"In This Life, Believe Me" Chapter 4 — The Grave Where He Confessed
Chapter 4 — The Grave Where He Confessed
Natalie looked at the phone, then at my father.
"It isn’t mine."
Adrian sealed it inside an evidence bag.
"You told us Evelyn attacked you forty-eight hours ago."
"She did."
"The medical examiner just identified her remains. She has been dead for three years."
Natalie’s lips parted, but no sound came out.
My father took the identification card from Adrian. His thumb moved over my academy photograph as if he could touch the girl I had been.
"You said you saw her face," he said. "You said she spoke to you."
"I was frightened. Maybe it was someone who looked like her."
"And this?"
He raised my identification.
"I was organizing her things."
"You told me Evelyn took it when she disappeared."
Natalie backed into the wall.
Two uniformed officers reached the landing. Adrian ordered them to secure the house and read Natalie her rights.
Panic cracked her careful expression.
"You can’t arrest me because of a phone you found in Evie’s box. She could have planted it. You said she was capable of staging evidence."
"She was dead before that message was sent," Adrian said. "The timestamp on the torture video proves it."
That was not true. The message had been sent days earlier.
But Natalie did not know what the police had recovered.
"I only sent it once," she blurted. "I never contacted him after that."
Silence swallowed the hallway.
Adrian’s face emptied of emotion.
My father seemed to age ten years in one breath.
"You sent Kane her identity," he said.
Natalie covered her mouth.
"I didn’t know he would kill her."
"He was a drug trafficker who had ordered six murders. What did you think he would do—send her flowers?"
"She had everything!" Natalie shouted. "She had you, a badge, a future. She had Adrian looking at her as if no one else existed. I wanted one person to choose me first. Just once."
"So you decided to become her."
Owen looked through the open door of my bedroom. Natalie had replaced my photographs with her own, but she still slept beneath the quilt my mother made for me.
"You wore her clothes. You slept in her room. You called me Dad while my daughter’s bones sat unidentified in state storage."
His voice dropped.
"Do not call me that again."
Natalie struggled when the officers handcuffed her.
"Adrian, please. I love you. Everything I did was because I love you."
He did not look at her.
"Daniel Ruiz died because of you. Twelve officers died because of you. Evelyn died believing the people she loved had abandoned her."
The officers led Natalie down the stairs.
My father remained outside my room, holding my identification against his chest.
At headquarters, the search warrant opened the rest of Natalie’s digital life.
Investigators found photographs of my personnel file in a hidden cloud account, along with security logs proving she had used her analyst credentials to access Operation Breakwater after midnight. The first message exposed me. A second transfer, sent after Daniel’s death, contained the cover names of all twelve embedded officers.

Natalie had not made one jealous mistake.
She had watched Kane begin killing and sent him more names anyway.
Adrian stood behind the forensic analyst as each file appeared.
"Preserve the original metadata," he said. "Duplicate everything for the federal prosecutor."
His voice remained professional until my academy portrait appeared beside Natalie’s search history: Mercer family adoption, survivor benefits for fallen officers, how long until a missing person is declared dead.
Then he left the room and was sick in the stairwell.
"I have to go identify her," he whispered.
The state medical examiner’s office smelled of antiseptic and cold metal.
What remained of me rested beneath a white sheet. The bones recovered from the water had been arranged in anatomical order, with empty spaces where the Atlantic had kept pieces of me.
The examiner explained the fractures, the damaged finger bones, and the deep puncture in my femur.
My father signed the confirmation form with a shaking hand.
Then he touched the edge of my skull.
"Evie," he said. "Dad’s here."
I stood on the other side of the table.
"You’re late," I told him. "But you came."
He bowed his head.
"I’m sorry I didn’t believe you. I’m sorry I let you walk out of our house thinking you had disappointed me."
Adrian stared at my hands—or what remained of them.
He had signed the warrant while I scraped those bones against concrete and begged him to find me.
"We clear her name," he said. "Every report. Every database. Publicly."
Two weeks later, the department buried me with full honors.
The internal review had formally concluded that I remained undercover until my death, protected classified identities under torture, and died in the line of duty. My badge rested beneath folded flags. Daniel’s widow placed a white rose beside it.
After everyone left, my father sat before the headstone until darkness covered the cemetery.
He apologized for the slap, the warrant, and every message he had sent demanding that I surrender.
I sat beside him and rested my head against a shoulder I could no longer feel.
"I forgive you," I said.
He left after midnight.
Adrian emerged from beneath the trees only when my father’s car disappeared.
He knelt and placed the brass compass against my name.
"You told me you loved me on your twenty-fourth birthday," he said. "I lied when I told you I felt nothing."
My breath caught, though I had no lungs.
"I was your father’s subordinate. I was nine years older. I thought people would use me to diminish everything you earned. I thought rejecting you was the honorable choice."
His hand closed over the compass.
"The truth is, I was afraid. And you paid for my fear."
I reached for him. My fingers passed through his hair.
"Too late," I whispered.
Adrian pressed his forehead to the stone.
"If there is another life, let me be the one who finds you."
Light broke through my translucent hands.
For three years, fury and unfinished love had held me to this world. Now my name was clean. Natalie could no longer steal my life. My father knew the truth, and Adrian had finally given me the answer I once wanted more than anything.
It did not heal what happened.
But it released me.
The cemetery dissolved into white light.
Adrian’s voice followed me into the dark.
Then I opened my eyes to twenty-four candles burning on a birthday cake.
