"The Husband I Buried Never Existed" Chapter 3 — One Test
Chapter 3 — One Test
Two days later, I waited outside Harborlight's cardiac clinic with a folder beneath my coat.
Inside it were Lily's medical summary, the donor-screening request, the trust transfer, and every message Adrian had sent me.
Dana had advised me not to confront him alone.
I had promised I would not.
Then Lily woke at three that morning and asked whether her father knew she was sick.
"Not yet," I had lied.
By nine, I was watching the private elevators.
Adrian stepped out first. Miles Grant followed him, carrying two phones and a leather portfolio. Celeste was not with them.
Adrian saw me and stopped.
"You have to be kidding."
"One test."
"You violated the one condition I gave you."
"Celeste isn't here."
"She's in the examination room."
I held out the hospital request.
"Dr. Patel can send a phlebotomist downstairs. It will take less than twenty minutes. You don't have to meet Lily. You don't have to speak to me afterward."
"No."
"They can test paternity from a separate sample."
"No."
"She may have days, Adrian."
Miles glanced toward the reception desk, where two people had begun watching us.
"Mr. Vale," he murmured. "We should continue this somewhere private."
Adrian led me into an empty conference room and locked the door.
Miles remained beside it.
"This ends today," Adrian said. "No more hospital ambushes. No more invented children. No more attempts to reach my wife."
I placed Lily's medical summary on the table.
"Read the first page."
"I am not interested in props."
"Her name is Lily Bennett. She was born seven months after your accident. She has your eyes and the same scar-shaped dimple in her left cheek. She likes strawberry ice cream even though it makes her cough, and she refuses to sleep without a night-light. She is not a prop."
Something flickered in his expression.
"I used protection every time."
"Not every time. The night the power went out in our apartment, you opened the last condom and found it torn. You said one night couldn't change our lives."
He went still.
He remembered.
Then he looked at Miles instead of me.
"Give her the documents."
Miles opened the portfolio and placed a stack of paper on the table.
The first page was titled Confidential Settlement and Non-Disclosure Agreement.
The second was worse.
It was a declaration written in my name.
I, Mara Bennett, acknowledge that my relationship with the individual known to me as Evan Cole was brief and non-marital in nature. I further acknowledge that I have no evidence establishing Adrian Vale as the biological father of my daughter and that my prior demands for money were made without factual basis.
I read it twice.
"You want me to confess to extortion."
"I want protection from extortion," Adrian replied.
"You want me to say our marriage never happened."
"Legally, it didn't."

"You stood beside me in a courthouse."
"Under a name that wasn't mine."
He said it as if that made the cruelty smaller.
Miles set a pen beside the papers.
"Sign both," Adrian said. "You will receive the rest of the money. I will provide samples for paternity and HLA screening. After today, all communication goes through counsel."
"And if I refuse?"
"Then you leave with nothing more than the sixty thousand already transferred."
Lily's face rose in my mind—pale beneath the fluorescent lights, trying to smile while blood stained her pillow.
Adrian expected me to protect the dignity of a marriage he had fabricated.
I had no dignity left to spend.
Only time.
"I want the testing done through Harborlight," I said. "The samples remain in hospital custody."
Miles and Adrian exchanged a look.
"Agreed," Adrian said.
"Both tests drawn today."
"Agreed."
"The money goes into the medical trust, not my personal account."
His mouth twisted. "Still building your record?"
"Still keeping my daughter alive."
I signed the NDA.
Then I signed the false declaration.
My hand did not shake until I reached the final letter of my name.
Miles gathered the pages. While he scanned them with his phone, I asked to use the restroom before the blood draw.
I took my copy into a stall, photographed every page, and sent the images to Dana with one sentence.
Signed under threat of withholding urgent donor screening. Please add to Lily's file.
The reply came immediately.
Received. Saving now. Do not surrender your copy.
When I returned, a phlebotomist was arranging labeled tubes on the conference table. The hospital compliance officer stood with her, confirming Adrian's identification and consent.
For the first time since I found him alive, I felt something close to hope.
The door opened.
Celeste stood in the hallway.
"Adrian?"
He rose so abruptly his chair struck the wall.
Her gaze moved from the needle tray to me, then to the papers in Miles's hands.
"What is happening?"
"Nothing you need to worry about," Adrian said.
"Then why is she here?"
"Celeste—"
"He's being tested to see whether he can donate stem cells to Lily," I said.
Adrian turned on me. "You signed an agreement."
"She asked a question."
Celeste's face lost color.
"Why would Adrian be a possible donor?"
No one answered.
She looked at her husband.
"Who is Lily?"
"A child Mara claims is mine."
"Claims?"
Celeste pressed a hand to the center of her chest.
"At the house, you said she was someone you knew. You didn't say you had been married to her."
"I wasn't. Not legally."
"That isn't what I asked."
Adrian moved toward her. "Your heart rate is climbing. Sit down."
She backed away from his hand.
"Did you live with her?"
"It was during our separation."
"Did you make her believe you were dead?"
The cardiac monitor beneath Celeste's sweater began to chirp.

A rapid, electronic warning.
Adrian's face changed.
"Celeste, breathe."
She gripped the doorframe.
"You let me stand there and comfort the woman whose husband died. You listened while she cried, and you knew she was talking about you."
"I can explain."
"How?"
Her knees buckled.
Adrian caught her before she hit the floor.
The hallway erupted. A nurse called a rapid response. The compliance officer pushed the sample cart aside as two clinicians lowered Celeste onto a stretcher.
Adrian ran beside them toward cardiac emergency care, one hand wrapped around hers.
He looked back at me only once.
The hatred in his eyes was absolute.
Miles blocked me when I tried to follow.
"You should leave."
"He hasn't given the samples."
"Mrs. Vale is in a medical crisis."
"So is Lily."
The phlebotomist stood beside the untouched tubes. Her face was carefully neutral.
"Mr. Vale's consent remains valid," she said. "But he can withdraw it."
I sat in the conference room and waited.
Thirty minutes passed.
Then an hour.
At the end of the second hour, Adrian returned alone.
His tie was gone. His shirt collar hung open, and there were red marks across his palm where his nails had cut the skin.
"Is she stable?" I asked.
"They stopped the arrhythmia."
Relief passed through me despite everything.
"I'm glad."
"You did this to her."
"You did. Five years ago. I only arrived at the truth today."
He crossed the room so quickly that Miles stepped between us.
"You wanted a sample," Adrian said. "Take it. Then get out of my life."
The phlebotomist verified his wristband, name, and date of birth. She opened sterile packaging while the compliance officer watched.
Adrian rolled up his sleeve.
Blood flowed through the needle into the first tube, dark and steady.
One for paternity.
Four for donor typing.
Five small tubes that might tell us whether Lily had a chance.
When the last tube was sealed, the phlebotomist placed the samples in a locked carrier and left with the compliance officer.
I stood.
"Thank you."
The words tasted like rust, but Lily needed me to say them.
Adrian turned away.
I had almost reached the door when Miles's phone vibrated. He read the message and glanced at Adrian.
"The private lab can expedite the paternity portion," Miles said quietly.
Adrian lowered his voice.
"Nothing reaches Mara until I see the result first."
I stopped on the other side of the half-open door.
"And if the result creates a problem?" Miles asked.
There was a pause.
Then Adrian said, "Control it."
