"She Showed Her True Colors… She Had No Idea I Was Faking My Paralysis" Part 4
After Vanessa left, the Whitmore Estate settled into a strange new rhythm.
The reporters eventually thinned out. The flower deliveries stopped. The stream of sympathetic messages from people Ethan barely knew slowed to almost nothing.
Claire stayed.
Every morning at seven, she opened the curtains in his downstairs room without asking whether he was awake.
Every morning, Ethan pretended not to notice how normal she made everything feel.
She never hovered.
Never spoke to him in that careful, overly gentle voice people had started using since the accident.
She never pushed the wheelchair unless he asked.
If he dropped something, she didn't rush across the room as if he had become helpless.
She simply looked at him and said, "Do you want help?"
Most of the time, Ethan said no.
Claire accepted that answer.
It surprised him how much that mattered.
One morning, Ethan found a stack of financial reports waiting on the desk in the library.
Beside them sat a cup of black coffee.
Claire was across the room opening the shutters.
"You remembered."
She looked over her shoulder.
"That you drink it black?"
"That I hate sugar in the morning."
"I've worked here six years, Mr. Whitmore."
"Ethan."
Claire paused.
He immediately wondered why he'd said it.
She had called him Mr. Whitmore from the day she'd started at the estate.
"You can call me Ethan."
Her expression became cautious.
"I don't think that's necessary."
"Neither is pretending I don't have a first name."
A faint smile touched her mouth.
"All right."
She picked up an empty glass from the side table.
"Ethan."
For some reason, hearing his name from her sounded different.
More honest.
She turned to leave.
"Claire."
"Yes?"
"Do you ever take a day off?"
That smile disappeared.
"Sometimes."
"That sounded convincing."
"I took Christmas morning off last year."
"It's October."
"I know."
Ethan stared at her.
"That's not a normal answer."
Claire shrugged.
"Normal depends on what your bills look like."
The words were casual, but something in her face closed immediately afterward.
Ethan noticed.
He had started noticing far too much.
The tiredness around her eyes.
The way she checked her phone whenever she thought no one was watching.
The way her shoulders tensed every time it rang.
The fact that she had begun accepting extra shifts when another member of the household staff called out.
Two days later, Ethan found her in the kitchen at nearly ten at night.
She was packing food into a small plastic container.
"You're still here."
Claire jumped.
Then pressed a hand to her chest.
"You scared me."
"Sorry."
He wheeled himself closer.
"I thought your shift ended at eight."
"It did."
"Then why are you still working?"
"I'm not."
She snapped the lid onto the container.
"I'm taking this home."
Ethan glanced at the food.
Pasta. Chicken. Vegetables.
Nothing unusual.
"Long drive?"
"About an hour with traffic."
"Queens?"
Claire looked at him.
"How did you know?"
"I heard one of the drivers mention it."
She nodded.
"Queens."
"You commute all the way from Queens every day?"
"Rent in Greenwich isn't exactly designed for housekeepers."
There was no bitterness in her voice.
Only fact.
Ethan leaned back slightly.
"Do you live alone?"
Claire hesitated.
Then she looked down at the container.
"No."
The silence stretched.
Ethan had the strange feeling that if he asked one question too many, she would retreat completely.
So he kept his voice light.
"Family?"
"My daughter."
Ethan blinked.
"You have a daughter?"
Claire smiled.
A real smile this time.
It changed her entire face.
"Yes."
"How old?"
"Nine."
"What's her name?"
"Sophie."
Something flickered behind Claire's eyes as she said it.
Love first.
Then worry.
So fast Ethan almost convinced himself he had imagined the second part.
"Sophie Bennett."
"Does she look like you?"
Claire laughed quietly.
"She thinks she doesn't."
"That usually means she does."
"She has my eyes. Everything else is her father."
The smile weakened.
Ethan noticed that too.
"Does he live with you?"
Claire's fingers tightened around the food container.
"No."
The answer was final.
Ethan immediately regretted asking.
"I'm sorry."
"It's been a few years."
She gave him a polite smile.
"We're okay."
He almost asked more.
Almost.
But Claire glanced at the clock.
"I should go."
"Of course."
She reached for her bag.
"Good night, Ethan."
"Good night, Claire."
He watched her leave through the service entrance.
For the rest of the evening, the name stayed with him.
Sophie.
At nine years old, Ethan had been sent to a private school where his biggest concern was whether his father would let him spend the weekend at a classmate's lake house.
Claire's nine-year-old daughter was growing up an hour away, while her mother worked twelve-hour days inside a mansion where one guest bathroom probably cost more than their annual rent.
The thought made him uncomfortable.
Not because he had done anything wrong.
At least, that was what he told himself.
The next afternoon, Claire was setting out lunch when her phone vibrated in her apron pocket.
She looked at the screen.
For a second, all the color disappeared from her face.
"You can answer it," Ethan said.
"It's fine."
"It doesn't look fine."
She silenced the call.
"I'll call back later."
"Claire."
She looked at him.
"If it's your daughter, answer it."
"It's not Sophie."
"Then whoever it is seems important."
Her jaw tightened.
"My mother."
"Answer."
She hesitated before walking into the hallway.
Ethan didn't try to listen.
He focused on the plate in front of him.
But less than a minute later, Claire returned.
Her face was composed again.
Too composed.
"Everything okay?"
"Yes."
"You don't look okay."
"I'm fine."
It was the kind of answer people gave when they desperately wanted the conversation to end.

So Ethan let it end.
But that night, he couldn't sleep.
He blamed the mattress.
Then the storm outside.
Then the email from the board waiting unanswered on his phone.
At 12:14 a.m., he gave up and moved into the hallway.
A dim light burned near the service wing.
Ethan remembered the night he had heard Claire crying there before.
He told himself he wasn't looking for her.
Then he heard her voice.
Quiet.
Broken.
Coming from the laundry room.
"Mom, I know."
Ethan stopped.
The door was nearly closed.
He should have kept moving.
He knew that.
Instead, he froze.
Claire's voice trembled.
"I talked to the hospital again today."
A pause.
"No, they won't schedule it without the deposit."
Ethan's grip tightened around the wheelchair rims.
Hospital?
Inside the room, Claire sniffed.
"I asked about another payment plan. They said we've already exhausted the options."
Another pause.
Ethan felt something cold move through his chest.
Claire whispered, "I know what the doctor said."
Her mother's voice was too faint for Ethan to hear.
Claire's answer came quickly.
"No."
Silence.
"No, Mom. I'm not asking him."
Ethan's heart beat harder.
Him.
"Because I can't."
A pause.
Then Claire's voice sharpened.
"He just lost everything. I won't turn the worst moment of his life into an opportunity for me."
Ethan stopped breathing.
For several seconds, the only sound in the hallway was the hum of the heating system.
Claire continued.
"I know he still has more than we do."
Her voice cracked.
"That's not the point."
Another pause.
"No. I'm not going to walk into his room and say, 'I know you may never walk again, but could you pay for my daughter's surgery?'"
Ethan stared at the floor.
Something inside him twisted violently.
Daughter.
Surgery.
Sophie.
Claire began crying again.
She tried to keep it quiet.
"I've called every foundation on the list."
A pause.
"The children's fund said six weeks."
Another pause.
"We don't have six weeks."
Ethan closed his eyes.
He suddenly hated the wheelchair beneath him.
Claire's mother's voice rose faintly through the phone.
Ethan caught only one word.
Spine.
Claire answered immediately.
"I understand what happens if it gets worse."
Her voice broke completely.
"I understand."
Ethan felt sick.
He wanted to move away.
He couldn't.
Claire took a shaky breath.
"The specialist said the compression is progressing."
A pause.
"She fell again yesterday."
Ethan's eyes opened.
Claire covered a sob.
"She told me she tripped because she doesn't want me to worry."
Another pause.
"She's nine years old, Mom. She shouldn't be protecting me."
Ethan stared at his own legs.
Strong.
Healthy.
Perfectly capable of standing.
He could get out of the chair right now.
He could walk into the laundry room.
He could tell Claire the truth.
Instead, he sat there listening to a mother break apart over a child who might actually lose what he was pretending had been taken from him.
Claire's voice dropped almost to a whisper.
"The doctor said if we do the surgery now, there's a good chance she can recover normally."
Ethan swallowed.
"And if we wait..."
Claire couldn't finish.
Her mother said something.
Claire shook her head even though Diane couldn't see her.
"No."
A long silence.
Then she whispered the sentence that made Ethan's stomach drop.
"If I don't find the money by Friday, Sophie could lose her chance to walk normally."
Ethan looked down at the blanket covering his legs.
His lie suddenly felt filthy.
The staged accident.
The fake diagnosis.
The calculated silence.
All of it.
He had turned walking into a weapon to test whether a woman loved him.
A nine-year-old girl was fighting for the real thing.
Inside the laundry room, Claire whispered, "I'll figure something out."
Ethan heard the exhaustion in her voice.
Then the stubbornness.
"I always do."
He backed away before she could open the door.
His hands shook against the wheels.
By the time he reached his room, his breathing was uneven.
He locked the door behind him.
Then he stood.
The motion took less than a second.
No pain.
No weakness.
No miracle.
He simply rose from the wheelchair and walked across the room.
For the first time since the lie began, Ethan couldn't look at his own reflection.
On the desk, his phone lit up.
A message from Michael.
Ethan picked it up with trembling fingers.
Then typed only six words.
"I need to know everything about Sophie."
