"The Mafia King Chose His Son’s Angel" Chapter 2 — The Man Who Never Asks Twice
Chapter 2 — The Man Who Never Asks Twice
Lily stared at Adrian beneath the dead streetlight.
“Someone tried to kill Leo?”
“Yes.”
The simplicity of his answer frightened her more than a dramatic warning would have.
“Why would anyone hurt a six-year-old?”
Adrian’s eyes hardened. “Because hurting him is the fastest way to reach me.”
A woman stepped from the front passenger side of the sedan. She was in her forties, dressed in a dark wool coat, with an NYPD badge clipped beside a private-security credential.
“I’m Elena Ruiz,” she said. “Former detective. Mr. Moretti asked me to show you this before you decide anything.”
Decide. The word mattered.
Elena held out a tablet. The image showed Lily’s apartment entrance less than an hour earlier. A man in a baseball cap stood across the street, photographing the building.
The next image caught part of his face.
“He was also at the river,” Elena said. “He left when you pulled Leo from the water.”
Lily looked toward her building.
A shadow moved behind the glass door.
Adrian shifted instantly, placing his body between Lily and the entrance. Two men emerged from the sedan, their hands beneath their coats.
The shadow vanished.
“You can stay here,” Adrian said, his voice controlled, “and Ms. Ruiz will remain outside your door. Or you can come to the hospital, where there are police and private security on every floor.”
“Why the hospital?”
For the first time, uncertainty touched him.
“Leo has asked for you every time he wakes.”
Lily’s fear did not disappear. But she remembered small fingers gripping her wet sleeve and a child calling her an angel because she had arrived when no one else moved.
“I’ll go to the hospital.”
Adrian opened the car door himself.
St. Catherine’s private pediatric wing was silent except for the low hum of medical equipment. A nurse met them outside Leo’s room.
“He won’t let anyone examine him,” she told Adrian. “He keeps asking for the woman from the river.”
Lily stepped into the room.
Leo sat curled against the headboard, an oxygen monitor on his finger. A physician and two nurses stood several feet away. An elegant older woman in cream cashmere occupied the chair beside the window.
The moment Leo saw Lily, his face changed.
“Angel.”
He reached for her.
Lily went to him without thinking. Leo wrapped both arms around her neck and buried his face against her shoulder.
“You came back.”
“I promised you were safe.” She stroked his damp hair. “I wanted to make sure I was right.”
His breathing steadied.
The physician approached slowly. “Leo, may I listen to your lungs while Lily stays with you?”
The boy nodded.
No one spoke while the examination continued. Adrian stood at the end of the bed, watching his son lean into a woman he had known for less than twenty-four hours.

Lily expected power to make a man like Adrian careless with tenderness. Instead, he noticed every wince Leo tried to hide. He adjusted the blanket before the nurse could. When the boy coughed, Adrian’s hand tightened on the bed rail as if he would have taken the pain into his own body if he could.
“His lungs sound much better,” the physician said at last. “If the next scan is clear, he can go home tomorrow.”
Adrian nodded. “Thank you, Doctor.”
After the staff left, Leo refused to release Lily.
“Tell me a story,” he whispered.
“What kind?”
“One where nobody is scared.”
Lily swallowed the ache in her throat. She told him about a small lion who believed the moon followed him through the forest so he would never have to walk home alone.
Halfway through, Leo fell asleep against her heart.
Adrian moved closer and tucked the blanket around them. His knuckles brushed Lily’s arm, and the brief contact sent unexpected warmth through her.
“He hasn’t fallen asleep in someone’s arms since his mother died,” he said quietly.
Lily looked down at Leo. “I’m sorry.”
“So am I.”
The older woman by the window rose.
“This has gone far enough, Adrian.”
Her voice was polished and cold.
“Lily, this is my aunt, Vivienne Moretti,” Adrian said. “She chairs our family foundation.”
Vivienne’s gaze traveled over Lily’s diner uniform and inexpensive coat.
“We are grateful for what you did,” she said. “But gratitude can create confusion. An employee may begin to imagine an invitation into a hospital room is an invitation into a family.”
Heat rushed into Lily’s face.
“I didn’t ask for anything.”
“Not yet.”
The words landed exactly where Vivienne intended.
Lily carefully shifted Leo against the pillows. She had spent her childhood learning when she was unwanted. The lesson never stopped hurting, but she knew how to leave quietly.
“I should go.”
Adrian caught the blanket before it slipped from Leo’s shoulder.
“No.”
He did not raise his voice. He did not need to.
Adrian turned to his aunt.
“She is the reason my son is alive. You will address her with respect.”
Vivienne went still.
“You don’t know her.”
“I know she jumped into freezing water while everyone else watched.” His gaze cut toward her. “I also know she refused money, cameras, and recognition. What I do not know is why you believe our name gives you permission to humiliate her.”
“I am protecting this family.”
“So am I. Leave.”
For a moment, Vivienne looked genuinely stunned.
Then she collected her handbag and walked out without another word.
Lily stared at Adrian. No one had ever defended her that way—not a foster parent, not a teacher, not any of the people paid to decide whether she deserved a safe place to sleep.
“You didn’t have to do that.”
“Yes,” he said. “I did.”
Leo stirred. His hand searched blindly until it found Lily’s fingers.
Adrian watched their hands join.
When dawn silvered the windows, he walked Lily to the private elevator. Elena waited nearby to escort her home.
“There is one more thing,” Adrian said.
He opened a slim velvet case.
Inside lay a sapphire pendant surrounded by tiny diamonds. The stone was deep blue, almost the color of the river before sunrise.
Lily stepped back. “I can’t accept that.”
“It contains an emergency transmitter. Press the stone twice and my security team will receive your location.”
“Then put it in something that doesn’t look like it belongs in a museum.”
The corner of his mouth almost lifted.
“The device was built for this setting.”
He removed the necklace from the case but did not touch her.
“May I?”
Lily should have said no. The pendant was too beautiful, the man holding it too dangerous, and the tenderness in his question more unsettling than a command.
She turned and lifted her hair.
Adrian fastened the chain at the back of her neck. His fingers never touched her skin, yet she felt the heat of him all the same.
“If you are frightened,” he said, “you press it. I don’t care what time it is or where I am. I will come.”
The elevator doors opened.
Vivienne stood on the other side.
Her eyes dropped to Lily’s throat. Every trace of color left her face.
“Adrian,” she whispered. “That belonged to your mother.”
