"Off Script with My Rival" The Name on the Call Sheet

The email arrived at 3:47 a.m.

Elliot read it twice. Then a third time.

"We are pleased to offer you the role of Noah Park…"

He sat up fast. Cracked his elbow against the wall. Swore.

The per-episode number glowed on his phone.

It was enough to pay off the collectors. Enough to stop eating ramen for breakfast. Enough to pretend he wasn't a failure at twenty-eight.

He signed before his brain caught up. Vancouver. BL series. Money.

He didn't ask who else was cast.

Vancouver smelled like rain and fresh paint.

Elliot stepped out of the rideshare with one duffel bag and a jacket that had seen better days.

A P.A. pointed him toward Stage 4.

The sign on the door read:

THE SPACE BETWEEN US — EPISODIC BLOCK 1.

Under it, smaller:

NOAH & JULIAN.

His stomach tightened.

He'd read the pilot on the plane. He knew what Noah & Julian meant.

He also knew he needed the money more than dignity.

Inside, the stage was chaos. Lights. Cables. A producer yelling into a phone.

Dana, the line producer, found him first.

"Elliot Hayes? Makeup at nine. Blocking at ten. Intimacy meeting at eleven."

She looked him up and down.

"Eat something. You look like death."

"Jet lag," Elliot said.

Dana didn't believe him. She had bigger problems.

"Your co-lead is already here," she said.

Elliot's feet stopped.

"Co-lead?"

"Roman Hale."

The name hit him like a physical blow.

"Roman Hale?" Elliot repeated.

"You know. Crimson Tide. The Last Argument. Every magazine cover for three years."

Elliot knew.

He knew the name the way he knew his own heartbeat. The way he knew an old scar.

Of course it was Roman Hale.

The green room had mismatched furniture and a coffee machine older than Elliot.

Roman sat on the couch, reading his phone.

He wore a gray sweater and dark jeans. His hair was damp.

He looked older. Sharper. The boyish softness was gone.

But he held himself the same way. Quiet. Confident. Untouchable.

Elliot must have made a sound.

Roman looked up.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Roman's expression flickered. Surprise? Something else?

Then it smoothed into neutrality.

"Elliot." His voice was lower than Elliot remembered. "You made it."

"Apparently."

Elliot dropped his bag harder than necessary.

"I didn't know you were attached."

"I know." Roman's mouth twitched. "Production wanted to announce at upfronts."

"So you just signed on without checking?"

"No."

The answer was simple. Direct.

Roman didn't elaborate.

Elliot felt irritation crawl up his spine.

"So you knew," Elliot said slowly. "You knew, and you didn't mention it."

"I wasn't sure you'd take the role if you knew."

Elliot laughed. No humor in it.

"That's manipulation."

"It's pragmatism." Roman's voice stayed calm. "We're adults. We can be professional."

"Professional." Elliot tested the word. "Right. Because we have such a great history."

The silence was heavy.

Elliot thought of college. The girl who asked for Roman's number. The audition he lost. The way Roman existed everywhere, like a reminder of everything Elliot wasn't.

Dana appeared in the doorway.

"Both of you. Intimacy coordinator. Now."

Maya had a warm smile and a binder full of forms.

Elliot sat on one side of a folding table. Roman sat on the other.

Maya spread out laminated sheets.

"Pilot has three major intimate scenes. Bar kiss. Bathroom. Bedroom."

Elliot nodded.

"Before blocking, we go through consent and boundaries."

Maya turned to Roman.

"Your boundaries for physical contact?"

Roman was quiet.

"I'm comfortable with what the script requires," he said. "But I'd like to establish something first."

He turned to Elliot.

Elliot's breath caught.

Roman looked at him. Really looked.

"Before we rehearse," Roman said, "I want to know what you're comfortable with."

Elliot blinked. "What?"

"Your boundaries. Where can I touch you? Where can't I?"

Elliot's mouth opened. Closed.

He'd expected smug. Dismissive. A fight.

He hadn't expected Roman to ask permission.

"The script specifies—"

"The script specifies what characters do." Roman's voice was gentle. "I'm asking about you. Elliot Hayes. Not Noah Park."

Maya watched with quiet interest.

Elliot felt like he was failing a test.

"Shoulders are fine," he said stiffly. "Arms. Hands. I don't know."

"Think about it now." Roman leaned forward. "I'm not going to touch you anywhere you don't want. Not on camera. Not off."

The words landed somewhere in Elliot's chest.

He thought of all the incidental contact over the years. Brushed shoulders. Roman leaning over his computer. Small touches that meant nothing.

Or maybe meant everything.

"Don't surprise me," Elliot said. "Ask first. Even if the script says it's okay."

"Done." Roman nodded. "And if you want to stop, tell me. I stop. No questions."

"I know how intimacy coordination works."

"I know you do." Roman's expression softened. "I wanted to say it anyway."

Maya made a note.

"Great. Bar scene. Kiss against the wall. Roman pins Elliot's wrists. Let's choreograph."

They spent an hour on mechanics. Hand placements. Angles. The exact moment the kiss deepens.

By the end, Elliot felt grounded.

Then Maya said, "Dry run. No cameras. See how it feels."

Elliot stood. Roman stood.

They faced each other across the empty stage.

"Whenever you're ready," Maya said.

Roman stepped closer. Slowly.

He stopped a few inches away.

Elliot could smell soap. Something warm.

"Can I touch your face?" Roman asked quietly.

Elliot swallowed. "Yes."

Roman's fingers brushed his jaw. Feather-light.

His thumb traced Elliot's cheekbone.

Elliot's breath stuttered.

"Like this?" Roman murmured.

"Yeah." Elliot's voice was hoarse. "Like that."

They ran the scene.

Roman's hands found Elliot's wrists. Pinned them gently against an invisible wall.

He leaned in. Stopped just short.

His breath was warm against Elliot's lips.

The almost-kiss felt more intimate than any real kiss Elliot had ever had.

"Cut," Maya said.

Roman stepped back immediately.

His hand dropped. His expression went neutral.

Like he hadn't just spent thirty seconds looking at Elliot like he was the only person in the world.

Elliot stood there, heart pounding.

What the hell had he gotten himself into?

That night, Elliot stared at the ceiling of his rented apartment.

It smelled like lemon air freshener and someone else's cooking.

He'd avoided Roman for the rest of the day. Separate wardrobe fittings. Separate script meetings.

Dana had noticed the tension. She kept their paths from crossing.

But Elliot couldn't stop thinking.

The way Roman asked. The way he waited.

The way his fingers felt against Elliot's skin. Gentle.

It didn't fit.

The Roman Hale he knew in college got everything without trying. Collected admirers like trophies. Never noticed Elliot seething in his shadow.

Maybe you didn't know him as well as you thought.

He shoved the thought aside.

He couldn't second-guess himself. Not now. Not with a debt to pay and a career to salvage.

But as he drifted off, he remembered Roman's voice.

"I wasn't sure you'd take the role if you knew."

Why had Roman wanted him for this part?

Why had he specifically requested Elliot?

And why, after all these years, did it feel like Roman was hiding something?

Elliot didn't have answers.

But he had the uneasy feeling he was about to find out.

Whether he wanted to or not.
