FOUR FEET DOWN
Mara drove the steel pin into the elevator track.
Metal shrieked. The outer doors stopped closing against her ribs, leaving just enough space for her to twist sideways.
Mikhail pulled harder.
Adrian struck him across the throat with his freed elbow.
Mikhail’s grip broke.
Adrian lunged upward, caught Mara beneath both arms, and hauled her across the threshold. Her knees scraped metal. For one sickening second, her feet swung above the black shaft beneath the car.
Then Adrian dragged her into the elevator and shoved her behind him.
"I told you to run."
"File a complaint."
The first captor charged.
Adrian ducked the man’s punch and drove him face-first into the wall. The second grabbed Adrian’s injured arm. Mara snatched the silver injector from Mikhail’s hand and slammed her palm onto the emergency alarm.
A hardwired siren screamed inside the car.
More important, a red recording light appeared above the control panel.
"The alarm records cabin audio," Mara said. "Every word from now on belongs to the police."
Viktor’s face changed.
"Break it," he ordered.
Mikhail swung at the panel.
Mara sprayed him with the fire extinguisher she had dropped at the opening. White powder filled the cramped car. Mikhail staggered, coughing and blinded.
Adrian used the moment.
He drove one man into Viktor and kicked the ceramic knife beneath the control cabinet. Then he caught Mikhail by the lapels and slammed him against the mirrored wall.
"You touched her," Adrian said.
His voice was almost lost beneath the alarm.
Mikhail smiled through blood. "So that’s the weakness."
Adrian drew back his fist.
"Don’t," Mara shouted.
He froze.
"He’s on camera. Let him explain to a jury why he knows I’m your weakness."
Adrian released him with a shove.
Footsteps thundered on the landing above. Thomas appeared with two museum officers and the backup injector in his hand.
"Mara!"
"We’re alive. Lock the upper controls."
Viktor lunged for the open doors.
Adrian intercepted him, but pain crossed his face. Blood darkened the side of his shirt where the ceramic blade had cut beneath his ribs.
Mara climbed onto the second-floor landing and turned back.
"Control module," she said.
"What?" Adrian asked.
"The emergency recorder. We need it before someone kills the power and wipes the buffer."
He stared at her as if she had suggested dismantling the building.
"You’re bleeding. Get out."
"So are you. Module. Lower right panel."
Adrian tore open the cabinet, found the black recorder, and pulled its cable. He passed the unit up to her before climbing onto the landing.
The museum officers kept their weapons trained on the car while Thomas engaged the manual door lock. Mara removed the steel pin, then drove it through the exterior locking bracket.
The doors sealed with Viktor, Mikhail, and the two attackers inside.
"This is kidnapping," Viktor shouted through the metal. "Moretti planned this. Every person in that room saw him enter voluntarily."

Mara held the recorder close to the seam.
"They’ll also hear you order your son to kill me."
For the first time, Viktor Sokolov had no answer.
The next fifteen minutes moved in flashing fragments.
Firefighters stabilized the elevator car. Federal agents removed the jammer and photographed it in place. Paramedics treated the unconscious liaison and wrapped Adrian’s side while he argued that a shallow cut did not require transport.
Mara placed the recorder directly into an evidence bag and signed the transfer form.
An agent asked her to explain every action from the moment the jammer activated. She did it in order: the altered route, the hardwired brake, the broken stairwell reader, the manual pin, the open landing.
"Did Mr. Moretti instruct you to stop the elevator?" the agent asked.
"No. Communications were down."
"Did you know Sokolov would be inside?"
"I knew Adrian was inside with people who had sabotaged his medical injector. That was enough."
The agent labeled her statement as a contemporaneous witness account and asked whether she consented to photographs of the bruises forming around her wrist.
Mara said yes.
Adrian watched from the paramedic’s chair. Every time the camera flashed over Mikhail’s fingerprints on her skin, his expression became colder. Yet he stayed where the medic had placed him.
That restraint was its own kind of evidence.
The ceramic knife was recovered beneath the control cabinet. Mikhail still had Adrian’s injector in his pocket. Grant’s cached messages linked the museum floor plan, the false catering credential, and the timed disturbance in the main hall.
When firefighters opened the car, Viktor and Mikhail emerged in handcuffs before a corridor full of reporters who had been pushed behind a security line.
Adrian’s communications director hurried toward him.
"We’ll say your advance team detected the threat—"
"No," Adrian said.
He stood with one hand pressed to his bandaged side. His tuxedo was torn, his face streaked with blood and extinguisher dust.
"Mara Ellis identified the plan. She stopped the elevator. She preserved the recording. Say her name correctly."
Every camera turned toward her.
For years, Mara had carried plates through rooms where powerful people never noticed her face.
Now she wanted to disappear.
Adrian read the impulse before she moved. He stepped between her and the nearest lens, blocking the shot without touching her.
"You decide whether you speak," he said quietly.
It was the first order he had not given.
Mara looked at Viktor being pushed toward the stairs.
"Not tonight."
Adrian nodded to his security team, and they cleared a private route.
Thomas caught up with them near the ambulance bay. He held a tablet, and the triumph had vanished from his face.
"We have another problem."
Adrian gave him a tired look. "Choose a smaller one."
"Someone initiated a remote purge of the Pier Seven transaction server seven minutes after Sokolov was arrested. Shipping records, vendor payments, private ledgers."
"Grant?"
"He’s sedated and under guard. The command originated inside Moretti Maritime."
Mara took the tablet.
The deletion had failed halfway through when the backup system isolated itself. A technical log preserved the credentials used to start it.
The account name contained no employee ID.
Only two initials.
AM-SR.
Adrian’s face lost what little color remained.
"My father’s root account," he said.
"Your father died twenty years ago," Thomas replied.
On the screen, the dead man’s credentials were still deleting files.
Thomas disconnected the affected server from the network. The deletion stopped at sixty-three percent.
"Whatever survived now exists in isolation," he said. "No remote access, including ours."
Adrian looked at the black screen. "Then tomorrow we open it in front of witnesses."
For years, his instinct had been to hide weakness before anyone could price it. This time he allowed the federal technician to seal the server rack while Mara signed as a company witness.
It was a small surrender.
Mara suspected it cost him more than the blood on his shirt.
