"The Girl Who Texted the Wrong Man" Chapter 10 What Power Is For
Chapter 10
What Power Is For
Matteo called a meeting the following morning.
The same six men who had watched him abandon the waterfront dispute gathered around the walnut table. Vincent stood to his right, silent and unconvinced.
“Derek Walsh is under the protection of the court,” Matteo said.
One man laughed before realizing no one else had.
“You want us to protect him?”
“I want no one connected to me to touch him, threaten him, contact his family or influence his case.”
“Boss, people already heard what he did.”
“Then they will hear this too. Anyone who interferes answers to me.”
The room changed. His men understood threats. Restraint confused them.
Vincent waited until they were alone.
“You’re staking your authority on a court case.”
“I’m staking it on my order.”
“And if Walsh gets out?”
“Then Sarah’s lawyer responds. The police respond. If he violates the order, the judge responds.”
“You trust that?”
Matteo looked at the empty chair across from him. Twenty-five years earlier, a system had failed Isabella. He had used that failure to justify becoming the only system he trusted.
“Not blindly,” he said. “But Sarah asked me not to replace one monster with another.”
Vincent lowered his eyes. “Understood.”
Derek remained in custody. The open warrant, the assault charges, witness intimidation and his recorded admissions made release increasingly unlikely. Lisa Walsh gave prosecutors her statement, strengthening evidence of a pattern without ever meeting Matteo.
Sarah spent three weeks recovering in a confidential transitional apartment chosen through a survivor-services organization. Matteo paid nothing directly. Rebecca helped Sarah secure emergency assistance, reclaim her bank account and negotiate a payment plan with her landlord.
When Matteo offered to cover the balance, Sarah refused.
“You said I could choose.”
“You can.”
“Then stop asking every three days.”
He almost smiled. “Every four?”
“Once a month.”
“Agreed.”
She returned to part-time bookkeeping from home while her headaches eased. Emma went back to school after meeting with a counselor. The first week, she called Sarah twice each day to make sure she was still there. By the fourth, she called once.
Matteo never arrived without permission.
He sent messages first. When Sarah said no, he stayed away. When Emma asked him to teach her chess, he brought a wooden set and let her choose the first move.
“Why does the queen get to go everywhere?” Emma asked.
“Because the person who designed the game understood who was doing the difficult work.”
Sarah laughed from the kitchen, the first time Matteo had heard the sound.
It changed the room more than any threat he had ever made.
The trust fund required more care.
Matteo asked Rebecca to create it without telling Sarah. Rebecca refused.
“You do not build independence behind someone’s back,” she said. “That is control wearing a generous suit.”
He disliked the sentence because it was accurate.
So he brought Sarah the documents himself.

“No,” she said before opening them.
“It is for Emma’s education and emergency living costs. You are the independent trustee. I cannot direct distributions, revoke it or use it to contact either of you.”
“Why?”
“Because the night she texted me, she should not have needed a dangerous stranger to be her only option.”
Sarah read every page. Rebecca reviewed them separately and confirmed the limits.
“I’ll accept it for her education,” Sarah said. “Emergency funds require my approval. And Emma will know where the money came from when she’s old enough.”
“Those terms are acceptable.”
“They weren’t a negotiation.”
“I’m learning.”
Sarah’s exhaustion softened into something that was not yet trust. “Emma says you stayed while the police handcuffed you.”
“Briefly.”
“Why didn’t you leave?”
“Because Derek expected me to. Because your daughter needed the truth to matter more than my reputation.”
Sarah looked at Emma, then back at him. “That answer frightens me less than it probably should.”
“Keep being careful.”
“I intend to.”
The next change happened inside Matteo’s organization.
He ordered Vincent to establish a legitimate, independently administered emergency fund for families escaping domestic violence. It would pay licensed providers—hotels, transportation companies, legal clinics—not hand cash to people who could be pressured to surrender it.
“Anonymous?” Vincent asked.
“Completely.”
“Is this about Isabella?”
“It should have been, years ago.”
Vincent built the proposal with Rebecca’s recommendation and an outside nonprofit as administrator. Matteo would not be allowed to know recipients’ names. Trained advocates would screen requests, and every payment would be audited.
At first, Matteo disliked being unable to choose who deserved help.
Rebecca noticed. “The fund cannot become a list of people who owe you gratitude.”
“I don’t want gratitude.”
“Then you don’t need their names.”
He signed the agreement.
The first approved expense was two nights in a motel for a woman and her teenage son while a shelter bed opened. The second replaced identity documents. The third covered a cab to a courthouse.
Small distances, Matteo learned, could separate terror from a door that locked.
Weeks later, Emma invited Matteo to her school’s family reading afternoon.
He nearly declined. Courtrooms, warehouses and private dining rooms made sense to him. An elementary-school library in daylight did not.
Sarah watched him examine the invitation as if it might explode.
“You faced Derek with a broken bottle,” she said. “But third graders frighten you?”
“Third graders ask direct questions.”
“Then answer honestly.”
He went.
The school required identification at the front desk. Matteo handed it over, accepted a visitor sticker and waited while an administrator checked his name twice. He had purchased access to far more guarded buildings with a phone call. Here, for Emma, he followed every rule.
Inside the library, a boy asked whether Matteo was a movie star. Another asked why he wore a suit on a Friday afternoon.
“Habit,” Matteo said.
Emma rescued him by placing the rabbit book in his hands. “You can do the moon voice.”
“There is a moon voice?”
“There is now.”
He read the moon’s lines to twelve children while Sarah hid a smile behind one hand.
Emma introduced him to her teacher as “my friend Matt,” then corrected herself with sudden certainty.
“Actually, he’s kind of my Uncle Matt.”
No one had given Matteo a family name in twenty-five years.
He sat beneath paper stars hanging from the ceiling while Emma read the story about the rabbit who wanted the moon. When she finished, she leaned close.
“Did you keep the promise to Isabella now?”
Matteo looked across the library at Sarah. She was standing without fear, speaking to another mother, her life no longer arranged around Derek’s moods.
Then he looked at Emma, waiting for an answer.
“I think I’m only beginning,” he said.
