"A Heart the Vampire Cannot Claim" Chapter 8 — Before the Sun Found Us
Chapter 8 — Before the Sun Found Us
We carried the wall map back to the grain warehouse because Tessa's memory was more valuable than anything left in the chamber.
The rescued workers gathered around the table. Each recognized a different part of the route: a turn taken after the tram bell, the smell of salt through a vent, the angle of a ramp beneath the wheels.
I drew their fragments over the public plan.
"Four levels," I said. "The transfer cards divide people by letter. Tessa's east-basin lists use A through D."
"D was always the longest descent," Tessa said. "And the laundry came up wet."
Celia pointed to the intake pipes. "Lowest level, then."
A former record clerk named Mr. Bell traced a line from the deepest rooms to the eastern wall.
"Clearance means they empty the ledgers through here. Cargo has to leave somewhere."
The public plan called it a service duct. The dimensions were large enough for a freight trolley.
"An exit," I said.
"With a surface checkpoint," Gideon replied. "Revenue guards above, holding staff below."
"You take the checkpoint," Adrian said. "I'll go down."
His coat had opened. Fresh blood darkened the bandage at his left side.
"You can barely stand straight," I said.
"I can stand long enough."
"Sunrise is in less than two hours. If you go below, you'll be trapped when the surface passages fill with light."
"The people inside are already trapped."
"That isn't an argument for wasting the only person strong enough to hold the lower stair."
His eyes narrowed. "What do you suggest?"
I placed my finger on the surface checkpoint.
"At first light, the vampire guards withdraw beneath the shutters. I cross the exposed yard and open the freight exit from outside. Gideon controls the covered loading bay. You hold the lower stair and send people toward me."
"You would be alone in the yard."
"In daylight."
The difference silenced him.
Tessa marked the wash stations she remembered. Mr. Bell identified where original collection ledgers would be kept before monthly copying. Celia organized carts and blankets at the covered bay.
No one pretended the records mattered more than the people.
We reached Old Quay Seven while the moon still hung above the cranes.
Gideon's warrant opened the first gate. The second remained barred.
His men cut through the chain as an alarm sounded below.
A clerk tried to carry a box of punch cards through a side passage. Tessa recognized the blue edges from the east-basin station and stepped into his path.
"Those are tonight's transfers."
The clerk dropped the box and ran. Gideon let him go as far as the closed outer gate, where two guards detained him without leaving their posts.
They removed a ring of three service keys before taking him to the covered gatehouse.
I gathered the cards. Several bore the D symbol Tessa had marked, followed by bed numbers and extraction times. I divided them into two bundles: one for the rescue teams, one sealed as evidence.

"These give us rooms," I said. "They don't tell us which doors are still open."
Mr. Bell pointed to a penciled triangle beside three entries. "Manual release. Older facilities used it when the electric locks failed."
That gave Adrian's team a second route if the main stair closed.
Adrian descended with six guards. I followed to the first landing, where he caught my wrist gently.
"The surface route begins there," he said, pointing through a narrow door. "Wait for the eastern bell."
"Send them up before the smoke reaches them."
"I will."
His thumb rested against my pulse for one breath. Then he released me and went down.
I entered the service corridor.
Behind the wall, something heavy struck metal. Shouts followed. Adrian's voice cut through them, ordering doors opened.
The corridor ended at a shuttered booth overlooking the yard. Through its slit, I saw two Revenue guards retreat beneath a covered arcade as the first gray light touched the quay.
The eastern bell rang.
I pushed outside.
Cold light spread over wet stone. For once, the city belonged to human skin.
One guard shouted from the arcade but did not follow. I ran to the freight housing and fitted the first service key from the detained clerk's ring into the outer lock.
Wrong key.
I tried the next.
Inside the wall, smoke rolled against the viewing slit.
The third key turned.
The freight door lifted a foot, then stopped. A safety catch held the chain wheel. I climbed the housing, pulled the catch with both hands, and kicked the wheel free.
The door rose.
People crawled beneath it before it was halfway open.
I counted them into the covered bay. Gideon's guards took over, leading them toward Celia. Twelve. Nineteen. Twenty-seven.
A young woman stopped beneath the door and turned back.
"My father is in D-six."
The card in my hand placed D-six beside the archive room.
"What's your name?"
"Elise Marr."
I wrote it on my cuff because there was no time to find paper.
"I'll send the room number down. You keep moving and tell Celia your father's name."
She obeyed only after I repeated the promise.
I spoke D-six into the tube. Adrian answered once, breathless, and relayed it to the lower team.
Mr. Bell emerged carrying a ledger against his chest.
"Original collections," he coughed. "Names, dates, quantities."
I took it long enough to see entries beginning three years earlier.
"Go," I said. "Take it to Captain Ash. Don't stop for anyone else."
He ran with it beneath the cover.
Two guards followed with Elise's father on a freight board. She saw him from the medical line and broke away, then stopped herself before blocking the exit. Celia brought her to him under the awning.
The reunion lasted only seconds, but it reminded everyone still moving toward smoke that the numbers on our pages belonged to someone waiting outside.
More prisoners came through. Some walked. Some were carried on freight boards. I kept the exit clear and sent the strongest back only when they volunteered.
Then the flow stopped.
I heard a mechanical crash below.
Adrian's voice traveled through the speaking tube beside the door.
"Mara."
"I'm here."
"Saye dropped the separation gate. We're in the old loading hall with nine people."
"Can you raise it?"
"Controls are on her side."
I searched the public plan. The old loading hall sat beneath the roof's glass cargo lantern. At sunrise, its shutters were supposed to close automatically.
The indicator beside the speaking tube remained red.
"The sun shutters aren't down," I said.
"I noticed."
His voice was calm enough to make me afraid.
Lenora had disabled the automatic system before sealing them inside.
On the plan, a maintenance line ran from the shutter mechanism to a manual brake on the roof.
"There's an emergency release above you."
"The roof is exposed."
"Good thing I'm not a vampire."
"Mara—"
"Keep them away from the glass."
I left the speaking tube hanging and ran for the exterior ladder.
Sunlight had reached the top of the cranes.
To save the people below, I had to climb into it.
