"After Our Tenth Canceled Wedding, I Walked Away" Chapter 2 — The Son He Hid
Chapter 2 — The Son He Hid
Evelyn stood halfway down the staircase, unable to breathe.
She had been pregnant three times during the hardest years of Crosswell's rise.
The first time, Julian had held her hand in a free clinic and promised they would have a family when they could afford heat that worked. The second time, he had said investors would abandon them if he lost focus. The third time, Evelyn had been working eighteen-hour days and vomiting blood from stress.
Each time, he had kissed her knuckles and called the sacrifice temporary.
Each time, she had believed him.
Now Serena's child was four.
Four years ago, Evelyn had been negotiating Crosswell's first national contract while Julian had been building a second family.
Below, a lighter clicked in Julian's hand.
"I promised Evelyn I'd marry her," he said. "She stayed when I had nothing."
For one weak heartbeat, relief tried to rise.
Then he continued.
"Serena says she doesn't need a title as long as she and Noah can stay close. I'll transfer Evelyn's voting shares to a trust for Serena and the boy. That should protect them."
Diane gave an approving hum.
"Half of Crosswell is far too much for Evelyn. She isn't even part of your world anymore."
"The transfer documents are ready," Julian said. "Once she signs, I'll introduce Noah properly. By then, she'll have no company, no income of her own, and nowhere else to go. She'll be angry, but she'll adjust."
Nausea burned Evelyn's throat.
He was not merely unfaithful. He had studied her loyalty and turned it into a weapon.
"How long have you been planning that?"
The room fell silent.
Julian looked up. Color drained from his face when he saw her on the stairs.
"Evelyn. How much did you hear?"
"Enough."
He came toward her. "Noah was an accident. Serena and I were an accident. None of it changes what you and I have."
Evelyn stepped away from his hand.
"Our children were problems we couldn't afford. Hers was an accident you gave a house, a trust fund, and four birthdays."
"It wasn't like that."
"Then explain it."
Julian's silence was the explanation.
Evelyn descended the final steps and faced him.
"The voting shares stay with me. Every share attached to my name stays with me."
His shame vanished behind the cold authority he used in boardrooms.
"Think carefully. You live in my house. Your cards are linked to my accounts. If you turn this into a war, you will lose more than stock."
"This house was purchased after I personally guaranteed Crosswell's first credit line. And the company account you call yours existed because I brought in the clients who funded it."
Diane laughed. "A woman doesn't need that much control over a technology company. People already say those shares are the only reason Julian hasn't left you."
"Eight years ago, I paid his tuition balance and worked nights to fund the prototype," Evelyn said. "No one thought I was beneath him then."

Diane's mouth tightened.
Serena entered wearing a red coat, as polished as if she had not arrived at a wedding drenched in rain the day before.
"If Evelyn needs the shares to feel secure, let her keep them," she said. "I love Julian, not his company."
She slipped her arm through his.
"But Noah is waiting for his father. You promised him a birthday at the aquarium."
Julian glanced at Evelyn.
"Stay here and calm down. When I come back, we'll discuss what it means to be my wife and what it means to become my enemy."
"I'm not your wife."
"Not yet."
He left with Serena, their fingers interlaced.
The instant the front door closed, Evelyn returned to her study and called Adrian.
"I need the attorney you used for the Shaw Capital proxy fight."
His teasing tone disappeared. "What happened?"
"Julian intends to strip my voting rights and transfer my interest to Serena."
"Can he?"
"Not legally. But I helped write the operating agreement, and I know where he may try to create leverage."
She opened her laptop and forwarded the recordings, stock certificates, tax records, and security footage to a new legal team.
"I want an independent audit. Freeze any transfer request carrying my name. Preserve the corporate email server before Julian realizes what I'm doing."
Adrian was quiet for a moment.
"Welcome back, Evie."
"I'm not back yet."
"No. But that sounded like the Evelyn Hart I remember."
By late afternoon, attorney Rachel Monroe appeared on Evelyn's screen. She confirmed that Julian could not lawfully transfer Evelyn's shares without her authenticated consent. More importantly, the security team's refusal to let Evelyn leave could support a claim of unlawful restraint.
"Do not warn him about the audit," Rachel advised. "Let him keep believing you're trapped."
Evelyn looked at the locked front gate through her study window.
"For the first time in eight years, we agree on strategy."
That evening, a sharp pain twisted through her lower abdomen.
She tried water, medication for the stomach condition she had battled for years, and a heating pad. Nothing helped. By nine, she could barely stand.
She called Julian.
Children sang "Happy Birthday" in the background when he answered.
"What?"
"I'm in severe pain. I need to go to the hospital, and your guards won't let me leave."
"This again?"
"Julian, listen to me."
"I know what you're doing. You think if you ruin Noah's birthday, I'll come running and forget the shares."
Another cramp folded her against the bed.
"I am not bargaining. I need medical help."
"You chose this fight, Evelyn. If you want to stay in my life, you will accept Serena and my son."
His son.
"You ended three pregnancies because you said we couldn't raise a child," she whispered. "But you could raise hers."
"Your doctors said another pregnancy was unlikely. Was I supposed to let the Cross family end because of romance?"
The call disconnected.
Evelyn pressed the emergency function on her phone before her vision went dark.
When she woke, she was in a hospital bed. Julian sat beside her, elbows on his knees.
For the first time since the wedding, he looked shaken.
"The pain wasn't your stomach," he said.
Evelyn's hand moved instinctively to her abdomen.
Julian swallowed.
"You're pregnant."
