"The Woman Who Walked Down 87 Floors" Chapter 4 — The Man Who Stayed Behind
Harry Ramos could have kept walking.
He was already more than halfway down the North Tower.
The street was getting closer.
His coworkers were escaping.
His family was somewhere outside the building, unaware of exactly what was happening to him.
And Harry had every reason to keep moving.
Then he saw a stranger sitting on the stairs.
His name was Victor Wald.
And Victor could not keep going.
Harry stopped.
That decision would determine where both men's names would be placed more than a decade later.
Harry Ramos was 45 years old.
He lived in Newark, New Jersey, with his wife, Migdalia, and their children.
Only one week earlier, Harry had accompanied his five-year-old son, Eugene, on his first day of school.
Eugene saw another child crying.
The little boy comforted him.
Harry watched.
According to the family account later published in his memorial profile, Harry was proud of what his son had done.
One week later, Harry would make a remarkably similar choice for a man he had never met.
Harry worked as head trader for May Davis Group.
87th floor.
North Tower.
When American Airlines Flight 11 struck the building at 8:46 a.m., Harry was among the May Davis employees who began the long evacuation downward.
Most of his coworkers would survive.
Harry would become the only May Davis employee who did not.
Not because he couldn't get down.
Because he stopped.
Several floors below was another man.
Victor Wald.
Victor was 49.
He lived in Manhattan with his wife, Rebecca, and their two daughters.
He loved books.
History.
Judaism.
His apartment was filled with things he had read and collected.
Victor worked as a broker for Avalon Partners on the 83rd floor of the North Tower.
After the impact, Victor started down too.
Floor after floor.
But the descent became increasingly difficult.
Eventually, Victor reached a point where he struggled to continue.
People passed him.
They were frightened.
Everyone knew the same thing:
They needed to get out.
Then Harry Ramos reached him.
Harry did not know Victor.
Victor did not know Harry.
They worked only a few floors apart in the same enormous skyscraper.
Until that morning, their lives had never intersected in any meaningful way.
Now one man was trying to escape.
And the other could no longer continue alone.
Harry stopped.
There was at least one other May Davis employee involved in this part of the escape: Hong Zhu.
Survivor accounts later reconstructed how the men tried to move downward together.
It was slow.
Victor was exhausted.
But Harry stayed with him.
They continued descending.
The floors kept getting lower.
Outside, events were moving much faster.
At 9:03 a.m., the South Tower was struck.
At 9:59 a.m., it collapsed.
The North Tower was still standing.
But not for much longer.
Inside, Harry still had a chance to keep moving.
Victor was struggling.
The surviving accounts converge on the crucial decision:
Hong Zhu continued downward.
Harry stayed with Victor.
There is one sentence associated with Harry's decision that is particularly well documented.
Survivors overheard him tell Victor:
“I'm not going to leave you.”
The National September 11 Memorial & Museum itself recounts that statement in its documentation explaining the placement of victims' names at the Memorial.
Harry had no obligation to Victor.
They were strangers.
He had his own wife.
His own children.
His own life waiting outside.
But Harry stayed.
The two men continued downward as far as they could.
They were last seen on the 36th floor of the North Tower.
At 10:28 a.m., the North Tower collapsed.
Harry Ramos did not make it out.
Neither did Victor Wald.
For their families, September 11 did not end when the television coverage stopped.
There were empty chairs.
Unanswered questions.
Children growing older without their fathers.
Harry's son Eugene had gone to his first day of school only seven days earlier.
Victor's two daughters would grow up carrying their own memories of him.
One small piece of Victor's life eventually entered the collection of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.
It wasn't something from the office.
It wasn't something recovered from the rubble.
It was a handwritten note Victor had once given his daughter Alex.
The note is now preserved in the Museum's collection.
It tells his daughter that watching her grow and learn was one of the great pleasures of his life.
It is an ordinary father's note.
Which is exactly what makes it extraordinary now.
Years passed.
Plans began for a permanent memorial at the site of the World Trade Center.
There was an unusual problem.
Nearly three thousand names had to be placed around the memorial pools.
They would not simply be arranged alphabetically.
Families were allowed to request what became known as “meaningful adjacencies.”
A husband could be placed beside his wife.
Coworkers could remain together.
Friends could appear next to friends.
And sometimes, people who had barely known each other before September 11 could remain together too.
Victor Wald's family made one of those requests.
Victor's wife asked that her husband's name be placed beside the name of the stranger who had refused to abandon him.
Harry Ramos.
The request was honored.
Today, at the North Pool of the 9/11 Memorial, the two names appear together.
Victor Wald.
Harry Ramos.
Two men who went to work that Tuesday morning without knowing each other.
Two men whose paths crossed somewhere inside a burning skyscraper.
One couldn't keep going.
The other could have.
But he stayed.
Joanne Capestro escaped from the same 87th-floor company where Harry worked.
She reached the street.
Harry did not.
Years later, when Joanne donated her recovered World Trade Center identification card to the 9/11 Memorial Museum, the Museum recorded something significant in the object's credit line.
The card was given:
In memory of Harry Ramos.
The coworker who never came down.
The father whose five-year-old son had comforted a crying child one week earlier.
And the stranger who stopped on a staircase when almost everyone else was trying desperately to get out.
Harry Ramos had started that morning on the 87th floor.
He made it as far as the 36th.
Today, his name still sits beside Victor's.
But while Harry and Victor remained inside the North Tower, Joanne was already outside.
She had survived 87 floors.
Then she heard the roar.
The South Tower began to fall.
And within seconds, daylight disappeared.
