"The Girl Who Texted the Wrong Man" Chapter 6 The Monster’s Excuse
Chapter 6
The Monster’s Excuse
Matteo did not look at the phone recording from the counter.
He kept his attention on Derek.
“Why couldn’t you let her call?”
Derek’s eyes narrowed. He had finally heard the trap in his own words.
“I didn’t mean it like that.”
“Then explain what you meant.”
Outside, tires hissed over the wet street. Blue light swept across the window again, brighter this time.
Derek pulled against the belt around his wrists. “Untie me. We can both walk out the back before they get here.”
“You seem to believe we have the same problem.”
“I know who you are now.”
Matteo said nothing.
“Ricci,” Derek continued. “I saw your picture online after that waterfront hearing. You don’t want cops finding you in some woman’s house with a gun and a man tied to a pipe.”
“Why couldn’t Emma call them?”
“You’re not listening.”
“I am listening very carefully.”
Derek glanced at the back door. Hope and calculation moved across his face.
“Let me go, and I’ll forget you were here. Sarah will back me up. She always does once she calms down.”
Matteo’s voice cooled. “Has this happened before?”
“No.”
“You said she always backs you up.”
“Arguments happen.”
“Do arguments usually leave her unconscious?”
“She hit the table.”
“After you pushed her.”
Derek swallowed.
Matteo let the silence stretch. Men rushed to fill silence when they feared what another person might conclude from it.
Derek did exactly that.
“I pushed her once. That was it. She got between me and the kid.”
“What were you going to do to Emma?”
“Nothing. Scare her a little, maybe. Teach her respect.”
“With a broken bottle in your hand.”
“I forgot I had it.”
“And the knife in your pocket?”
“I use it for work.”
“At eleven o’clock in a child’s bedroom?”
Derek’s face reddened. “You’re twisting everything.”
“I haven’t had to.”
A car door slammed outside.
The sirens stopped, leaving the house in a sudden, pressurized quiet. Police radios crackled beyond the front yard.
Derek lowered his voice. “You need to think. I’ve got warrants.”
“I know.”
“Then you know they’ll take me in before I can tell them anything useful about you.” He leaned forward as far as the restraints allowed. “Untie me, I go out the back, and this ends. Nobody has to know.”
“What are the warrants for?”
“Nothing serious.”
“Failure to appear is one.”
Derek stared.
“Two prior domestic assault complaints,” Matteo continued. “Unpaid child support. An ex-wife who learned to recognize your apologies for what they were.”
“Those charges went nowhere.”
“Complaints,” Matteo corrected. “I said complaints.”
The distinction told Derek exactly how much Matteo knew.
“My ex was crazy,” he said. “She used the courts to punish me.”
“Sarah is unstable. Emma lies. Your ex-wife is crazy.” Matteo counted the women and child off without moving his hands. “How unfortunate that innocence keeps surrounding you.”

“You don’t know me.”
“I know the pattern.”
Matteo had met killers who spoke of death as business. He had met men who betrayed brothers for money and men who built careers from other people’s addiction. Few of them considered themselves cruel.
Derek was worse in one particular way. He had entered a grieving family’s home pretending to repair what was broken. Then he had used every repaired hinge and paid bill as proof that the people inside belonged to him.
“Sarah needed me,” Derek said. “After Daniel died, she couldn’t keep anything together. I fixed the sink. Covered the electric bill. Picked the kid up twice when Sarah worked late. You think that means nothing?”
“It means you knew where they were vulnerable.”
“It means I was the man of the house.”
“No.” Matteo leaned closer. “It means you were invited in.”
A hard knock struck the front door.
“Boston Police! If anyone inside can hear me, call out!”
Emma stopped speaking in the living room.
Derek’s gaze sharpened with desperate triumph. “There. Your time’s up.”
Matteo’s phone vibrated on the counter. Vincent’s message appeared beneath the active recording display.
Four officers front. EMS staged behind. Our cars holding.
Matteo typed one-handed.
No one moves. No contact with police.
“What are you going to do?” Derek asked. “Hand them a recording you made while holding me prisoner?”
“You were restrained after attacking me with a broken bottle.”
“In a house you broke into carrying an illegal gun.”
“The door was open.”
Derek smiled for the first time. “They know your name. They know what you are. The second they see your face, I become the victim.”
Another knock rattled the door.
“Police! Show us your hands and come to the front entrance!”
Matteo looked through the kitchen doorway.
Emma knelt beside Sarah, swallowed by his charcoal coat. One small hand held her mother’s. The other still gripped the phone she had used to summon a stranger.
“Mommy,” she whispered, “the ambulance is here. You can wake up now.”
The words found the oldest fracture in Matteo and opened it cleanly.
He remembered Isabella beneath white hospital sheets. He remembered promising to help frightened children and then spending twenty-five years confusing power with protection.
The old Matteo would have taken Derek through the back door. The old Matteo would have solved the problem in a warehouse where no witness could challenge his version of justice. By dawn, Derek Walsh would have been a rumor.
But Emma did not need another violent man deciding what happened in secret.
She needed an ambulance that could enter without fear. She needed photographs, messages and a living defendant. She needed her own truth to survive the night.
Matteo picked up the phone from the counter. The recorder continued counting upward.
“You chased an eight-year-old because she tried to call the police,” he said. “You did it after you struck her mother.”

“I told you, Sarah came at me.”
“You pushed her into the table.”
“She wouldn’t get out of the way.”
“And when Emma ran?”
“I had to stop her before she ruined my life!”
The admission burst from him loud enough to carry through the kitchen door.
Silence followed.
Then Emma’s voice came from the living room.
“You ruined it yourself.”
Derek’s face changed.
Matteo felt something inside him change too.
Emma had spent the night hiding. Now, with her mother’s hand in hers and help beyond the door, she had spoken where Derek could hear her.
Matteo stepped into the doorway so Derek could no longer see the child.
“Go to the front door, Emma,” he said. “Keep away from the glass. Tell them your mother needs the paramedics first.”
She looked up at him. “Are you coming?”
There was the question Derek had been waiting for.
Matteo could hear officers moving around the side of the house. The back exit would be covered within seconds. Vincent’s men were close enough to create a distraction, close enough to turn an already dangerous scene into chaos.
All Matteo had to do was send one word.
Instead, he texted Vincent.
Stand down. Whatever happens, no interference.
Derek saw the decision in his face and laughed.
“You’re finished, Ricci. Either you run and leave me here to tell the story, or you stay and let them put cuffs on the great Matteo Ricci.”
Matteo removed the pistol from beneath his coat.
Derek’s laughter died.
Matteo ejected the magazine, cleared the chamber and set the weapon high on top of the refrigerator, far from Derek and out of Emma’s sight.
Then he returned to the phone and stopped the recording.
Outside, an officer shouted that they were entering.
Matteo looked down at the man bound to the pipe—the man who had mistaken fear for respect, money for ownership and a woman’s silence for consent.
“Tonight, you don’t disappear,” Matteo said. “Tonight, you answer for everything.”
