"The Girl Who Texted the Wrong Man" Chapter 2 The Promise He Buried
Chapter 2
The Promise He Buried
“No,” Matteo said to the empty car. “Not tonight.”
He called Emma’s number.
The call rang once before she rejected it.
Good. She still had the phone. She was still conscious enough to remember that speaking could expose her.
He typed while the sedan tore down the rain-black street.
Don’t answer out loud. Is he in the room?
The three dots appeared.
Then disappeared.
Matteo counted five seconds. Ten. Fifteen.
At twenty, a message arrived.
He went back downstairs. The chair fell and he heard it. I’m behind Mommy’s dresses now.
Matteo released a breath through his nose.
Stay there. Can you keep talking to me by text?
I’m tired.
The words struck harder than the sight of blood had.
He knew that kind of exhaustion. It came after terror had burned through every reserve the body possessed. He had heard it in another eight-year-old’s voice beneath the mechanical beeping of a hospital room.
He would not hear it become silence again.
Stay awake for me. Tell me your whole name.
Emma Peterson.
What color is the room?
Yellow. Mommy let me pick it but Derek says it looks stupid.
What is your favorite thing in it?
My lamp. It has stars.
Good. Think about the stars. Is your mother Sarah Peterson?
Yes. How do you know?
Vincent’s search had reached his phone. The house was rented to Sarah Peterson, thirty-three, widow of Daniel Peterson. One dependent child, Emma. No criminal record. No calls from that address in the past year.
Because I’m finding you.
Another reply arrived.
Mommy makes chocolate chip cookies. The edges get crunchy but the middle stays soft.
Matteo’s vision blurred for half a second, although the windshield was clear beneath the wipers.
Isabella had loved the same kind.
Twenty-five years earlier, Matteo had not been Matteo to anyone who mattered. He had been Matt, twenty-two years old, working evenings at a repair garage and coming home with grease under his nails.
His mother worked double shifts at a garment factory. That left Isabella in his care after school. He burned soup, ruined laundry and once signed a spelling test in handwriting so bad her teacher asked if an adult had seen it.
But Isabella believed he could fix everything.
The radiator that knocked in winter. The bicycle chain that slipped every three blocks. The monsters beneath her bed.
She had dark curls and a laugh too large for their narrow kitchen. Every Thursday, if there was enough money left after groceries, they bought a small bag of chocolate chips. Isabella insisted the cookies were better when the centers looked unfinished.
Then came the Thursday when Matteo stayed late at the garage.
Two men began fighting in the apartment next door. One had a gun. Bullets passed through plaster as if walls were paper.
His mother survived with a wound to her shoulder.

Isabella did not.
Matteo remembered the fluorescent hospital lights. He remembered a police officer saying the shooter had fled. He remembered a doctor explaining internal bleeding in a voice so gentle Matteo wanted to break something just to make the world sound as violent as it felt.
Most of all, he remembered Isabella’s hand.
Small. Cold. Trusting him even then.
“Mikey,” she had whispered, using the name she alone called him. “You help kids when they’re scared, okay?”
He had promised.
Then she died before morning, and Matteo spent the next twenty-five years becoming the sort of man children were taught to fear.
The law had failed to catch the shooter. Power had not.
Matteo started as a bookmaker’s collector. He learned who owned the streets, who merely pretended to, and what frightened each of them. Within five years, men twice his age stepped aside when he entered a room. Within ten, he controlled three city blocks. Within fifteen, half the waterfront answered to him.
Each victory added another stone to the wall around his heart.
He told himself the promise had belonged to a young man who no longer existed.
Then a child named Emma texted the wrong number.
His phone vibrated.
Matt?
I’m here.
If Mommy wakes up, tell her I didn’t leave her.
You will tell her yourself.
What if she doesn’t wake up?
Matteo passed a delivery van on the left, earning a blast of its horn. Eleven minutes remained on the navigation screen.
He would not offer an eight-year-old an empty promise. He also would not let Derek Walsh decide the ending.
Then I’ll make sure she gets every chance to.
Emma did not answer.
He sent another question.
What story does your mother read you at night?
The one about the rabbit who wants the moon.
Does the rabbit get it?
No. But he sees it in the pond and thinks the moon came down to visit him.
Matteo almost smiled. “Smart rabbit.”
Vincent called.
Matteo answered through the car speakers. “Talk.”
“Sarah Peterson’s husband died in a traffic accident fourteen months ago. Derek Walsh has been associated with the address for about six months. I’m checking him now.”
“Do it faster.”
“Two cars are ready.”
“Hold them three blocks away. No sirens.”
“You’re close?”
“Seven minutes.”
“Police?”
Matteo looked at Emma’s messages on the mounted screen. For most of his adult life, police had represented obstacles, leverage or danger. Calling them into a room he intended to enter violated every instinct that had kept him alive.
But this was not his room. It was Sarah’s home, Emma’s evidence, Emma’s future.
“I’ll make the call when I see the house,” he said.
“That’s a dangerous place for you to wait around.”
“I didn’t say I would wait.”
He ended the call.
The navigation voice announced five minutes.
Emma texted again.
I hear him breaking things.
Matteo asked what floor Sarah had been on when Emma last saw her.
Downstairs by the couch. She told me to run.
Did Derek have a weapon?
He had a bottle. He threw it at the wall.
Anything else? A knife? A gun?
I don’t know.
That was enough uncertainty to kill someone.
Matteo checked the pistol beneath his coat but left it holstered. He had no intention of firing inside a house where a terrified child was hiding behind dresses.
Two minutes.
The neighborhood narrowed around him—two-story homes crowded behind chain-link fences, porch lights trembling in the rain. He reduced his speed before turning onto Emma’s street.
Number 86 stood halfway down the block.
Its porch light was broken. One upstairs window glowed faintly behind curtains. The hedges had grown high enough to hide the lower windows from the neighbors.
Matteo parked across the street and killed the headlights.
For a moment, he heard only rain drumming against the roof.
Then something shattered inside the house.
A man roared, “Where are you, you little liar?”
Matteo stepped out into the rain.
