"In My Fourth Life, I Chose the Rogue Prince" Chapter 8 — The Prince Behind Her Mother’s Death
Chapter 8 — The Prince Behind Her Mother’s Death
By sunset, Lucien controlled the city gates, the public armory, and every official printing press in the capital.
He did not control breakfast.
Grey Gull Trading owned the riverside warehouse through which the First and Sixth Regiments expected their grain. Before Lucien’s men arrived, I transferred every sack onto barges and sent them east under flood-relief seals.
The Ninth Regiment’s horses stood in the cavalry yard we had purchased. Julian’s agents removed the feed, opened the rear paddocks, and replaced the stable master with an Ashbourne veteran.
An army bought with stolen gold still needed bread.
It still needed horses.
Lucien had forgotten that war was an account book before it became a battlefield.
He tried to correct the mistake with force. A squad reached the riverside warehouse carrying a seizure order, but its seal bore the same split claw as the false warrants. Grey Gull’s factor refused entry before twenty dockworkers and two magistrates. By the time Lucien sent a genuine officer, the grain was beyond the bridge.
Witnesses spread the story faster than any press could suppress it: the prince claiming to defend the Crown had arrived with a counterfeit lion.
We worked beneath the Bell & Briar while patrols searched the streets above us.
Julian opened the King’s commission before twelve captains summoned through the apothecary tunnels. Each inspected both seals. Each knelt.
The Blackthorn Guard had never formally existed in peacetime. It was a reserve of royal veterans, palace officers, and border riders bound to answer only a verified emergency commission.
By midnight, they were entering the city in twos and threes, disguised as carters, priests, and displaced merchants.
"We can retake the western gate," my father said over the map.
"Not yet," I replied. "Lucien still has enough loyal officers to turn a street battle into a civil war. We need him to commit treason where his own men can see it."
"And Adrian?" Queen Eleanor asked.
The Crown Prince remained in his sealed residence with Seraphina under guard. The royal physicians could slow the poison, but without Lucien’s counteragent they could not stop the damage.
"Lucien needs Adrian alive until he controls the palace," I said. "Then he will kill him and blame us."
The Queen’s face tightened, but she did not ask us to abandon the larger plan for her eldest son. She removed the key to the old chapel passage from her neck and set it on the map.
"Then make certain he reaches Adrian only when you are ready to follow."
Julian’s expression hardened. "So we let him believe the road is clear."
"After we take away the last person still willing to open Adrian’s door for him."
Seraphina needed the truth.
Not the version I remembered. Evidence she could touch.
Elias Wren’s wax fragment proved the royal seal had been copied, but a flaw was not enough. We needed the matrix that had made it.

The unsigned warrants from Lucien’s townhouse carried the same split-claw lion in their margins. On the back of one, beneath a layer of soot, Julian found an engraver’s mark: a hammer crossed with a key.
Only one royal metalworker used it.
Master Gideon Hollis had disappeared eight years earlier, three days after the order reached Seraphina’s mother.
In my first life, his name appeared once on a list of prisoners executed for counterfeiting the Crown seal. In this life, the prison register said he had died of fever.
The burial ledger said no body had been received.
"Lucien kept him," I said.
Grey Gull’s western townhouse contained a bricked cellar room. Julian’s men broke through the wall shortly before dawn.
They found Hollis alive.
He was thin, half-blind, and chained beside a workbench. Beneath a loose stone lay the copied lion matrix Lucien had forced him to cut.
Hollis identified Lucien’s former secretary as the man who commissioned it. He also produced a scrap of the original design, bearing payment marks from Rosemere.
Wren identified the matrix as the source of the seal on the Morcant order.
Julian fitted it into the impression taken from the surviving wax.
The split claw matched.
At last, Lucien’s perfect story had a hand, a tool, and a payment.
We made four certified packets. One stayed with Chief Auditor Marlowe. One went to Queen Eleanor. One traveled with Hollis and Wren under Blackthorn protection.
I took the fourth.
"If you enter Adrian’s residence, Lucien may be waiting," Julian said.
"I am not entering."
I gave the packet to Mara, the palace maid who had reported Adrian’s dream.
"Place it in Seraphina’s hands," I told her. "Tell her Lucien has the counteragent and the truth. She may save Adrian, save herself, or save neither. But she must choose knowing who killed her mother."
Mara concealed the packet beneath a tray of clean bandages.
By noon, it reached Seraphina.
She read Wren’s statement twice. She pressed the copied matrix into red wax and saw the broken lion claw. She read Hollis’s testimony and the payment trail from Rosemere.
Then she asked her guard for paper.
Her message to Lucien contained six words.
Bring the antidote. Tell me everything.
Lucien’s reply arrived within the hour.
There is no antidote for betrayal.
He knew.
Seraphina refused to put any more poison into Adrian’s medicine. When Lucien ordered her to open the residence to his men, she burned his message and barred the inner door.
It was not redemption.
It was the first honest choice she had made.
Lucien responded by arresting the palace guards’ families.
At dusk, his soldiers began forcing the outer gates of Adrian’s residence.
We let his spies see Blackthorn riders gathering beyond the western wall. We let them report that Julian and the Ashbournes had been trapped outside the city.
In truth, two hundred guards waited beneath the abandoned Chapel of Saint Orla, connected to the palace by a passage forgotten after the old civil war.
Julian fastened a dark breastplate over my coat.
"There is still time for you to remain with the Queen."
"I have remained behind walls in three lives."
"That was not what I meant."
His hands rested at my shoulders. For once, there was no jest between us.
"If this fails," he said, "I want you on the eastern road before dawn."
"If this fails, Lucien controls the eastern road."
"Evelyn."
I touched his face.
"You gave me a choice when every other prince gave me an order. Do not take it back now."
He closed his eyes against my palm, then turned and kissed it.
"Stay beside me, then."
Above us, thunder rolled across the capital.
Rain struck the chapel roof as Lucien’s men broke through the Crown Prince’s gate.
By the time Prince Lucien entered Adrian’s bedchamber with a drawn sword, he believed Julian’s army was still outside the walls.
