"When I could no longer drive, I asked my daughter if I could move closer, and then..." Chapter 5 The Price of Coming Back
Chapter 5
The Price of Coming Back
I took Brent's letter to Miriam the next morning.
She circled the number in blue ink.
"Who knew your net proceeds?"
"You, Janet, the title company, my bank, and me."
"Did Claire ever have access to your email?"
"Not mine. Maggie's, years ago. Claire helped organize bills during the cancer treatments."
Miriam turned the letter over.
"Check the accounts before we assume anything."
At home, I opened Maggie's old email for the first time in months. Most of it was pharmacy advertisements and notices from charities she had supported.
Buried in the settings was a forwarding rule created during her illness. Anything marked HOUSE, TAX, or INSURANCE went automatically to Claire.
The title company's final settlement statement had been sent to my email and copied to Maggie's household account because both addresses remained on the original mortgage file.
From there, it had gone to Claire.
The forwarding log showed it had been opened eleven months earlier.
Claire had known the house was sold almost from the beginning.
She had known exactly how much money I received.
She had simply never called to ask where I went.
I printed the log and gave it to Miriam.
"Change every password," she said. "Then we add an independent co-trustee and document your current capacity. If anyone later claims your stroke made you vulnerable, facts will answer before emotion does."
She proposed a trust company rather than Ruth, Eli, or anyone connected to them.
"That costs money," I said.
"So does defending good documents from a bad challenge. Independence matters here. If your daughter argues that new friends captured your estate, a professional fiduciary with no personal inheritance makes that argument harder."
"And Ruth and Eli get nothing from the trust?"
"Not unless you instruct otherwise."
"Then put it in writing that they cannot receive charitable distributions. I won't reward kindness by making it look purchased."
Miriam made a note.
I scheduled a neurological follow-up and signed authorization for Miriam to receive the capacity report. Then I closed Maggie's old email account.
It felt cruel for exactly five seconds.
After that, it felt like locking a window I had forgotten was open.
Claire called that evening.
"Dad, I found a place near us," she said. "Westbrook Manor. It has meals, transportation, nurses on-site—everything."
"I already have everything I need."
"But you'd be closer to the kids."
"The apartment I wanted last year was closer to the kids."
"This is different. They could visit on weekends."
"Could they?"
"Of course. Brent and I would help with the deposit."
I looked up Westbrook Manor while she spoke. The website showed stone fireplaces, white tablecloths, and monthly rates that started at $7,800 before care services.
"That's generous," I said. "Let's meet and discuss it."
She went quiet, surprised by how easily I agreed.
"Really?"
"Bring the financial information. Every fee, the contract, the deposit, and exactly how you imagine it being paid."

"I thought we could talk as a family first."
"Numbers are part of the family conversation now. Brent made sure of that."
We set a date for the following Saturday.
Before then, I handled another piece of unfinished business.
My Ford pickup still sat in a storage garage outside Cedar Hollow. I paid seventy dollars a month for a machine I would never use again. Eli had driven out twice to start it and keep the battery alive.
I asked him to meet me there.
"She's in good shape," he said after looking under the hood. "You could get decent money for her."
I handed him the title.
"I already did. One dollar. That's what the transfer form says."
He stared at my signature.
"No."
"That is an unusual response to a truck."
"I can't take this."
"You can. You have helped me for a year, and you never once turned it into an invoice."
"That's not why I helped."
"I know. That's why I'm giving it to you now, while I am alive and capable of enjoying your bad reaction."
He tried to hand the title back.
I folded my arms.
"If I leave it in an estate, people can tell stories about why you received it. This way, there is no inheritance and no bargain. Just an old man giving a good truck to a good mechanic."
Eli looked away and wiped one eye with the back of his wrist.
"The brakes need work," he muttered.
"Then I chose the right owner."
He accepted.
Claire did not wait until Saturday.
On Thursday afternoon, the front desk called to say my daughter was downstairs. I told them to send her up.
She arrived without flowers. Her hair was pulled into a loose knot, and shadows sat under her eyes. She stepped inside, glanced at the pharmacy bag on my kitchen counter, then looked at me.
"Brent doesn't know I'm here."
"That makes two of us."
She did not smile.
"We can't do the meeting on Saturday."
"Why not?"
She sat on the edge of my sofa and pressed both hands between her knees.
"We're in trouble."
I waited.
"Brent lost money. A lot of money."
"In the market?"
"That's what he told me at first."
"And now?"
Her mouth tightened.
"Sports betting. Online casinos. Then riskier trades because he thought he could win it back. He took out home-equity loans and opened credit cards I didn't know about."
"How much?"
"About two hundred seventy-five thousand dollars. Maybe more."
The number sat between us.
"Is the house secure?"
"For now. We're behind, and Brent's trying to restructure everything. If his employer finds out about the gambling debt, he could lose his job."
I poured two glasses of water and placed one in front of her.
"Did he ask you to find me an assisted-living facility?"
She stared at the glass.
"He said it would be easier if you were close."
"Easier to visit?"
She did not answer.
"Or easier to get access to my accounts?"
"I'm not here for money."
"Then why are you here?"
Her eyes filled.
"Because I made a terrible mistake. Because everything is falling apart, and I don't know what to do. We have no one else."
I thought of canned soup in the old kitchen. I thought of her voice saying everything that comes with it.
"Neither did I," I said. "You told me that was my problem."
