"A Hundred Messages Too Late" Part 9 — The Recording from the Night We Lost Her
Part 9 — The Recording from the Night We Lost Her
Adrian stayed at the edge of my life.
He never entered Echo House without an appointment. He never sent flowers or expensive gifts. Some mornings, he sat across the street for twenty minutes before returning to the inn.
His restraint did not make me trust him.
It only made his presence easier to ignore.
Noah did not ignore it.
“He’s watching the door again,” he said one morning.
“He’s reading.”
“He’s been on the same page for fifteen minutes.”
“Then he’s a slow reader.”
Noah gave me a suspicious look and carried a box of archived drives into the editing room.
That afternoon, he found an unlabeled backup among the equipment I had moved from Seattle.
“This one has your old studio directory,” he said. “Want me to restore it?”
“I’ll handle it.”
Most of the files were routine sessions. Client names, invoices, test recordings.
Near the bottom was a folder dated October 17, three years earlier.
The day I miscarried.
Inside was one audio file.
I remembered leaving my recorder active beside the hospital bed. I had believed the file lost when an old drive failed.
I should have deleted it.
Instead, I pressed Play.
Hospital sounds filled the editing room.
Then my own voice emerged, thin and broken.
“Your father isn’t heartless. He’s just busy.”
I stopped breathing.
“He doesn’t know how to say things. When he gets here, he’ll be sad. He’ll hold my hand, and he’ll wish he had answered.”
A sob interrupted the recording.
“Don’t be angry with him, sweetheart. He didn’t know about you yet.”
My younger voice broke.
“But I knew. And I loved you.”
I reached for the keyboard.
Before I could stop the file, the door opened.
Adrian stood in the hall.
His face told me he had heard everything.
I closed the recording.
Neither of us spoke.
Finally, he whispered, “I was at Claire’s restaurant.”
“I know.”
“On her birthday.”
“I read the letter.”
His eyes closed.
“I didn’t know you were pregnant.”
“That was why I called.”
“I should have answered.”
“Yes.”
“I should have been there.”
“Yes.”
Every agreement seemed to hurt him more.
Tears filled his eyes.
“I wrote that I wasn’t devastated. I was wrong. I didn’t understand what we had lost because I had never allowed myself to imagine a child with you.”
I looked at the blank audio timeline.
“That explanation belongs to the man you were then.”
“I hate him.”
“I don’t.”
He stared at me.
“I don’t think about him enough to hate him.”
The first tear fell down his face.
“I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
“Can you ever forgive me?”
“I already did.”
“Then why does it feel like there’s nothing left?”
“Because forgiveness is not love.”
He turned away.
Outside the editing-room window, his shadow sank slowly against the hall wall.

I heard him trying not to cry.
For a moment, the sound reached the part of me that had once waited for him.
It hurt.
But pain was not a reason to reopen a door.
Three days later, Margaret Vale entered Echo House.
She wore a cream suit and carried the expression of someone accustomed to being obeyed.
“I came to speak with you.”
“I didn’t invite you.”
“You didn’t invite my son either, yet he has spent weeks sitting outside your business.”
“That is Adrian’s decision.”
“You allow it.”
“I told him to leave.”
“But you haven’t made him.”
I set down my headphones.
“Your son is an adult. I am not responsible for managing him.”
Margaret glanced toward the studio.
“You always did enjoy looking innocent.”
The insult was quiet.
I stood.
“You need to go.”
“He has neglected Vale Meridian, rejected every appropriate relationship, and publicly humiliated his own family.”
“None of that is my concern.”
“You could end this with one clear statement.”
“I have given him one.”
“Then give him another.”
The back door opened.
Adrian entered.
He looked from Margaret to me, and his face hardened.
“What are you doing here?”
“Cleaning up the situation you refuse to handle.”
“There is no situation.”
Margaret gestured toward me.
“You are abandoning your responsibilities for a woman who doesn’t want you.”
Adrian stepped between us.
“Maya has done nothing wrong.”
“She lets you sit outside like a stray animal.”
“She told me to leave. I chose not to.”
“Then choose differently.”
“No.”
Margaret stared at him.
“You would throw away the company for this?”
“If the company requires me to let you harass her, yes.”
Her expression cracked.
“You don’t mean that.”
“I do.”
“Adrian, think carefully.”
“I spent three years making Maya pay for choices other people demanded from me. That ends now.”
Margaret’s face went white.
“I am your mother.”
“And she was my wife. You treated her as a debt we had purchased.”
“I protected this family.”
“You protected control.”
He opened the door.
“Leave Port Alder. If you contact Maya again, my attorney will seek a no-contact order.”
Margaret looked at me with naked fury.
Then she walked out.
Adrian did not follow until I spoke.
“Make sure she gets on the plane.”
He nodded.
At the door, he looked back.
“I’m sorry.”
“Go.”
That night, hundreds of miles away, Claire sat alone in a Seattle hospital.
The Boston trial was no longer available to her. Her latest scans showed progression to her liver and lungs.
She had ignored three messages from her patient advocate.
Instead, she opened a photograph sent by a private investigator.
Adrian stood outside Echo House, watching me through the window.
Beneath the image was an address.
Claire enlarged the photograph until my face filled the screen.
Then she whispered, “If I can’t have my life back, neither can you.”
