"After my husband's funeral, my son took me to a deserted road and said:" Chapter 2 This Is Where You Get Out
Chapter 2
This Is Where You Get Out
I did not sleep that night.
The farmhouse spoke around me in its familiar language. Water moved through old pipes. Wind brushed the apple branches against the west wall. The refrigerator motor clicked on, paused, and clicked off again.
Beside me, Thomas’s half of the bed remained smooth.
For most of my life, I had mistaken keeping peace for preserving love. I had covered Grant’s first failed investment because he had a new baby. I had funded Brooke’s nutrition studio because she had cried in this room and said she only needed one chance.
Then another chance.
Then one more.
Thomas had always been softer with them than I was. During his illness, softness had become secrecy. He had asked me not to tell the children how fast the cancer was moving.
“Let them live without the shadow a little longer,” he had whispered.
I had agreed because he was dying.
Now I wondered what our silence had taught them.
At four thirty, I got out of bed.
Behind the mirrored medicine cabinet was a narrow cedar panel. Thomas had installed it after a string of farm burglaries in the eighties. The latch stuck in damp weather, but I knew exactly where to press.
Inside lay our passports, birth certificates, insurance papers, and a small fireproof document case.
I carried it to the bed and opened it.
My name appeared alone on the first deed.
ELAINE RUTH PORTER, AN UNMARRIED WOMAN.
I had bought those eighteen acres in 1980, two years before I married Thomas. The upper parcel was scrubland then, considered too steep for profitable planting. My father had called it foolish. Thomas had called it a beginning.
Together we built a reservoir near the ridge and placed the main irrigation pump house on that parcel. The recorded map also showed the access road connecting the lower orchard to the county road. Every truck serving the packing shed used it. Every development plan would need it.
Thomas and I called all the land ours because that was how we lived.
Legally, those eighteen acres had remained mine.
I put the deed, the recorded easement map, and the fireproof envelope containing Thomas’s final medical schedule into my handbag. I added my identification, bank card, medications, phone charger, a clean blouse, and the small amount of cash I kept behind the flour canister.
Then I returned the empty document case to its hiding place.
By seven, I was in the kitchen wearing a wool coat over my dress.
Grant came downstairs carrying his car keys. Brooke followed with my suitcase.
“You’re ready,” she said, relief brightening her face.
“I would like to see Willow Creek.”
Neither of them asked why I had changed my mind.
Grant loaded the suitcase into his black SUV. I kept my handbag on my lap.
We drove past the north rows where Miguel’s crew had begun checking frost fans. I saw Miguel near the equipment barn and almost raised my hand. Grant accelerated before he could look toward us.

Brooke talked from the passenger seat.
“They have yoga three mornings a week. And there’s a dining room, so you won’t have to cook unless you want to.”
“Your father liked my cooking.”
Her voice softened. “I know.”
“Do you?”
She turned toward the window.
At the highway junction, Grant should have taken the southbound ramp. Instead, he continued east on a county road that narrowed between bare fields.
“Is there another route?” I asked.
“Construction,” he said.
There was no construction sign.
Ten minutes later, he turned onto an unmarked gravel road. Alder trees crowded one side. On the other, an empty field stretched toward a line of low hills. We had passed the last farmhouse miles ago.
Brooke looked at him. “Where are we going?”
“I need to handle something first.”
“What?”
He did not answer.
I slipped one hand into my coat pocket and pressed the button on Thomas’s old digital watch. It had a timer function. The screen began counting seconds. I noted the time, the direction of the sun, and the faded number on the last utility pole we passed.
Grant drove another four miles before pulling onto a gravel shoulder.
He turned off the engine.
No one spoke.
Then he got out, walked around the SUV, and opened my door.
Cold air moved across my knees.
“This is where you get out, Mom.”
Brooke twisted in her seat. “What are you doing?”
Grant reached behind me and took the suitcase from the cargo area.
“The house and the business are ours now,” he said. “If she goes to Willow Creek, she’ll call lawyers the minute we leave. She’ll drag this out for months.”
“You said we were taking her there.”
“There’s a gas station about five miles west.” He set the suitcase on the gravel. “She has clothes. She has her medication. She can call someone.”
I looked at my son’s face and searched for the boy who had once slept beside a sick lamb because he thought it would be frightened alone.
I found nothing.
“You planned this,” I said.
“I planned to keep you from ruining what Dad wanted.”
“Thomas wanted me abandoned beside a road?”
His mouth tightened. “Don’t make this dramatic.”
Brooke pushed open her door. “Grant, we can’t leave her here.”
“Then get out with her.”
She froze.
That was the moment she made her choice. Not when she helped pack the suitcase. Not when she put a development brochure on my kitchen table the morning after her father’s funeral.
Here.
With one foot outside the car and every opportunity to stand beside me, Brooke looked at her brother, then slowly pulled her door closed.
Grant held out his hand as if assisting me from a restaurant booth.
I ignored it and stepped onto the gravel by myself.
Pain shot through my right knee. I steadied myself against the door frame, lifted my handbag, and walked toward the suitcase.
Grant shut the door.
The locks clicked before he reached the driver’s side.
Brooke stared at me through the glass. Her lips formed a word I could not hear.
Sorry, perhaps.
The SUV pulled away, throwing dust across my coat. Its taillights disappeared beyond the bend without slowing.
I stood still until the road became quiet again.
Then I checked my handbag.
Medication. Identification. Cash. Medical schedule. Deed. Easement map.
Everything that mattered was there.
My shoes were made for a funeral, not gravel. The gas station Grant had mentioned was west, but Cedar Hollow lay northeast. If I reached town, I could call Margaret Shaw from somewhere Grant would not think to monitor.
I left the suitcase on the shoulder. They had packed it, and I did not need its weight.
Using the utility poles and the morning sun, I turned toward Cedar Hollow and began walking.
Each step hurt. Each step also carried me farther from the woman they believed I was.
When the last trace of dust settled, I stopped thinking of Grant and Brooke as my children.
For the moment, they were simply two people who had made a terrible mistake.
