Tuesday. I was packaging medical supplies overnight. He called once, and I silenced it because supervisors wrote us up for phones on the floor."
"Mara—"
"I know it wasn't logical. Grief doesn't care about logic."
Adrian looked through the glass at the brightening sky.
"My brother Owen died three years ago. Someone sent him to a warehouse with bad information. By the time I arrived, there was nothing left to fix."
"Was it Rourke?"
"I couldn't prove it."
"Did you try to leave after that?"
"No. I tried to become impossible to hurt."
Mara looked down at Lucy sleeping between them.
"How is that working?"
He almost laughed.
"Poorly."
When Adrian left the hospital, Caleb waited beside the car with his phone in hand.
"We pulled the parking cameras," Caleb said. "The gray SUV entered at three twelve and left at five forty. No one came inside."
Adrian looked back at the hospital windows.
The vehicle had not followed Mara by accident.
Gideon had followed her into the worst night of her life—and wanted Adrian to know it.
