"The Girl Who Texted the Wrong Man" Chapter 7 He Stayed
Chapter 7
He Stayed
The front door swung inward before Derek could answer.
Matteo crossed the living room with both hands visible and placed his phone on the floor beside Emma.
“The recording is open,” he told her. “The messages are on your mother’s phone. Give both to the officer. Tell them there’s an unloaded pistol on top of the refrigerator, a knife upstairs and Derek tied beneath the kitchen sink.”
Then he turned toward the armed officers entering the house.
“I’m staying right here.”
The first officer saw Sarah and shouted for the paramedics. The second aimed at Matteo.
“Hands on your head. Now.”
Matteo obeyed.
Two paramedics rushed past as the officers moved him against the wall. One removed the empty holster beneath his jacket while another cuffed his wrists.
Derek began yelling from the kitchen.
“He broke in! He attacked me! That’s Matteo Ricci—check who he is!”
The officer behind Matteo paused at the name, then tightened one cuff.
“You Ricci?”
“My identification is in my inside pocket.”
“Why are you here?”
Emma held up Sarah’s phone with both hands. “I texted him.”
The room seemed to notice her all at once.
An officer lowered his weapon. A female officer named Ruiz crouched several feet away so she would not tower over the child.
“What’s your name, sweetheart?”
“Emma Peterson. I was trying to text Mrs. Bell, but I put one number wrong.” She pointed to Matteo’s phone on the floor. “That one has Derek talking. Matt said not to change anything.”
Ruiz pulled on gloves and collected both phones.
“You did exactly right.”
The paramedics stabilized Sarah’s neck, checked her pupils and fitted an oxygen mask over her face. Emma tried to follow when they lifted her mother onto a stretcher.
“I’m going with her.”
“We’ll get you there,” Ruiz said.
“No. I promised I wouldn’t leave her.”
Matteo turned his head. “Let her ride with her mother if your protocol allows it.”
The officer holding him said, “Nobody asked you.”
“She has spent enough of tonight being told her choices don’t matter.”
Ruiz studied Emma’s bare feet, the unicorn pajamas and the charcoal coat hanging from her shoulders. Then she spoke to the lead paramedic.
“Can she sit up front?”
“If an officer follows.”
Emma looked at Matteo. “You said you’d make sure I got there.”
“And you will.”
“Are you coming?”
He could not promise what the police would do with him.
“As soon as they’re finished with me.”
The paramedic wheeled Sarah toward the door.
Derek shouted again. “The kid’s confused! Ricci coached her. He planted all this.”
Ruiz rose with the phones secured in evidence bags. “How long ago did you send the first text, Emma?”
“Before Matt came. Derek didn’t know I had the phone yet.”
“And these are all the messages?”
Emma nodded.
“Nobody deleted anything?”
“No. Matt told me not to.”

Ruiz glanced toward Matteo. Her expression did not soften, but it changed.
“Take the child to the ambulance,” she told another officer. “I’ll handle the phones.”
Emma walked three steps, then turned back.
“Matt?”
“I’m here.”
She seemed to need only that answer. She followed Sarah out into the rain.
Officers entered the kitchen. Derek’s voice shifted instantly from rage to injured outrage.
“Thank God. Get me loose. That man threatened to kill me.”
“Are you Derek Walsh?”
“Yes.”
“There’s an active warrant for your arrest.”
For the first time all night, Derek had no excuse ready.
An officer cut the towels and belt, only to replace them with steel cuffs. Derek stumbled into the living room, saw Matteo restrained against the wall and smiled.
“He assaulted me.”
“After you swung a broken bottle at him?” Ruiz asked.
“Who told you that?”
“You did.” She lifted the evidence bag containing Matteo’s phone. “The recording begins before the officers entered. We’ll preserve the original and document the transfer.”
Derek’s smile disappeared.
Ruiz sent officers to photograph the knife, the bottle, Sarah’s bank card and the blood on the coffee table. She read the text thread without scrolling farther than necessary, calling out timestamps for her partner to record.
Before touching Derek’s phone, she photographed it where Matteo had placed it and asked who had handled it.
“I removed it during the search,” Matteo said. “I did not unlock it.”
“And the keys and bank card?”
“Same pocket. I moved them out of his reach and no farther.”
Ruiz documented his answer on her body camera. Matteo understood what she was doing: separating what officers found untouched from what he had already handled. In court, that difference could decide whether evidence survived an accusation that he had planted it.
“Secure the upstairs hall,” Ruiz told her partner. “Photograph everything before anyone moves the knife.”
She did not accept Matteo’s conclusions, only the locations he identified. That, too, was protection—of a kind Matteo had never respected until now.
Each message built a timeline Derek could not talk over.
At 11:03, Emma said he was hitting Sarah.
At 11:09, she said she was hiding.
At 11:31, she said there was blood.
At 11:46, she wrote: He found me.
All of it existed before Matteo entered the house.
“This still doesn’t make him innocent,” Derek said.
“It doesn’t have to,” Ruiz replied. “It makes your story impossible.”
Matteo hid his surprise. He had expected suspicion from the police. He had not expected precision.
“My firearm is unloaded,” he said. “Top of the refrigerator. Magazine separated. I will provide ownership documentation through counsel.”
Ruiz nodded to another officer, who retrieved and secured it.
“Why did you come alone?” she asked.
“The child said she had seconds. My people would have attracted attention.”
“Your people?”
“You know who I am.”
“I know your reputation.”
“Then you know I had easier ways to make him disappear.”
Derek cursed from across the room.
Ruiz held Matteo’s gaze. “But you didn’t.”
“No.”
“Then give me your statement from the beginning,” Ruiz said. “No omissions designed to protect you.”
Matteo described the first text, his questions, the drive and the open door. He admitted entering with a firearm and restraining Derek. He provided Dr. Chen’s call history and Vincent’s preserved upload times.
“Did anyone working for you enter this property?”
“No.”
“Are any of them nearby?”
“Three blocks away. They have orders to remain there.”
“Tell them to leave.”
Matteo sent the order in front of her. Vincent acknowledged. Two minutes later, an outside unit confirmed that the waiting vehicles had departed without approaching the scene.
Matteo surrendered control one verifiable step at a time.
The ambulance pulled away with Emma beside Sarah.
Matteo watched its lights vanish through the rain.
He gave Ruiz the access information needed to copy the audio without altering the file. Vincent confirmed by text, through an officer, that the original screenshots and uploaded photographs had been preserved with timestamps. Matteo answered every question concerning the rescue, refusing only those unrelated to the house.
Forty minutes later, Derek was taken away on the open warrant while detectives remained to process the scene. Matteo’s cuffs came off, though his weapon stayed in police custody pending review.
“You may still hear from us,” Ruiz said.
“You know where to find me.”
His phone rang in the evidence bag before she returned it. The hospital number filled the screen.
Ruiz allowed him to answer on speaker.
Dr. Chen’s voice was controlled and urgent.
“Matteo, Sarah’s scan shows bleeding around the brain. They’re taking her into surgery now.”
