Chapter 7 — The Signature She Forged

Rachel opened the evidence envelope and placed three reports beside Serena's documents.

"The questioned signature was examined this afternoon," she said. "It was traced from a shareholder consent Evelyn signed two years ago. The hesitation marks and identical pen lifts appear in both forged transfer orders."

She tapped the first report, then displayed an email header on the screen.

"The files were created on Serena Vale's laptop at 2:14 a.m. yesterday and sent to a printer registered at Julian Cross's residence."

Within the first minute, Serena's confident expression collapsed.

"That's impossible."

"The bank agrees with you on one point," Rachel said. "The transfers never happened. The account numbers lead to dormant entities opened with copies of your identification."

Naomi Bennett turned to Serena. "You forged Evelyn's signature, then built false evidence to accuse her of stealing from Crosswell?"

"No. Julian gave me those papers."

Julian stared at her. "You told me you found them in Evelyn's desk."

"Because you wouldn't listen when I warned you about her!"

Evelyn slid the original consent across the table. A faint indentation crossed the page where someone had traced the letters.

"You didn't expose a thief," she said. "You manufactured one."

Serena backed toward the door, but hotel security blocked it.

"You can't hold me here."

"No one is holding you," Rachel said. "You may leave. If you take the originals, destroy anything on your phone, or contact Dr. Reed, that will be included in our preservation filing."

Serena looked at Julian. "Tell them you authorized me to investigate."

The directors turned toward him.

Julian's face had gone gray. "I authorized a review of Evelyn's communications. I did not authorize forgery."

"You gave me access to the house. You gave me her old files. You said you needed something strong enough to make her sign the new voting agreement."

"I never told you to fabricate evidence."

"You didn't ask how I got it. That isn't the same as not knowing."

For eight years, Julian had rewarded Serena whenever her lies solved a problem for him. Now he looked offended that she had learned the lesson so well.

Evelyn turned to Miles. "Call the vote."

Julian stood. "You cannot remove the founder of this company because of something Serena did."

"You're not being permanently removed tonight," Naomi said. "The motion concerns temporary suspension pending an independent investigation."

"If I leave, the financing round collapses."

"The financing round is already at risk," Evelyn replied. "You assaulted a major shareholder, used company personnel to confine her, and attempted to benefit from a forged transfer. Remaining in control makes the risk worse."

The vote appeared on the screen one name at a time.

Five in favor.

One abstention.

Julian was suspended as chief executive, effective immediately.

His access badge deactivated before the meeting adjourned. A security notification appeared on his phone, followed by alerts that his corporate email, expense account, and executive approval credentials had been frozen. The authority he had treated as personal property vanished through the same systems Evelyn had once built for him.

He remained standing after the resolution passed. "You promised you would help me build something no one could take away."

"I kept that promise," Evelyn said. "You were the one who tried to take it from me."

The board appointed Miles interim CEO and retained an outside forensic firm. Evelyn then introduced a second resolution.

"Crosswell's employees did not choose any of this. Payroll continues. Customer support continues. No one below the executive level loses a job because Julian and Serena believed my work belonged to them."

Naomi studied her. "How do you propose to protect operations with our financing delayed?"

"I will place my shares in a voting trust supervised by independent counsel for thirty days. Shaw Capital will provide a bridge facility on market terms, with no transfer of control. Hartwell will not be a party."

Julian laughed bitterly. "So Adrian gets the company after all."

"No. The employees get time. The customers get continuity. And the board gets an investigation no one in my family can manipulate."

The second resolution passed unanimously.

Julian closed the folder in front of him. "What happens to me while your investigators tear through eight years of my life?"

"Your salary is suspended, but your health coverage remains active during the investigation," Naomi said. "You are prohibited from accessing company systems or contacting employees about their testimony."

"Evelyn still has access."

"Evelyn volunteered to place her operational credentials in escrow," Rachel replied. "Until the audit is complete, she will exercise only the shareholder rights specified by counsel."

That silenced the accusation that she had engineered the meeting to seize Julian's office.

Evelyn gathered the false invoices into a clear evidence sleeve. "Miles, send every employee a notice before rumors reach them. Tell them payroll is protected and no one is required to speak to the media. Establish an anonymous channel for anyone who received unusual instructions from Julian or Serena."

"I'll have it live within the hour."

"And revoke all residential security assignments. Crosswell employees protect company facilities, not an executive's private relationship."

Miles nodded, shame visible in his face. "I should have questioned that order."

"Then question the next one. That's how we repair it."

Serena left before the meeting ended. At the elevator, two detectives were waiting to request her phone and ask about the forged documents. She refused both and called an attorney.

By morning, the outside investigators had preserved Crosswell's servers. The hospital had also delivered access logs showing that Dr. Reed entered with a temporary badge requested by a contractor Serena had paid three times in the previous month.

Evelyn sat at the desk in her hotel suite while Rachel built a timeline across three monitors.

"The recording from your ring is clear," Rachel said. "Serena admits Noah was never in danger. Reed's name, the false emergency, Julian's knowledge—it is all there."

"And the drug?"

"Your bloodwork shows a sedative not ordered by your attending physician. We still need the miscarriage reviewed by an independent specialist before anyone makes a causal claim."

Evelyn nodded. She wanted the truth, not a convenient version of it.

Adrian entered with coffee and placed it beside her without interrupting.

Rachel opened another file. "There is one more problem. Noah's hospital registration listed him as type O positive. The pediatric records produced this morning list B positive."

"A clerical error?" Evelyn asked.

"Possibly. But Serena and Julian are both documented as type A, and several identity fields in Noah's file were altered after his birth. It doesn't prove parentage. It does justify verifying who supplied the original information."

Evelyn looked at Noah's school photograph clipped to the file.

"Keep the child out of the press."

"Agreed. We can seek sealed records through family counsel."

Adrian leaned against the desk. "I found the owner of the car Serena claimed was involved in the accident. It belongs to Caleb Rowe."

Rachel searched the payment ledger.

The same name appeared beside a consulting company that had transferred money to Dr. Reed.

Evelyn stared at the screen.

"Who is Caleb Rowe?"

Adrian's expression darkened.

"The man who was living with Serena when Noah was born."
