"The Girl Who Gave the Devil a Flower" Chapter 3 A Job, Not Charity
Chapter 3
A Job, Not Charity
Mara almost rejected the interview.
She had spent two nights researching Vale Kitchens, its ownership, employee reviews, pending lawsuits, and the duties listed in the email. The position was real. So was the salary. More importantly, the company had advertised a similar role eighteen months earlier and failed to fill it.
That did not mean Adrian had no hand in reopening it.
She called the hiring manager anyway.
"Before I come in," Mara said, "I need to know whether Mr. Vale ordered you to hire me."
There was a pause.
"Mr. Vale authorized the position," the manager replied. "He also instructed me not to hire anyone who couldn't do the work."
It was not the answer Mara wanted.
It was honest enough to earn an interview.
She wore her only navy blazer and left Lucy with June. At the Vale Kitchens office, a woman named Denise Harper asked about benefits enrollment, emergency grants, scheduling disputes, and the payroll certificate Mara had completed three years earlier.
Mara answered with examples from her real life.
She explained how a missed form could cost an hourly worker two weeks of medication. She proposed a multilingual emergency-request process that did not require employees to explain private crises to restaurant managers. When Denise presented a fictional budget shortfall, Mara found duplicate administrative charges in less than four minutes.
The interview lasted ninety minutes.
Denise closed the folder.
"Why are you working banquets?"
"Because qualifications don't pay rent unless someone recognizes them."
Denise smiled without pity.
"Can you start Monday?"
Mara did not answer immediately.
"I want the salary, reporting line, probation period, and benefits date in writing. I also want confirmation that my employment doesn't depend on a personal relationship with any shareholder."
"You have one with a shareholder?"
"No. I want to keep it that way."
Denise slid the written offer across the table.
"Then we're in agreement."
Mara signed.
Adrian heard about it from Denise, not Mara.
"She's the first candidate who read every page of the benefits handbook before the interview," Denise told him. "If you interfere with her work, I'll tell her."
"Good."
"I'm serious."
"So am I."
Adrian ended the call as Caleb entered his office carrying two folders.
One was thin and blue. The other was black and much thicker.
"Good news first," Caleb said. "The Pilsen property is still vacant. The holding company bought six parcels during the same quarter and has done nothing with any of them."
"And the bad news?"
Caleb opened the black folder.
"Our Calumet port renewal numbers leaked before the bid closed. Rourke Logistics undercut us by exactly one point eight percent."
Adrian's attention sharpened.
Gideon Rourke had controlled illegal gambling on the South Side before Adrian was old enough to drive. The truce between them was not friendship. It was arithmetic. Open conflict cost more than either man could earn from winning it.

"Who had the final numbers?"
"Seven people. I've cleared three. Two more are being checked."
Caleb placed a surveillance photograph on the desk.
A Vale Freight accountant stood outside a coffee shop, shaking hands with a man employed by one of Rourke's shell companies.
In the background, crossing the sidewalk with a grocery bag in one hand, was Mara.
Adrian studied the photograph.
"When was this taken?"
"Yesterday. Six twelve in the evening. The shop is two blocks from her apartment."
"Was she followed?"
"I don't know yet. The photographer was watching our accountant. Mara may be incidental."
"May be isn't an answer."
"I'm working on it."
Adrian stood at the window overlooking the river. Barges moved below like dark pieces on a board.
For years, no one had known where to wound him. Owen's death had taught Adrian to remove the visible parts of himself until only power remained. He had no habits, no public lovers, no favorite restaurant, no predictable Sunday morning.
Then Lucy had handed him a flower in a crowded ballroom.
Two days later, Mara arrived for her first morning at Vale Kitchens.
Adrian stayed away.
He knew she would assume he was watching. The only gift he could give her was the chance to discover that he was not.
Mara spent the day mapping every emergency benefit the company claimed to offer and every obstacle employees faced when trying to use one. By five o'clock, she had a list of fourteen failures and a proposal to correct six of them within a month.
Denise read it twice.
"You're going to make the regional managers hate you."
"Only the lazy ones."
"I knew I liked you."
For the first time in months, Mara left work before dark.
She bought strawberries from a corner market because Lucy loved them and because, for once, the price did not have to be subtracted from the electric bill in her head.
Halfway home, she noticed a gray SUV across the street.
It pulled away when she looked directly at it.
Mara stopped beneath the awning of a pharmacy and took out her phone. She photographed the vehicle as it reached the intersection. The license plate was blurred, but the left taillight had a crack shaped like lightning.
She did not call Adrian.
Not yet.
She sent the image to herself, uploaded it to a private folder, and changed her route home twice.
When she reached her building, the SUV was gone.
Her phone rang as she climbed the stairs.
"Ms. Ellis?" a man's voice said. "This is Caleb Shaw. We met briefly at the hotel."
Mara stopped on the landing.
"Why are you calling me?"
"I need to ask whether you noticed anyone watching you yesterday or today."
Her grip tightened around the grocery bag.
"A gray SUV followed me from work."
Silence.
Not surprise. Calculation.
"Did you get a plate?" Caleb asked.
"No. I got a photograph."
"Send it to this number. Then stay inside and keep away from the windows."
"You don't get to give me orders."
"You're right. But someone connected to Gideon Rourke may know who you are, and I would rather apologize for my tone after you're safe."
Mara had never heard the name before.
The fear in Caleb's voice told her she should have.
She unlocked the apartment, stepped inside, and secured the deadbolt.
Lucy ran toward her, shouting about strawberries. June looked up from the kitchen table.
Mara smiled for her daughter while sending the photograph.
Across the city, Adrian's phone lit with the image.
Caleb enlarged the cracked taillight.
"It matches one of the vehicles registered to Rourke's shell company."
Adrian looked at the photograph until the screen dimmed.
Gideon had not touched Mara.
He had not threatened her.
He had done something more deliberate.
He had made sure she saw the car.
Adrian picked up his coat.
"Where are you going?" Caleb asked.
"To tell her the truth before Rourke tells it for me."
