"The Mafia King Chose His Son’s Angel" Chapter 9 — The Price of Being His Heart
Chapter 9 — The Price of Being His Heart
Damian Cross lost his freedom, but his money kept moving.
Two days after the family council, documents appeared online showing deposits of five million dollars into an account bearing Lily Bennett’s name.
The captions accused her of staging Leo’s rescue, seducing Adrian, and accepting payment for access to the Moretti heir.
By breakfast, reporters surrounded the penthouse.
By noon, Lily’s university suspended review of her financial-aid package pending an ethics investigation.
Her former coworkers were followed home. Mr. Daley received threats for defending her. A camera crew cornered one of Lily’s old foster mothers outside a grocery store.
The woman called Lily “quiet but calculating.” Soon a photograph of twelve-year-old Lily carrying a trash bag between foster homes appeared online.
Strangers dissected her childhood. Some called her manipulative for comforting Leo. Others claimed a woman raised without parents was unfit to help raise an heir.
Adrian ordered every childhood photograph removed where legally possible. He did not show Lily the worst comments, but she noticed newspapers disappearing from the penthouse.
Lily placed the unsigned guardianship papers on Adrian’s desk.
“I should go somewhere no one connects to you.”
“There is nowhere Cross’s attorneys will not connect to me.”
“Then I’ll make a statement. I’ll tell them I’m leaving.”
Adrian turned from the windows. “You will not stand before people who have already decided to call your pain ambition.”
“They’re hurting everyone around me.”
“Then I will stop them.”
“You cannot buy the entire internet.”
“No. But I can make lying expensive, and I can put the truth somewhere they cannot bury it.”
His financial team traced the account within hours. The routing number belonged to a Caribbean bank. The identity documents used to open it had been copied from a background report commissioned before the river attack.
Vivienne had ordered that report.
She came to the penthouse carrying the original contract.
“I wanted to know who she was,” she said. “I did not give this to Cross.”
“You gave it to a public-relations firm that subcontracted to Ethan,” Gabriel replied. “Cross bought the file from him.”
Vivienne looked at Lily. “I was wrong about you.”
“You were careless with me,” Lily said quietly.
It was not an attack. That made Vivienne flinch more.
“Yes,” she answered. “I was.”
Adrian’s attorneys prepared defamation claims, forensic reports, and subpoenas. Independent auditors verified that Lily had never received Moretti money beyond documented security, clothing for the foundation gala, and temporary housing after her eviction.
Adrian offered to transfer funds into her name so she would never worry about rent again.
Lily shook her head.
“If you want to help me, let the truth be enough.”
“The truth did not pay your rent before this began.”
“And your money cannot be the reason I survive it.”
Adrian accepted the limit. Instead, Lily would select her own attorney, paid through a neutral witness-support fund. Nothing else would enter her name.

He studied her for a long moment, then canceled the transfer.
The emergency shareholders’ meeting was broadcast publicly.
Adrian stood before the Moretti Crown board with his wound hidden beneath a dark suit. Lily watched from a private room with Leo and Elena.
“Miss Bennett did not seek access to this family,” Adrian said. “My failure to protect her privacy caused every disruption now before this company.”
The forensic auditor displayed the false account’s creation records. The named bank confirmed in writing that Lily had never controlled it. Cross’s shell company funded every deposit.
The university reinstated her aid before Adrian finished speaking.
Then Mr. Daley appeared by video.
“Lily arrived before sunrise every day for two years,” he said. “She returned to work soaking wet after saving that boy. If she wanted fame, she had a hundred cameras waiting. She chose the espresso machine.”
Her professor spoke next. So did a former caseworker and two café employees.
The former caseworker held up Lily’s college essay.
“At eighteen, Lily wrote that children remember the adult who kneels beside them while everyone else discusses what should be done. She did not become that person after meeting the Morettis. She has been that person all her life.”
Lily covered her mouth.
She had believed that being unwanted meant being unseen. Yet these people had remembered.
Adrian announced the creation of the Bennett House Initiative, an independently governed fund supporting foster youth aging out of care. Lily would hold no financial control and receive no personal payment. The name honored what she had survived, not what she owed him.
Vivienne entered the main chamber before the broadcast ended.
“I commissioned the report that exposed Lily Bennett’s private history,” she said at the podium. “I did so from prejudice, and my negligence allowed criminals to weaponize it. Miss Bennett did not deceive this family. I failed it.”
Moretti Crown shares recovered before the market closed.
The correction did not erase every insult. It made the lie impossible to repeat without the evidence appearing beside it. The university dean called Lily personally and entered a formal apology into her academic file.
Mr. Daley offered Lily her old position back. She thanked him but declined. Returning would mean pretending the river had changed nothing.
Adrian arranged no replacement job for her. He only secured a private route back to class until the press withdrew. For once, his protection created space rather than a destination. What Lily did with that space remained hers.
That evening, Lily returned the guardianship papers to Adrian.
They were still unsigned, but she had placed Sophia’s paper star inside the folder.
“Not no,” she said. “Just not while danger is choosing for me.”
Adrian kissed her forehead. “Then I will wait until you are free.”
His secure phone rang.
The district attorney spoke for less than a minute.
When Adrian ended the call, every trace of warmth had left his face.
“Cross wants a reduced sentence,” he said. “He is offering proof of who sold Sophia’s route to her killers.”
