"Off Script with My Rival" Stay After the Credits

Roman stood beside the kitchen table with the ring enclosed in his hand.

Elliot waited.

"You wanted the beginning," Roman said. "It was room 314."

Their first apartment near USC. Two bedrooms, a narrow kitchen and an air conditioner that stopped working whenever the temperature passed eighty degrees.

Roman had arrived before him. Elliot still remembered the carefully arranged books and the untouched pot of coffee.

"You said you knew who I was," Elliot said.

"I had seen your audition for the housing program."

"That existed?"

"It was a film-student residence. Everyone submitted one."

Elliot had forgotten recording his introduction on a borrowed camera. He had talked too quickly and knocked over the tripod before the video ended.

Roman opened his hand.

"I watched yours more than once."

"How many times?"

"Enough to recognize you when you walked through the door."

Elliot looked at the silver ring. "When did you buy it?"

"Senior year."

"You barely spoke to me."

"Every conversation became an argument."

"That didn't stop you from starting them."

Roman accepted the accusation.

He had attended Elliot's performances without approaching him afterward. When classmates asked about Elliot, Roman answered because he assumed Elliot would prefer anyone else.

The audition Elliot believed Roman had stolen had ended differently too.

"The director offered me the role," Roman said. "I declined and asked him to watch your tape again."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"You already thought I was interfering with your career."

"You were."

"I was trying to help."

"You were terrible at it."

Roman almost smiled. "Yes."

On graduation night, he carried the ring in his pocket and waited outside Elliot's apartment. He planned to explain everything before leaving for London.

Elliot never came outside.

By morning, Roman's calls no longer went through.

"I thought you had made your decision," Roman said.

"I thought you were leaving because you had finally run out of things to win."

Roman closed his eyes briefly.

Elliot touched the ring hanging beneath his shirt. "Why did you become an actor?"

"At first, I thought you might see me."

"That's a terrible reason to choose a career."

"I found better reasons later."

"But I was the first."

"Yes."

Elliot stepped closer.

Roman stayed where he was.

"You could have told me any of this during filming."

"You wrote down a rule forbidding feelings."

"That rule was stupid."

"I suspected saying so would make you defend it."

Roman knew him too well.

Elliot took the ring from his hand and slid it onto his finger. The band fit more closely than he expected.

Roman watched the movement.

"I drove through the night because I thought I had lost you," Elliot said. "I don't want to do that again."

"You haven't lost me."

"Then stop deciding what I'm ready to hear."

Roman nodded. "All right."

"And tell me when you're leaving town."

"I will."

Elliot drew a breath. "There's one more thing."

Roman waited.

"I love you."

His composure finally broke.

Roman touched Elliot's face with both hands and kissed him. The movement remained careful, giving Elliot time to change his mind.

Elliot placed his arms around Roman's neck and pulled him closer.

When they separated, Roman rested his forehead against his.

"I love you too," he said. "I have for a very long time."

Sophie appeared briefly at the end of the hallway. She saw them, raised her coffee in silent approval and returned to the guest room.

Three months later, The Space Between Us premiered in Los Angeles.

Elliot stood in front of a hotel mirror while Roman adjusted the collar of his black tuxedo.

"You've fixed that twice," Elliot said.

"It keeps moving."

"Because you keep touching it."

Roman let his hands fall. "You're nervous."

Elliot reached toward his wrist, caught himself and placed his hand in his pocket.

"Maybe."

"We can enter separately."

"That would give the photographers something to speculate about."

"They already speculate."

Elliot turned to face him. "We walk in together."

Roman searched his expression. "Together?"

Elliot held out his hand.

Roman took it.

The red carpet outside the theater was crowded with reporters. Flashbulbs fired as soon as Roman stepped from the car.

People shouted his name from behind the barriers. Television crews called for him to turn toward their cameras.

Elliot emerged after him.

Roman kept hold of his hand.

The noise changed. More cameras lifted, and questions came from both sides of the carpet.

Roman glanced toward Elliot.

Elliot tightened their joined hands and continued walking.

Inside the theater, Elena embraced them near the entrance. Maya stood with several crew members, while Dana pretended the sudden frenzy outside had nothing to do with her production.

"You two just destroyed the publicity schedule," Dana said.

Roman looked toward the doors. "Was it a good schedule?"

"It was very expensive."

Elliot smiled. "Send us the bill."

The audience filled every seat.

Elliot sat beside Roman as the lights dimmed. Their shoulders touched, and the ring rested warm against Elliot's finger.

He watched Noah enter the hotel bar and find Julian waiting beside the jukebox.

The first kiss appeared larger than life across the screen.

Elliot remembered his shaking hands and Roman asking permission before every change in the choreography.

Roman's fingers found his in the darkness.

Two hours later, the credits began to roll.

The audience rose in applause.

Roman leaned close enough to be heard over the noise. "You were incredible."

"You've said that before."

"I meant it then too."

The cast gathered onstage for the Q&A. Reporters asked about the adaptation, the filming process and the chemistry between Noah and Julian.

A woman near the front raised her hand.

"Roman, viewers have been discussing your connection with Elliot since the first trailer. How did you create something that convincing?"

Roman reached for his microphone.

Elliot touched his arm.

Roman looked at him and waited.

Elliot lifted his own microphone. "We spent years misunderstanding each other."

Several people in the audience laughed.

He looked down at their hands. Roman's remained open on the seat between them.

Elliot took it.

Flashbulbs erupted across the theater.

"The chemistry came from trust," Elliot continued. "Eventually."

The reporter glanced at their joined hands. "Does that mean the rumors are true?"

Roman left the answer to him.

"Yes," Elliot said. "We're together."

The room filled with voices, camera shutters and questions from every direction.

Dana covered her face with one hand. Elena laughed beside her.

Roman brought Elliot's hand to his lips.

After the event, they avoided the reception and returned to the auditorium.

The screen had gone dark. Empty seats descended toward the stage, still littered with abandoned programs.

Roman stopped beside the last row and sat down.

Elliot remained in the aisle. "What are you doing?"

"Waiting."

"For what?"

Roman looked up at him. "You."

Eight years earlier, Roman had waited outside an apartment with a ring in his pocket.

This time, Elliot knew where to find him.

He sat beside Roman and rested their joined hands between them.

"I'm here."

Roman leaned back against the seat.

They remained in the empty theater after the final members of the cleaning crew disappeared into the lobby.

There were no lines left to perform.

Neither of them needed one.
