"Pregnant woman in dilapidated house" Chapter 10
“No.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“I made the mistake six months ago when I trusted you.”
Damian swallowed.
Victoria moved toward Adrian.
“You cannot destroy your own brother over Elena’s accusations.”
Adrian turned.
“My own brother forged my signature.”
“You don’t know that.”
“He stole from my company.”
“That hasn’t been proven.”
“He tried to erase my daughter from my family.”
Victoria flinched.
“And you helped him.”
“I protected you.”
Adrian stared at her.
“Stop saying that.”
The boardroom doors suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
Vanessa Sinclair stood in the doorway.
She was still wearing the diamond necklace.
But the elegant confidence from the night before was gone.
Her makeup was streaked.
Her hair was loose.
And beneath the beige coat she had thrown over her dress, the carefully rounded pregnancy belly looked slightly crooked.
Damian’s face drained.
“What are you doing here?”
Vanessa looked at him.
“You stopped answering.”
“Get out.”
“No.”
He stepped toward her.
“Vanessa.”
She backed away.
One of the investigators moved between them.
Damian stopped.
Vanessa looked around the room.
Her eyes found Elena.
For a moment, neither woman spoke.
Elena remembered seeing Vanessa in photographs inside her bedroom.
Wearing her robe.
Sitting on her side of the bed.
Smiling with one hand over a pregnancy that now looked suddenly ridiculous.
Vanessa’s mouth trembled.
“I want a lawyer.”
One investigator nodded.
“You’re entitled to one.”
“And I want a deal.”
Damian exploded.
“You shut your mouth.”
Vanessa flinched.
Adrian stepped forward.
“Let her speak.”
Damian pointed at him.
“She’s lying.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“You paid me to lie.”
The room froze.
Victoria closed her eyes.
Elena’s hand tightened against the table.
Damian shook his head.
“She’s unstable.”
Vanessa stared at him.
“That’s your favorite word, isn’t it?”
She pulled off the coat.
Then, with trembling hands, she reached behind her dress.
A strap came loose.
The rounded belly shifted.
A director gasped.
Vanessa pulled the padded prosthetic away from her body.
It landed on the boardroom table.
Silence.
Absolute silence.
“I was never pregnant.”
Elena stared at the fake belly.
Even though she had suspected it for weeks, seeing it physically sitting between the directors made the entire scheme feel more grotesque.
Vanessa started crying.
“The clinic records were fake.”
Damian turned toward the investigators.
“She’s trying to save herself.”
Vanessa ignored him.
“The ultrasound was downloaded online.”
Victoria’s face turned gray.
“The doctor’s name came from an old medical directory.”
Damian stepped forward.
“Stop talking.”
Vanessa shouted back.
“You told me nobody would check!”
His face twisted.
One investigator moved closer.
Vanessa pointed at Damian.
“He paid me.”
“How much?” Elena asked.
Vanessa looked at her.
“Two hundred thousand upfront.”
The room erupted.
“And another five hundred thousand after the board vote.”
Elena’s stomach tightened.
“For pretending to carry a Whitmore heir?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa wiped her face.
“He said Victoria would introduce me to everyone. He said I’d live at the estate, wear expensive clothes, appear at family events, and make people believe Adrian had already chosen someone else.”

Adrian’s expression darkened.
“I never met you.”
Vanessa nodded.
“I know.”
Victoria looked at her.
“You told me Adrian knew.”
Vanessa laughed through tears.
“No.”
She looked at Damian.
“He told you that.”
Damian shook his head.
“This is ridiculous.”
Vanessa continued.
“He said once Elena was gone, the family would keep the story going until the trust challenge was finished.”
Elena’s voice was quiet.
“And after that?”
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“He promised me a future.”
“What kind of future?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“He said after everything settled down, I could become Mrs. Whitmore.”
Adrian stared at Damian.
“My wife?”
Damian said nothing.
Vanessa shook her head quickly.
“No.”
Then she looked at him.
“His.”
The boardroom filled with horrified murmurs.
Damian’s face turned purple.
“You stupid little—”
An officer grabbed his arm.
“Watch yourself.”
Vanessa backed away.
Elena studied her.
There was something else.
Something in the way Vanessa kept looking toward Victoria.
“You’re not finished.”
Vanessa froze.
Damian looked at her.
“Don’t.”
Elena’s eyes narrowed.
“What else?”
Vanessa said nothing.
Victoria suddenly spoke.
“She’s admitted fraud. Anything else she says is worthless.”
Elena turned toward her.
Vanessa started crying harder.
“I’m sorry.”
Elena looked back at her.
“For what?”
Vanessa pressed both hands over her face.
“I didn’t know how far they were going to take it.”
Damian shouted.
“Shut up!”
The officers pulled him backward.
Vanessa lowered her hands.
“It wasn’t his idea at first.”
Nobody moved.
Elena’s heartbeat slowed.
“What wasn’t?”
“Me.”
Vanessa looked at Damian.
“He didn’t find me.”
Damian’s face changed.
Adrian noticed.
“So who did?”
Vanessa’s eyes moved across the room.
Slowly.
Toward Victoria.
Victoria’s face went completely still.
“No.”
Vanessa stared at her.
“Don’t.”
Victoria’s voice became sharp.
“You’re confused.”
“I’m not.”
“I never hired you.”
Vanessa’s lips trembled.
“You met me at the Carlyle.”
Victoria went white.
Damian closed his eyes.
Adrian turned toward his mother.
“What is she talking about?”
Victoria shook her head.
“Nothing.”
Vanessa took a breath.
Then another.
When she finally spoke, her voice was barely above a whisper.
“His mother hired me first.”
Part 10 | Now You Can Leave With Two Suitcases
Victoria Whitmore did not move.
For several seconds, the only sound in the boardroom was Vanessa crying.
Adrian stared at his mother.
“You hired her?”
Victoria’s lips parted.
“No.”
Vanessa wiped her face.
“Yes, you did.”
“You are lying to protect yourself.”
“I met you at the Carlyle.”
Victoria’s expression cracked.
Vanessa continued.
“December seventeenth. Four-thirty in the afternoon. You wore a red coat and sat in the back corner of the lounge.”
Damian shut his eyes.
Adrian noticed.
“You knew about this.”
Damian looked away.
Victoria pointed at Vanessa.
“She is a criminal.”
Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.
“So are you.”
One of the investigators stepped closer.
“Ms. Sinclair, do you have evidence of that meeting?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“Yes.”
Victoria’s face went still.

“What?”
“I kept everything.”
Damian snapped his head toward her.
“You said you deleted it.”
“I lied.”
Vanessa reached slowly into her handbag.
An officer watched her hands.
She removed a second phone.
“I knew people like you would throw me away the second something went wrong.”
Victoria whispered, “You stupid girl.”
Vanessa looked at her.
“You taught me to plan ahead.”
Elena said nothing.
She watched Victoria’s posture change.
The woman who had ruled Whitmore Estate for decades suddenly looked older.
Not weaker.
Exposed.
Vanessa handed the phone to an investigator.
“There are messages, payment instructions, and a recording from the first meeting.”
Victoria gripped the edge of the table.
Adrian’s voice was quiet.
“What did you ask her to do?”
“I did nothing.”
“Mother.”
“I wanted to know whether Elena was loyal to you.”
Elena almost laughed.
Vanessa shook her head.
“That’s not what you said.”
Victoria turned on her.
“Be quiet.”
“You told me Elena didn’t belong in the family.”
“Stop talking.”
“You said Adrian would eventually realize he had made a mistake.”
“Enough.”
Vanessa’s voice grew louder.
“You wanted someone younger, prettier, and easier to control standing beside the family.”
Victoria’s cheeks burned.
“And when Damian found out what I was doing, he changed the plan.”
Adrian looked at his brother.
Damian said nothing.
Vanessa continued.
“He said pretending to be Adrian’s mistress would create too many questions.”
Elena’s eyes narrowed.
“So he made you pregnant.”
Vanessa looked at her.
“Yes.”
Her voice broke.
“He said an heir would be more useful than a scandal.”
Victoria sank into her chair.
Elena looked at her for a long moment.
Three months earlier, this woman had stood in Whitmore Estate and told her that women without powerful families belonged in bad neighborhoods and broken houses.
Now Victoria could barely look at anyone.
Daniel Brooks’s phone vibrated.
He stepped away to answer.
The room remained tense while he listened.
Then his expression changed.
“I understand.”
He ended the call.
Adrian looked at him.
“What?”
Daniel walked toward the table.
“We have an order.”
Victoria looked up.
“What kind of order?”
“A temporary asset preservation order.”
Damian’s face hardened.
Daniel continued.
“Based on the financial records provided overnight, the court has frozen several properties and accounts associated with the disputed transfers.”
Victoria stood.
“Which properties?”
Daniel looked directly at her.
“Whitmore Estate.”
The words landed like an explosion.
Victoria stared at him.
“No.”
“The estate has been temporarily frozen pending investigation.”
“No.”
Daniel placed a document on the table.
“Renovation expenses, maintenance contracts, security upgrades, and several property improvements appear to have been paid, at least in part, through funds now connected to the unauthorized corporate transactions.”
Victoria’s voice rose.
“That is my home!”
Nobody answered.
“That house belonged to my husband.”
Daniel remained calm.
“The property is held through a Whitmore family entity.”
“I have lived there for thirty-seven years.”
“That does not exempt it from a preservation order.”
Victoria turned toward Adrian.
“You will stop this.”
Adrian looked at her.
“No.”
Her face collapsed.
“You would throw your mother out of her own home?”
Elena almost stopped breathing.
