"After Our Tenth Canceled Wedding, I Walked Away" Chapter 8 — The Boy Who Was Never His
Chapter 8 — The Boy Who Was Never His
Julian refused to believe it.
"Noah is my son."
He stood in Rachel's conference room three days later, gripping the back of a chair while his attorney reviewed the sealed records.
Evelyn had not invited him out of kindness. His cooperation was necessary to establish whether Serena had falsified information connected to Crosswell's proposed family trust.
Rachel placed two options before him.
"You can consent to a private DNA test, or we can seek a court order based on the conflicting records and suspected fraud. Nothing will be released publicly."
Julian looked at Evelyn. "Is humiliating a four-year-old part of your revenge now?"
"Noah is not on trial. Serena used his identity in forged corporate documents. I am protecting him by keeping this sealed."
"You want him not to be mine."
"What I want cannot change his DNA."
Julian signed.
The result arrived forty-eight hours later.
Probability of paternity: 0.00%.
He read the line repeatedly, as though persistence might rearrange it.
"Run it again."
"The laboratory tested the second sample independently," Rachel said. "The result is conclusive."
Julian lowered himself into a chair.
For four years, he had attended secret birthdays, paid private-school deposits, and built his decisions around the heir he believed Evelyn could never give him.
"Caleb Rowe," he whispered.
Rachel nodded. "The available records identify him as the likely father. A separate test would be required to prove it."
Julian drove to Serena's townhouse before his attorney could stop him.
He entered with the code he had used for years and heard her arguing on the phone.
"Crosswell froze every card," she hissed. "I can't pay you until I move money out of the trust."
A man's voice crackled through the speaker.
"There is no trust now. Take Noah and leave before the cops connect Reed to me."
"Julian still thinks Noah is his. As long as I have the boy, he won't abandon me."
Julian stepped into the room.
Serena dropped the phone.
"How long?"
She looked at the DNA report in his hand and stopped pretending.
"Julian, listen—"
"How long have you known?"
"Since before he was born."
The admission struck more cleanly than a blow.
"You built four years of my life on a lie."
"And what did you build Evelyn's life on?"
"This is not about her."
"Everything is about her now that you know she's rich."
Julian swept a crystal bowl from the table. It shattered against the wall.
Serena flinched but did not retreat.
"You slept with me because you wanted to," she said. "You canceled those weddings because keeping both of us made you feel powerful. You signed the hospital form because you had already decided Evelyn's child mattered less. I lied about Noah, but I never controlled your hands."
"You drugged me the first night."
"And what about every night after that?"

He had no answer.
Noah appeared at the top of the stairs, clutching a stuffed shark.
"Dad?"
Julian looked up. The boy's frightened face demolished what remained of his anger.
Whatever the report said, Noah had called him Dad for as long as he could speak.
Julian set the DNA pages facedown.
"Go back to your room, buddy. Your mom and I are talking."
After the child disappeared, Julian lowered his voice.
"You will not use him again. Family counsel will arrange temporary care while this is investigated."
"You can't take my son."
"I am not taking him. I am making sure he isn't in the car when Caleb decides to run."
Serena's face changed. "You wouldn't turn me in."
"You mistook cowardice for loyalty."
He left the townhouse and gave his attorney the recording he had made on his phone. It did not absolve him. It did connect Serena and Caleb to Dr. Reed.
Minutes after Julian left, Caleb arrived through the garage. Police surveillance captured him loading two suitcases and a lockbox into Serena's car. When officers approached, he ran, leaving the lockbox behind.
Inside were prepaid phones, copies of Evelyn's old signatures, and a flash drive containing altered hospital forms. One message from Serena instructed Caleb to make the aquarium collision "look frightening but leave Noah untouched." Another told him Dr. Reed would "handle Evelyn once Julian signed."
Serena was arrested before midnight. Child services did not take Noah to a public shelter; Rachel had already contacted Serena's older sister and arranged for a child advocate to attend. Evelyn refused to let the boy become collateral damage in a spectacle created by adults.
Julian watched from across the street as Noah left with his aunt. He raised one hand, but the boy did not see him through the car window.
For the first time, the loss Julian felt could not be blamed on Evelyn's wealth, Adrian's influence, or Serena's deception. He had built a home on secrets because exposing them would have required him to choose.
That night, Evelyn stood on the balcony of her hotel suite, watching traffic move along the river.
Adrian joined her but kept a respectful distance.
"Julian's attorney delivered the recording," he said. "Caleb's accounts have been flagged."
"Good."
"You don't sound satisfied."
"A child just learned that every adult around him lied. There isn't much to celebrate."
Adrian handed her a mug of tea.
"You protected him when it would have been easier to use him against Serena."
"He didn't kill my child."
The words left Evelyn hollow. Adrian waited without trying to fill the silence.
"Why did you really stay in Chicago?" she asked.
"You know why."
"I want to hear you say it without reporters around."
Adrian looked down at the river.
"Because I loved you. Because I was arrogant enough to think Julian would disappoint you in six months, then too worried to leave when six months became eight years."
"You funded Crosswell."
"I funded your proposal. I never bought a claim on you."
"And now?"
"Now I help when you ask. I stop when you say stop. What you choose after that belongs to you."
Her phone rang before she could answer.
Julian's name filled the screen.
She almost declined, then saw his message beneath it.
One final conversation. No Serena. No lawyers. Then I will sign whatever the board needs.
Evelyn showed Adrian the screen.
"You don't owe him closure," Adrian said.
"No," she replied. "But I want mine."
