"She Showed Her True Colors… She Had No Idea I Was Faking My Paralysis" Part 2
For three days, Ethan Whitmore tried to talk himself out of it.
By the fourth, he was sitting across from Dr. Michael Grant in a private office at NewYork-Presbyterian, listening to his best friend explain exactly how insane the plan was.
"You understand that fake car accidents are usually the kind of thing people regret?"
Ethan leaned back in the chair.
"We're not faking an accident."
Michael stared at him.
"We're staging a crash scene, arranging a private ambulance transfer, falsifying the public version of your injuries, and letting the entire city believe you may be permanently disabled."
Ethan lifted an eyebrow.
"When you say it like that, it sounds bad."
"It is bad."
Michael threw the folder onto his desk.
"Ethan, this isn't one of your corporate negotiations. You don't get to manipulate reality and then act surprised when people react to the lie."
"I need an answer."
"You already have doubts. That's an answer."
"No. Doubt is not proof."
Michael studied him for a long moment.
"And if she passes?"
Ethan's expression softened.
"Then I spend the rest of my life apologizing for doubting her."
"And if she doesn't?"
Ethan looked toward the window.
"Then I find out before I marry her."
Michael swore under his breath.
But he had known Ethan long enough to recognize the expression on his face.
The decision had already been made.
Two days later, a black SUV sat twisted against a guardrail on a quiet road in the Hudson Valley.
Rain slicked the pavement.
The driver's side door had been crushed inward just enough to look terrifying without ever having endangered Ethan.
Broken glass glittered across the shoulder.
A second vehicle, driven by someone Michael trusted, waited out of sight.
Within minutes, the first emergency call went out.
By the time local police arrived, Ethan was already strapped to a stretcher, his eyes closed, his face pale beneath carefully placed bruising.
Michael rode with him in the ambulance.
"This is your last chance," he murmured.
Ethan kept his eyes shut.
"Too late."
"You can still stop it."
"No."
Michael looked at his friend and shook his head.
"I hope she's worth what this is going to cost you."
Ethan didn't answer.
Because for the first time, he was beginning to wonder whether Michael meant money.
By noon, the story had exploded across New York.
Financial networks interrupted their regular programming.
Business reporters stood outside Whitmore Holdings headquarters on Park Avenue.
News alerts lit up phones from Wall Street to Greenwich.
WHITMORE HEIR IN SERIOUS HUDSON VALLEY CRASH.
ETHAN WHITMORE HOSPITALIZED AFTER HIGHWAY ACCIDENT.
WHITMORE HEIR MAY NEVER WALK AGAIN.
Whitmore Holdings shares dropped within the hour.
Ethan watched the coverage from a private hospital suite with the sound turned low.
His legs lay motionless beneath a white blanket.
Every monitor around him was real.
The IV was real.
The concern in Michael's eyes was real.
Only the paralysis was not.
A nurse opened the door.
"Dr. Grant, Ms. Sterling is here."
Michael looked at Ethan.
Ethan's pulse jumped.
"Send her in."
Vanessa entered so quickly that one heel nearly caught against the doorframe.
Her hair was pulled back. Her makeup was minimal. Her eyes were red.
For one second, Ethan forgot the plan.
"Ethan."
She rushed to the bed.
"Oh my God."
She grabbed his hand in both of hers and bent over him.
"What happened? They wouldn't tell me anything."
"I'm okay."
"Don't say that."
Her voice broke.
"You're lying in a hospital bed."
Ethan stared at her face.
There were tears.
Real tears.
His chest tightened.
Maybe Michael had been right.
Maybe this entire thing had been cruel and unnecessary.
Vanessa pressed his hand against her cheek.
"I thought you were dead."
"I'm not."
"Don't ever scare me like that again."
He almost laughed.
Instead, he lifted his hand and touched her face.
"I'm sorry."
Vanessa closed her eyes.
For a moment, she looked exactly like the woman he had wanted her to be.
Not Vanessa Sterling, daughter of a powerful family.
Not the woman planning a wedding designed for magazine covers.
Just his fiancée.
Just scared.
Just relieved he was alive.
"I'm not going anywhere," she whispered.
Then she turned as flashes exploded beyond the hospital room window.
Reporters had gathered in the hallway outside the restricted floor.
Security pushed them back.
Vanessa straightened immediately.
A camera caught her standing beside Ethan's bed.
Another captured her wiping tears from her face.
Someone shouted from the hall.
"Vanessa! Are you staying with him?"
She stepped toward the doorway.
Michael started to stop her.
Ethan shook his head.
Vanessa faced the cameras.
"I'm not going anywhere."
Her voice was steady despite the tears.
"Ethan is the man I love. Whatever happens next, we're facing it together."
Questions erupted.
"Is the wedding still happening?"
"Will Ethan return to Whitmore Holdings?"
"Is it true he may be permanently disabled?"
Vanessa's face tightened.
"That's enough."
Security closed the door.
For several seconds, no one spoke.
Ethan felt something dangerously close to shame.
Maybe he had been wrong about her.
Maybe one cruel comment about a wedding and one ugly moment with Claire had poisoned his judgment.
Maybe people were complicated.
Maybe love deserved more trust than this.
Vanessa returned to the bed.
"You heard me."
"I did."
"I meant it."
Ethan squeezed her hand.
"I believe you."
Michael looked away.
The next morning, everything changed.
Vanessa arrived shortly after nine with coffee she didn't drink and sunglasses she never took off.
Michael entered ten minutes later carrying a tablet.
His expression was carefully grave.
Ethan recognized the performance.
Vanessa didn't.
"Sit down," Michael said.
Her mouth tightened.
"I am sitting."
Michael pulled a chair closer anyway.
"We've completed the neurological assessment."
Vanessa looked at Ethan.
"And?"
Michael paused.
"There is significant trauma to the lower spine."
Her fingers tightened around Ethan's hand.
"We're still evaluating long-term outcomes."
"What does that mean?"
"It means we don't know how much function he'll recover."
Vanessa stared at him.
"How much?"
Michael met her eyes.
"There is a real possibility Ethan may never walk again."
The room went silent.
Vanessa's face drained of color.
Ethan watched her carefully.
Her grip remained firm.
For several seconds.
Then loosened.
Just slightly.
She swallowed.
"Never?"
"We can't say with absolute certainty."
"But you're saying it's possible."
"Yes."
Vanessa looked down at Ethan's legs beneath the blanket.
Her eyes stayed there longer than he expected.
Ethan waited.
He expected her to ask whether he was in pain.
Whether he was scared.
Whether rehabilitation might help.
Instead, she looked back at Michael.
"What does this mean for the company?"
Ethan felt something inside him shift.
Michael didn't react.
"That's not really a medical question."
"But you know him."
"I do."
"If he's in a wheelchair, can he still run Whitmore Holdings?"
Ethan spoke quietly.
"Vanessa."
She turned to him.
"I'm thinking about you."
"Are you?"
"Of course I am."
Michael glanced at Ethan before continuing.
"The board has already been discussing temporary leadership arrangements."
Vanessa stared at him.
"Temporary?"
"Possibly longer."
"What does longer mean?"
"Ethan may need months of rehabilitation."
"And if he doesn't recover?"
Michael hesitated.
"He may decide to step away from day-to-day management."
Vanessa stood.
"You mean resign?"
"No one said resign."
"Then what are you saying?"
Ethan watched her pace toward the window.
Below them, reporters crowded the sidewalk.
Michael continued.
"The market is reacting badly. The stock is down again this morning."
Vanessa turned sharply.
"How badly?"
Ethan's stomach tightened.
She hadn't asked whether he would ever feel his legs again.
She had asked how badly the stock was falling.
Michael gave her the number.
Vanessa's lips parted.
"That much?"
"It's been volatile."
"And the board?"
"Concerned."
"What about the lenders?"
Ethan finally spoke.
"Vanessa."
She looked at him.
"What?"
"I'm right here."
Her face softened immediately.
"I know."
"Do you want to ask me anything?"
She hesitated.
That hesitation hurt more than any answer.
"Are you scared?"
It sounded added.
Inserted.
As if she had suddenly realized which question she was supposed to ask.
"Yes," Ethan said.
Vanessa returned to the chair.
She touched his hand again.
But this time her fingers rested lightly against his.
Not gripping.
Not holding.
Just touching.
Her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
"My mother."
She silenced it.
Thirty seconds later, it rang again.
Then again.
Vanessa stood.
"I need to take this."
"Go ahead."
She stepped into the hallway.
Through the partially closed door, Ethan could hear pieces of the conversation.
"No, we don't know yet."
A pause.
"I understand."
Another pause.
"No, don't cancel anything."
Ethan looked at Michael.
Michael's jaw tightened.
Vanessa lowered her voice, but Ethan still heard the next sentence.
"We can't have vendors pulling out because they think there's no money."
Ethan looked away.
Michael crossed his arms.
"You wanted proof."
"Not yet."
"Ethan."
"Not yet."
When Vanessa returned, she was smiling.
Too carefully.
"Everything okay?" Ethan asked.
"Fine."
"Your mother worried about me?"
Vanessa paused.
"Of course."
"What did she say?"
"That everyone is praying for you."
Ethan almost asked whether everyone included the florist.
He didn't.
Over the next two days, Vanessa visited less.
First she blamed photographers.
Then a meeting with her family's attorneys.
Then exhaustion.
When she did come, she spent more time on her phone than beside him.
Her questions changed.
"What happens to your voting shares if you step back?"
"Will the Greenwich house stay in the family?"
"Would the board freeze the distributions?"
"Do you think your father left any protections in the trust?"
Ethan answered as vaguely as possible.
With every answer, he watched something disappear from her face.
On the fourth night, Vanessa didn't come at all.
At 10:42 p.m., Ethan's phone rang.
Her name appeared on the screen.
He stared at it before answering.
"Hey."
"Hi."
Her voice sounded distant.
"Are you home?"
"I'm at my apartment."
"You said you'd come by."
"I know. Today got complicated."
"Everything seems complicated lately."
Silence.
Ethan looked out at Manhattan glowing beyond the hospital window.
"Vanessa?"
"I'm here."
"What is it?"
She exhaled.
"My mother thinks we need to talk about practical things."
"What practical things?"
"The future."
Ethan's grip tightened around the phone.
"Our future?"
"Everything."
Another silence.
Then she said it.
Slowly.
Carefully.
As if she had practiced the wording before calling.
"If your life really changed forever… what happens to our wedding?"
